Curio: All Things Redford

Alexa here. Robert Redford turns 77 this week. Although he's aged (somewhat) naturally, I still can't believe he is older than my father-in-law. The news of him joining the cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier seemed weird at first until I realized he's already played a superhero of sorts; give that Roy Hobbs a cape and he might as well be Superman.  Here are some curios that celebrate the indie godfather/mainstream icon.

The Candidate original Spanish poster, available here.

Curio: The Great Escape at 50

Alexa here. 50 years ago this week The Great Escape, John Sturges' rousing piece of Americana, came into theaters. With it, Steve McQueen transformed into rebel icon, a Tao of freedom for the masses (and especially overweight teachers). Just the other day I found myself whistling Elmer Bernstein's theme as I watched my newborn escape her play yard (although I almost slipped into a rendition of River Kwai whistling instead, blasphemy!). Here are a few artifacts to celebrate the film's golden anniversary

Curio: Making a Scene

Alexa here, returning from a break (moving is hell, folks) to share some film art for your Tuesday. I recently came upon these ink and marker drawings by Jim Ferguson and felt like they reinvigorated my love of classic Spielberg. Jim illustrates scenes from these and other classic and cult films, with a knack for choosing the perfect moments, both iconic and unexpected.

These are some of my favorites from his enormous portfolio (six more scenes after the jump)

Curio: Trevor Gutherie's Charcoal Drawings

Alexa here to bring a bit of contemporary art to your Monday evening. Trevor Gutherie is a Zurich-based artist who is well-known for his large-scale, photorealistic charcoal drawings that appropriate art history, found photographs, and imagery from contemporary culture with an often mordant wit.  “Appropriation for me is a subtle business,” he explains.

"Musterknabe", 2011, charcoal on paper, 110 x 80 cm

Curio: Cyndi's Colors

Alexa here, following up on Glenn's Cyndi Lauper post. I've been a Cyndi follower and sometime apologist (see: my previous support of Vibes) since grade school, so Sunday night was a big night.  Now if only we could conjure the perfect role for her to complete her EGOT; perhaps Jonathan Demme could harness the power of her marvelous quirk?  For now, here are some Cyndi creations to celebrate her Kinky Boots.
