Podcast Retro: Oscar Nomination Morning

I did a bad thing readers. I lost the audio file after meeting with the always opinonated and game Eric Blume and Chris James, who I am lucky to count as friends. We spoke on the evening of the Oscar nominations in late January. I figured better late than never since we had a good time chatting and I realized I sincerely missed podcasting. But I found it this morning buried deep in a unexpected place on my hard drive. How did it get there? Who knows! If you'd like a throwback to a more innocent time before we all knew who would win everything Sunday night listen in on iTunes or Spotify or download the attachment below.

And given my scatterbrained challenges and the odd timing of the post, do tell in the comments:

What are you feeling / thinking NOW that you wouldn't have expected back in late January when these nominations were first announced?

That Poor Things isn't my favorite of the year or the nominees is definitely unexpected.

I am just so bored with the season. I deleted this and a bunch of other podcasts (I love you guys, but sorry not sorry) because I just couldn’t listen to people talk about the same 10 movies for the umpteenth time.

I don’t feel like this other years, and I think it’s Oppenheimer fatigue setting in. The movie is just meh to me. It’s just annoying to see the check-the-box mentality in categories like score (where Robbie Robertson’s KOFM score is so much more memorable, plus it’s a chance to posthumously honor a legend), cinematography (Rodrigo Prieto lensed the two best American films of the year but isn’t even getting much acclaim for it), and sound (I don’t even like Zone but it’s obviously the type of unique achievement that should prevail here).

I will be so glad to move on to 2024.

I agree that this season is boring and I'm over it. All the winners seem preordained in the major categories. The only marginal rooting interest I have is Stone for Best Actress, but since she already has one it's not that big a deal if she loses.

As I'm listening to the podcast, it's interesting the conversation about WHO the movie's about in regards to category fraud. I remember the year Vikander won and people were screaming category fraud, but that movie was only about her for like 10 minutes.
