“OBAA” stays on top but “Sinners” is on the rise

SINNERS is gaining steam and catching up. | © Warner Bros.
It’s been two weeks since our last update on regional critics prizes and other such organizations. Much has happened in the meantime, though One Battle After Another remains the frontrunner with the most wins. And yet, Sinners is starting to show some strength. So far, Coogler’s southern gothic vampire proto-musical mélange is the only film to take Best Picture honors away from PTA’s latest. That’s not to say these are the only choices on voters’ minds. In a season already full of repetition, when notions of “spreading the wealth” are thoroughly repudiated, the runner-up mentions often tell a more interesting story than the winners' list. Just look at the LAFCA…

Special Citation: Judy Kim, Gardena Cinema
I’ve got to be honest with you, dear reader. This is not the most exciting lineup from the same group that gave us the Small Axe quintet as a collective Best Film winner, or such exciting acting winners as Mary Kay Place in Diane and Yoon Jeong-hee for Poetry. Still, it’s a respectable roster, with special love for The Secret Agent, which came close to its first top prize of the season. Better luck next time, I guess. The same goes for Wagner Moura, listed among the runners-up for Best Leading Performance. Still in the spirit of complaining, let me harp on the insanity of taking away gender limitations on the acting categories while preserving two winners per prize and still committing to studio-mandated category fraud. If Stellan Skarsgård is a supporting actor in Sentimental Value, so is Renate Reinsve, and we have a film with no leads.
But not everything is disappointing or unexciting. It’s nice to see Little Amélie pick a Best Animated Film trophy in a season when Netflix seems bound to steamroll its way to an easy Oscar win. I’m also in love with that Albert Serra citation for the Douglas Edwards Prize, a notable quirk of a critics' association actually committed to recognizing experimental cinema.

Congratulations to Tessa Thompson on a well-deserved victory, and for giving us a break from the Buckley vs Byrne showdown that’s been dominating the season so far. I can’t lie, Idris in Supporting Actor over the likes of Delroy Lindo is a bit eyebrow-raising. If he can’t catch a break here, can we really consider the thespian a viable contender in the Oscar race? Right now, it seems that, if Sinners has any hopes of crashing the Best Supporting Actor conversation, it’ll do it through Miles Caton, another category fraud case among so many others.

See what I mean about Sinners picking up some momentum in the Best Film race. Best Director, too, for that matter, after the first week of critics' prizes posited Panahi as PTA’s greatest competition. Anyway, there’s nothing especially interesting here, besides Endless Cookie and Afternoons of Solitude. No outrageous winners either, but that’s the nature of the race when consensus starts to settle in. If only all groups were like the Florida Critics, whose nominations actually got me excited to see their winner picks. Idiosyncrasy and personality aren’t bad things for critics to showcase, and it’d be nice if these prizes could reflect that. Alas, it’s more of the same, more often than not.

Milos Stehlik Breakthrough Filmmaker Award: Eva Victor, SORRY, BABY
The other day, I was chatting with a fellow cinephile friend who also follows the awards season. They spoke about their dislike of Breakthrough and Debut awards because they might prevent the artists recognized there from being taken seriously in the main categories. Looking at lists like these, I can’t help but wonder if Chase Infiniti and Eva Victor are being given a boost or hindered by their many wins in those specialized races. I’m starting to think of Sorry, Baby as a surprise Best Original Screenplay nominee come Oscar morning, but it’s hard to tell when the filmmaker’s achievement is so often relegated to these first film prizes. Anyway, it’s nice to see good art celebrated and, when all is said and done, that’s the point of these things.

Russel Smith Award (for best low-budget or cutting-edge independent film): IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT
Some categories are starting to form a firm consensus pick, at least as far as critics' prizes are concerned. Sinners in Cinematography and Score, The Perfect Neighbor in Documentary, KPop Demon Hunters in Animated Film. Interestingly, there is no consensus for International Film beyond Neon. Whatever happens, it’s likely that the distributor that went on a spending spree at Cannes will get the Oscar and all precursors in that race – whether through Sentimental Value, It Was Just An Accident, The Secret Agent, No Other Choice or Sirāt.

