Nobody goes to the movies on Labor Day, do they?

In retrospect it was probably a bad idea to make a movie called Labor Day (remember that 2013 Kate Winslet misfire?) since Labor Day weekend is one of those rare holidays where people mostly avoid the movies. Essentially it's the last "outdoor" weekend, and it's no longer hot enough to pine away for air conditioned storytelling. At any rate here is the quickie chart for the weekend. Were you an iconoclast who did go to the movies this weekend or were you thwarted by Hollywood's lack of desire to program anything between franchise blockbusters. Seriously this year feels like they're not even trying -- thank god awards season might rescue us...

numbers on that chart are pulled from boxofficemojo

A relatively quiet week at the box office unless you're among the target audiences for the faith-based drama Overcomer or part of the Gerard Butler fan club since Angel Has Fallen opened above expectations (its a sequel to London has Fallen). Outside these charts festival favourite Peanut Butter Falcon (reviewed) expanded into wide release with a solid $3 million and another festival hit Brittany Runs a Marathon had the weekend's best per screen average with $35k from each of its five locations. Sadly the Elizabeth Debicki Virginia Woolf film Vita and Virginia was all but ignored grossing only $4k at one location.

Box Office: "Good Boys" makes good - did you see it?

With 16 features in wide release -- which is a lot given that there's usually only 10-12 with today's tendency to pack movies on 4,000+ screens -- let's cover the whole field, shall we?  Plus the specialty titles in limited release because we think they're just as, if not more, important on the regular. After the jump the full chart...

A scattershot weekend at the box office. What did you see?

Since we haven't done a massive box office chart of everything in wide release (800+ screens) and the corresponding specialty titles in a month or so, let's do that shall we? What did you see on this scattershot weekend that had literally 9 new releases premiering and nothing truly dominant? After the jump the full chart and some context about The Farewell's major financial success (and Oscar dreams)...

Box Office: Hobbs & Shaw

What did you see? We took a beach weekend in Fire Island so the movies weren't viewed though they were still very much on our mind. Particular due to a showtunes night at the Pavilion where ample clips from ChicagoBurlesque, Dreamgirls and more were shown. FYI: Catherine Zeta Jones' Velma Kelly is still magic.
