Red Carpet Globes: They Wear the Pants 'Round Here.

Nobody ever leads with the men in terms of awards show fashion rundowns. For good reason sure -- let me guess, a black tux?! I'm totally psychic) But why play to expectations every time? If we don't give them their due right now we'll actually forget and I'm well aware that some readers get annoyed that we only ever drool on the actresses 'round these parts.

So here ya go. Brad Pitt wasn't the only one having tie adjustment problems. Ryan Gosling didn't have Angie beside him so he had to do the dirty work himself.

Meanwhile, Joseph Gordon Levitt wore a red button. I'm pretty sure that if one were to investigate one couldfind out what the red button means . But isn't it more fun to assume he'd just been sold at a gallery prior to the show, being a work of art and all? How much would he go for at Sothebys? (Your best price estimates in the comments, please)

AFTER THE JUMP: March of the Handsome Penguins.

The Superstars...

Mr.Jolie, Jakey, Sherlock and Captain JackBrad Pitt wins major points for being so perfect for Angelina Jolie. You'd think the tabloids would give up about trying to break them up already. I bet we have another Woodward/Newman here or at least a Liz/Dick... I think we've got a for keeps situation. Oh sure, you can say 'Jake Gyllenhaal ain't no superstar, Nathaniel!' but shut up. He is to me. He's the most traditionally garbed of the men. RDJ and Johnny Depp put their own stamp on the traditional formal wear (though this is sedate for Depp). But sometimes people hate that, men having fashion stamps.

Gosling, Garfield, Eisenberg, Renner and Franco Look I, uh, made my own Vanity Fair cover! Superstars Class of 2014: Ryan Gosling, Andrew Garfield, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Renner and James Franco... I suppose it's possible that one or three of them have peaked already (given that many Hollywood star's ascendance is also their peak. Look it up.) But aren't you looking forward to future performances from all five? Their possibly entering their creative peak.

Time for a poll!

Moving on...

Kwanten, Efron, Hammer, Quaid and "Carlos"

Ryan Kwanten gets a spot in the lineup because of True Blood withdrawal; I included Zac Efron because I was horrified that he got to introduce The Kids Are All Right while Michelle Pfeiffer had to settle for Wonderland. To rub salt into this petty wound, Efron has just confirmed that he will be in New Year's Eve which means he will have now made TWO movies with Michelle Pfeiffer; Armie Hammer (The Social Network) is 6'5"  I'm sure I probably shrunk him here like a mad scientist just to fit him in the frame. He will tower over Leonardo DiCaprio when they play lovers in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar (2012). Will they give Leo (who is 6') a box to stand on?; And we end with Dennis Quaid and Edgar Ramirez (Carlos) because the combined handsome is off the charts.

Could it be a "record" button, as in his HitRECord project? I'm surprised Gosling has the edge over everyone else in that winners poll. I feel like Depp will be the first for the "overdue" factor, then Franco (b/c it's gonna happen), then Garfield, who I feel may be here to stay. But then, you never know when they're this young, do ya?

YUM! That was some serious eye candy there, Nathaniel, thanks! ☺

Pitt looked especially slick (his beard was so awful the year Aniston won). Downey Jr. makes me smile. Depp was pretty toned down considering what he usually wears (remember that killer red and black tux he wore when nomed for “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory”). I usually swoon most for red carpet Gyllenhaal, but prefer him clean-shaven so this red carpet session I gotta go with Gosling (who also happened to give the finest male performance of the year, give or take Bale). The only guy missing from your sizzling line up is the gorgeous Thomas Jane but I guess I’m a little biased; I’ve always felt he’s one of the sexiest men alive.

As for the poll question, I’d love to see one of my talented glamour boys (i.e. Gyllenhaal or Gosling—although the latter would surely cringe at that term) holding a little gold man but I think Depp’s mammoth popularity—both public and within the industry along with the fact he already has 3 Oscar noms—2 of which were a bit unconventional by AMPAS standards-all but guarantee he’s merely the right role away from Oscar glory.

ryan -- but doesn't it seem like DEPP has not been choosing well towards grabbing an Oscar lately. i wonder if the moment has passed.

walter -- i suspect garfield is here to stay too. But that's probably because I thought he was nearly as good in Never Let Me Go as he was in Social Network and 2 performances on that level in one year. wow.

Am I the only person who is driven crazy at the sight of some of these men with their hands in their pockets? Especially in tuxedoes! All I can hear is my mother's voice: "GET YOUR HANDS OUT OF YOUR POCKETS!!!!!!!"

Maybe that's just a weird pet peeve of mine.

I voted for Brad Pitt, because I actually think he might win next year for 'The Tree of Life'. Right when I saw the trailer it struck me as an Oscar-winning turn.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChris

I voted for Brad Pitt to be the first of these guys to win an Oscar. I thought he did beautifully with his emotional phone call to his children in Babel. Sure Benjamin Button shouldn’t have netted him a Best Actor nod but I think it was more of a goodwill gesture on the Academy’s part. I like Brad better as an actor than I do Jolie as an actress.

Men's fashion is so boring. I, for one, would love to see Johnny Depp in a bright, ruffled, flowing creation or some such thing. Mix it up a bit, guys!

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMike M.

