Sir Roger Moore (1927-2017)

By Deborah Lipp

Sir Roger Moore has passed away at the age of 89. Known first for the television show The Saint, he achieved world renown as James Bond, playing the role officially more than any other actor. (Moore and Sean Connery each made seven Bond films, but one of Connery’s, Never Say Never Again, is not part of the official franchise.)

When Roger Moore arrived in Phuket, Thailand to film The Man With the Golden Gun, it was not a resort. The city was thrilled to have a film crew working there, and pulled out the stops, giving them the best luxury housing that could be found in the area – there was no hotel...

A Minute of Silence in Cannes

Cannes went silent this afternoon (a different time zone) due to the terrorist bombing at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester. Another senseless tragedy.

The official statement:

This is yet another attack on culture, youth and joyfulness, on our freedom, generosity and tolerance, all things that the Festival and those who make it possible –the artists, professionals and spectators– hold dear.
The Festival de Cannes invites all festival-goers to show their solidarity with the victims, their families and the British people by observing a minute's silence this Tuesday 23 May at 3 PM.

Today's 5: Slim Shady and Bruce Almighty (among others)

Have you seen the newest picture of Mera (Amber Heard) from Aquaman? There it is to your left. This is remarkably colorful -- Poison Ivy in Batman & Robin level saturation on the color wheel -- though they'll surely fiddle with the color in post (sigh) since we can't have bright things. (Speaking of DC -- with Wonder Woman getting good advance buzz, should we be hopeful about Aquaman now?)

Anyway, Amber Heard was on the brain as one of today's curated 'anniversaries to use as mood boosters'  today. Ready? Let's go...

May 23rd Anniversaries

2016 Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp one year ago today.

In honor of this event: Take a step toward getting out of that toxic situation / relationship / job / whatever that's no good for you.

25th Anniversary: Alien 3 - the theatrical cut vs. the assembly cut

Tim here. With Alien: Covenant opening to #1 over the weekend, it's fortuitous timing that today marks the 25th anniversary of Alien3.  The 1992 sci-fi thriller is probably best-known today for two reasons: introducing music video director David Fincher to the world of theatrical features, and knocking all the shine off of the Alien franchise for the first time (and alas! not the last).

Underperforming at the box office, and outright flopping with critics, Alien³ has never since recovered its reputation; if time has been kind to it, it's only because at least we can now say, "well, at least it's not as bad as Alien: Resurrection"...