One of these days, I have to check out Good Boy. You can look up to that review, I guess. Though let me give you fair warning – I’m a cat person. There’s not much to report otherwise, apart from maybe The Tenderness Tour in Best Documentary. Well, and that runner-up mention for The Life of Chuck’s script, but I’m trying to pretend that didn’t happen for my peace of mind.

Are we headed toward a Picture-Director split? For the past three months, most pundits have remained firm in the belief that OBAA will take it all, but could they be wrong? Anderson is almost certainly going to win Adapted Screenplay, so it’s not like he’s going to leave the Oscars empty-handed. So, this could be a good opportunity for the Academy to correct a historical oversight and finally honor a Black filmmaker with their Best Director trophy. Oh well, maybe I’m just speculating because there’s so little to hold on to, otherwise. I guess that’s a fun and unexpectedly Netflix-free Animated Film top three.

One critic’s “overlooked” is another’s “justly forgotten.” Also, if you need proof that category fraud hurts actors, look no further than Hamnet. Mescal campaigning as a supporting actor is effectively blocking Jacobi Jupe from staking a claim on the category despite his on-screen father being a co-lead and him a genuine supporting player.

In other news, a round of applause for Josh O’Connor, who finally wins something this season, even if it’s *just* a Body of Work award for his incredible quartet of incredibly distinct performances and films.

Anyway, WTO/99 is an interesting choice for Best Documentary. At least, it’s different from the current frontrunner picks.