I'm conflicted about Brad Pitt. He's probably got a few more nominations in him, but he probably won't win for anything other than a "career win" (which, admittedly, is still a win).

As much as I loved Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network, I'm not convinced that he's here to stay. I wouldn't be surprised if he's never nominated again. He has too many detractors who say he's one-note, and I couldn't imagine him ever achieving Leading Man status, which is always key.

Johnny Depp and Ryan Gosling, interestingly, have a similar problem: neither one has been picking the "right" projects. Depp, for one, hasn't played a bona fide human being since what, 2001? And Gosling seems to have a penchant for intimate, character-driven indies-- often great movies, but the kind of movies that Oscar doesn't know exist.

Long story short, I would have to go with James Franco as being the first to get a statue, because:
1) he has built up some spectacular momentum
2) recently he's been picking the "right" projects
3) look at him! he's so pretty!

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBryan

I voted Johnny Depp. Very interesting question to think about (with the choices listed, of course).

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip

I voted Pitt on the account that they always make men wait long and he's waited longer than Gosling.
But i'm 120% certain that at some point in his career, sooner or later, Gosling win take one home too.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmir

A handsome man in a classic perfectly cut tux with a bow tie (make the long tie madness end) is the pinnacle. Dudes that feel the need to add their stupid personal "fashion" stamps make me crazy. Crazy! There is no need! Thousands of years of fashion have been whittled down to this perfect thing, and all you're doing is messing it up!

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJA

I voted for Garfirled. Probably should've voted for Depp. I think as soon as he gets a real oscar contender, the award is as good as his.

Garfield's one for the all-time lists, imo. Can't wait to see where he goes, and if Spider-man screws it up, I will NOT be happy.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterArkaan

The two most handsome men were Ryan Gosling and Edgar Ramirez without a doubt, their both are equally delicious.

Joseph Gordon Levitt wore a red button for his website http://hitrecord.org/reel

The first to win an Oscar will be Johnny Depp :/ but not right now, maybe in ten years, if I got the power, should be Ryan Gosling this year :)

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLuiserghio

The next time Downey, Jr. ihas a critically-acclaimed role in an Oscar contender, he'll win, a la Bale this year or Clooney in *Syriana*. They love a comeback story, they love people they're constantly telling themselves are underrated, and they love someone who's finally earning them some money.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarsha Mason

So.Much.Sexy.

I voted Gosling because, I think, in the next couple of years he's going to give a performance (much like those he's already given) and nobody will be able to ignore him.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn

Robert Pattinson was easily the best dressed guy, in my opinion. His suit was tailored to perfection.

As far as Oscars go, I think if Johnny Depp has a remotely Oscar-baity role in the next couple of years, he will easily win it. He's built up so much respect in the past decade. I'm still hoping out that The Rum Diary will be a success...

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

I voted for Jeremy Renner, I think there is a possibility that if he gets nominated he might have a chance at scoring an upset over Bale and Rush. Since they might be on the fence with Bale being a possible polarizing personality (I could careless since I think Bale totally deserves this award) and that Rush is already a winner and the movie looks like Firth will be its reward.

Renner might still have some of that leftover goodwill from The Hurt Locker and he could very well cause an upset here if he gets nominated in this category.

January 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJamesE1974

Bow ties just don't do it for me. RDJ is proibably my best dressed, though the look probably wouldn't work on anyone else. I do like Edgar Ramirez in that suit though.

A year ago, I would;'ve picked Johnny Depp without question, but now I'm thinking Franco, cos he has the momemtum, and people will know he got close with 127 hours.

January 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBroooooke

I voted for Brad Pitt!

If they campaign him as supporting for Tree of Life, he might actually win!

I know it will sound silly to many, but to me Eisenberg wasn't playing Zuckenberg, he was almost playing himself. Did you see him in interviews? He's either still in character or never got into the character. This Oscar nomination will be a one time wonder for him.

January 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAlex in Movieland

There's been good buzz surrounding Pitt's performance in Tree of Life with some saying it's Awards-level so I would guess if it's good enough, the voters will feel he's due.

I would love to see Depp win one too as he and Pitt are about the same age, but looking at what he has coming up - Rum Diary has some bad buzz and the rest including those just due to start like Dark Shadows and Lone Ranger don't seem to be Awards-type roles.

And I also see Brad and Angie as Paul and Joanne rather than Liz and Dick.

January 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKitC

I bet the red button is Joseph Gordon Levitts totem. Touching it assures him he's Really At The Globes!! By the way, if you go to sothebys.com and search for: cutest thing alive, this is the result: http://www.sothebys.com/app/live/lot/LotDetail.jsp?lot_id=159649370
It's valued at 800,000—1,200,000 GBP (1,300,000-1,900,000 USD), so that would be my estimate for JGL :)

I voted for Ryan Gosling, because out of the nine, he is the one I am sure WILL WIN at some point due to his consistently excellent performances.

January 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMysjkin

6'5"? Armie, call me!

January 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

Myshkjin -- i thank you SO MUCH for playing along (looks up link right now)

January 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNathaniel R

Gosling is probably a good choice because of his role selection, but it hasn't worked for DiCaprio yet (who BTW would easily win that poll). Because of his versatility, I picked RDJ, but if Moneyball or The Tree of Life are excellent, it could be Brad.
