The Furniture: All That Jazz and the Creative Erotics of Scaffolding

All That Jazz (1979) is the only Palme d’Or winner to have won the Oscar for Best Production Design. I do not have an explanation for that. Luck of the draw, really. But, as we await the prizes at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, this odd piece of trivia is an excellent excuse to take a closer look at Bob Fosse’s masterpiece.

There are actually a few odd things about the film’s Oscar record. It’s not only a rare Oscar-winning remake, but a remake of another production design nominee: Federico Fellini’s 8½. The four designers who took home the prize for All That Jazz include not only production designer Philip Rosenberg and art directors Gary Brink and Edward Stewart but also Tony Walton, who was credited as “fantasy designer.”

Kidman in Cannes. Part 1.

The time we've all been waiting for has come, Nicole Kidman has made her first appearance at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival *insert heavenly choir* the Oscar winner has approximately four projects that will be screened in and out of competition at the festival, which means we might get to see her as many times as we did when she was in the jury four years ago! 2011 The 64th Cannes Film Festival closed with Christopher Honore's sorta musical The Beloved starring Ludivine Sagnier and Catherine Deneuve. Terence Malick's The Tree of Life won the Palme d'Or, Nicolas Winding Refn was Best Director for Drive and Kristen Dunst took Best Actress for Melancholia, and Jean Dujardin won Best Actor for the Artist only to repeat the win at the Oscars several months later.

In The Tree of Life's honor today: perform a very monologue alone in nature about your mother and father. If you don't have nature near you, say it to a plant.

Twin Peaks is here!
Twin Peaks Season 3 begins today so it's probably a good idea to reacquaint yourself with the previous two seasons and Fire Walk With Me. If you don't have time to rewatch them (*raises own hand in solidarity*) there are articles around to jog your memory. Unicorn Booty recaps where several storylines left off at the end of Season 2, and K Austin Allen of The Ringer takes a deep dive into the movie prequel that was honestly kind of reviled back in 1992 but has since grown rather beloved amongst Lynch fans and cinephiles. Perfect anecdotal evidence from my own life: my best friend who was an absolute Twin Peaks nut in the 90s and then hated Fire Walk With Me which we saw together in 1992. I saw him yesterday -- he had just rewatched it was like 'Have you ever watched Fire Walk With Me again? I remember hating it, somehow, but it's incredible!'

Box Office: The face huggers still got it!

It was a battle for box office dominance in outer space as Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 and Aliens Volume 6 (shut up) faced off. The champion was those nasty acid-blooded face huggers rather than the comic bro huggers. Not that Drax and Starlord have anything to worry about having just crossed the $300 million mark domestically.

It's also worth noting that Demian Bichir has both #1 movies -- he has a small role in Alien Covenant and a big one in Lowriders, which logs a second week on top of the limited release chart. Charts and a few more comments are after the jump...