SIRĀT uses a macron not a circumflex!!!
Otherwise... snooze!!
Wae Mest -- You're right. Sorry, I'll fix the mistake.
am i the only person who finds all these regional and city-specific "critics group awards" absolutely preposterous? it was more than enough when we had the big four (NY, LA, SFC, and BOR). now it's like Topeka Film Critics Association or whatever the fuck? it's enormously silly.
a reminder that like zero of the people giving these awards are actually Oscar voters. it's all very relative. when we had the big four, it at least felt sort of like a focused cry of "VOTERS: WATCH THIS!" that could have some fun influence perhaps. even then...as often as not. that was the fun. now just having every tiny wedge of the country renaming the same people over and over again...so embarrassing.
and Claudio, there is zero chance that Paul Thomas Anderson is losing the Best Director Oscar to Ryan Coogler. if he does, i will fly you out to California, put you up at the Four Seasons, and get you into Max & Helen's. Nolan had his year, a foregone conclusion for months, and this is PTA's.
@EricB-at least now Cannes, Venice and Berlin are funnier than the Oscars and I’m good with this
Well this is season is becoming bland and obvious.
Actor Tim vs Leo
Actress Rose vs Jessie
S/Actor Benicio vs Stellan
S/Actress Teyana vs Amy.
Nice to see Nina Hoss mentioned.
I've enjoyed Buckley in things but I find her a little overhyped—I definitely don't see the next Blanchett/Swinton/Colman the way others want to.
Maybe we'll look back on her as a Miranda Richardson type who was very in-demand for a brief hot period.
About this time of year, I become disillusioned with the Oscar process (you’d think I would learn). There are usually only one or two candidates in a category that I like (or sometimes even respect).
To distract from the meh quality of the lists, I invent exercises.
1) I get to add one candidate of my own choosing to each category (hard when the category is generally awful), replacing the candidate I hate the most.
BUT
2) My candidate does not get to win. Instead I have to choose the least terrible of the other 4 candidates.
So I get both wish fulfillment and thudding reality.
DK Buckley is a good actress but not starry but simply doesn't have the charisma of other actresses who have you hanging onto their every move and every role seems exciting,
60's had Julie Christie and Catherine Deveuve
The 70's had Karen Black,Faye Dunaway Glenda Jackson Liv Ullman etc
In the 80's it was Weaver,Turner and Winger etc,
The 90's had Nicole,Julianne,Tilda etc.
00's it was the Cate B and Kate W plus Laura Linney
Even the 2010's had Carey Mulligan,Marion Cotillard and Amy Adams
I 'm sure someone will appear to inspire such devotion, for me it's not Margot Robbie,Felicity Jones or Brie Larson etc.
I remember in the great proliferation of critics orgs (it was insane from like 2002 through 2013) i got so much flak for refusing to cover all of them. And even though there are fewer "new" critics awards now, so many have added a nomination announcement round (or more than one!) so it's still pretty insane. Which is to me why I respect critics orgs that focus on something specific to their region or purpose because if you aren't going to bring your own aesthetic taste to something, at lesat find a purpose -- so i love when regional awards have something about films shot in their state or films by homegrown filmmakers or other things where you can shine a light on something that wouldn't get attention otherwise.
McGill -- i feel you. same.
DK -- we shall see in regards to Buckley. But it does feel like Byrne is putting a dent in her NO CONTEST kind of frontrunning... not that Byrne is going to win but at least it feels slightly competitive for nominations in general
Sinners isn't winning Best Picture, guys. Let's be serious.
Seems odd to talk about Buckley as a “no contest” front runner at all when she hasn’t really won anything major; She has a strong chance of winning but so does Byrne at this point, I’d say—she couldn’t be doing any better than she is.
DK - i agree with you there. Buckley hasn't really won much - Rose Byrne has the most wins most likely (not gonna tally everything to prove my point haha) but it seems like she has the most at this point.
Also, in my perusing of all of them, it seems like a Leo vs Michael in Actor - haven't seen Timothee win many either (thank goodness!!!)
I do love Sinners, and hope it blows OBAO out of the water - but i do agree that this year it seems to be a battle between just two movies, or two roles in each acting category - which really makes it boring.
Going off the top of my head, but the one year i keep going back to is when McDormand won her third Oscar (ugh!!) but someone else won the SAG and two others won the Golden Globe. So four out of the five eventual nominees won something major - which made it very interesting even if the Oscar win was very disappointing (should have been Carey Mulligan!!)
Anywho, rant over haha.
Sorry - i went and checked myself and it wasn't four out of the five eventual nominees that won (Rosemund Pike won one of the Golden Globes) so i admit my mistake! Shouldn't go off of the top of my head HAHA
So you had Rosamund Pike and Andra Day winning Globes, Viola Davis winning SAG and McDormand winning Oscar. Made for a actual interesting year. Doesn't happen often!
@TonyL I was bothered more by Frances's 2nd undeserved win over the superior Ronan than the third where I thought all her usual mannerisms, vocal inflections and attitude were dropped in service of a character.
The people who i feel are winning Leo,Buckley,Sarsgaard and Taylor fill me with zero joy as ok as they are.
I was rooting for Nina Hoss but I know now that is not going to happen so it's just Amy for the win at my house now..
I'll admit that Byrne's handicapped by the size and style of her film—
But honestly, I feel like she's already overcome that. She hasn't just broken into the conversation, she's hit every mark she needs to hit and is likely to give a Globe speech.
I don't think there's a lot of urgency around showering Chloe Zhao's work with Oscars in 2025, so soon after Nomadland—and Hamnet is competitive in plenty of categories already, so it's not "here or nowhere" in Best Actress. I don't think it's "now or never" for Jessie Buckley. And for as well reviewed as it is, Hamnet isn't reverberating culturally—it's just a nice prestige hit.
So altogether I think their pros and cons net out; If this becomes a race between two careers/personalities (as it often does) then I think Byrne is a no-brainer for a lot of voters.
Tony - and Carey Mulligan won the Critics Choice that year, too... So it was actually a fun race to follow for once. Every Best Actress nominee won something major except for Vanessa Kirby, who was just happy to be nominated.
I'm glad they went with Frances though... I definitely disagree with her second Oscar, but the Nomadland win simply couldn't be argued. That film floored me.
I can't take seriously anyone voting for Michael B. Jordan.
Having followed a few awards seasons, it’s fascinating how runner-up mentions can signal deeper momentum shifts even when one film keeps winning—those undercurrents often predict late surprises. As someone still learning, it feels a bit like fnf where the obvious beat dominates at first, but the off-rhythm patterns are what keep you watching closely. The LAFCA-style curveballs make the race way more interesting than a clean sweep.

Hey, this is such a helpful roundup for keeping track of the awards season! It's always fascinating to see how the early critics' picks diverge or converge. I'm especially intrigued by the rise of *Sinners* – definitely one to watch. Speaking of strategy and competition, it reminds me a bit of the fun I have strategizing in games like **Pokepath TD**. Totally different, of course, but that thrill of seeing a frontrunner emerge is similar! Thanks for the great insights.
