Weekend Box Office: Elvis, Crawdads, Mrs Harris, and more...

by Nathaniel R

Despite a steep drop in sales Thor Love and Thunder held the top spot over the weekend;  A nearly 70% drop from mountains of gold still means you're raking it in! Thor was also the only wide release to hold on to all of its theaters since the studios actually released new movies this weekend (GASP) with Where the Crawdads Sing (which did well), Mrs Harris Goes to Paris, and Paws of Fury all arriving in wide release and aiming for different audiences. With Elvis, Minions, and Top Gun still attracting moviegoers, there was really something for everyone at the multiplexes. We need more lineups like that if moviegoing is ever going to be healthy again, regardless of the wildly varying quality of the 10 films in wide release.

What did you see this weekend?

by Nathaniel R

Continuing the trend for Marvel, Thor Love and Thunder had the best opening weekend for a Thor film ever. Not that that meant that people were enjoying it. Eventually the sloppier ever-increasing franchises from Marvel will catch up to them but for now, people are still showing up like each one is a must-see event, regardless of word of mouth.

Doc Corner: Sundance Winner 'Fire of Love'

By Glenn Dunks

There are three big reasons to see Fire of Love, preferably on the big screen if possible. The third I will get to later, but the first is the story. That of a couple who found themselves through the admittedly rather niche field of volcanology. There’s is one of mutual respect and adoration that I admired also for how much faith they granted the public to understand their world. You certainly don’t see that every day.

The second is the archive footage that makes up the entirety of its runtime. It’s a beauty and a truly wonderous, jaw-dropping visual spectacle.

SXSW: Exploring Volcanoes in ‘Fire of Love’

By Abe Friedtanzer

I’m grateful that SXSW includes a “Festival Favorites” section that includes titles that have played elsewhere and been popular since it’s often not until a festival has ended or all of its screenings have concluded that I hear about something I’m told I have to see. Fortunately, the documentary Fire of Love which was acquired by National Geographic (for quite a sum), meaning that those without access to film festivals will be able to see this inventive and visually striking film soon enough…
