Top of the Oscar Morn' To Ya

7:43 AM Today's the day we find out what those 6,000 showbiz people were thinking as they filled out there ballots. Or even if they were thinking. I suddenly want to chuck out all my predictions and start over again. Oh jitters.

7:47 AM  I'm so nervous. 45 minutes whoooot

MO'NIQUE BABY

Mo'Nique laughs at a flubbed line

7:58 Who is awake? show of hands!

8:18 Okay, now I am showered, coffeed, fully dressed, if not quite mentally prepared for What Lies Ahead. The great unknown. Or maybe the known if they just follow the precursors this year. I'm suddenly feeling Sam Rockwell (?) and wishing i hadn't predicted a Kunis snub.

8:28 I don't think i've ever watched The Early Show but they only had it in them (the anchors) for crossing their fingers for The Social Network and The King's Speech. What imaginative calls! Clearly the female anchor doesn't go to the movies she made a convenient "i'm still watching. i can't say" comment which means I officially shun her. That'll show her.

will Gosling & Williams both make it?

8:33 Ugh. I hate Ben Lyons so much. Switched to E! and he's talking about the Academy "FINALLY getting younger." Maybe he doesn't know that the age statistics remain about the same all the time with the acting nominations. They like the women young, the men middle aged. That's always the way it's been and they way it'll stay. As we've discussed many a time. The only way this year is "younger" is the hosts and IF eisenberg, franco and gosling are all nominated in lead actor. That would definitely be a young Best Actor lineup even with Firth & Bridges involved.

8:34 "some movies you feel" they will not stop with these King's Speech commercials.

Why is that Hailee girl nominated AT ALL? Handling complex dialogue fairly well is not the same as giving a performance that warrants Academy consideration. Sad about Garfield's lack of a nod.

Just noticed the Nolan snub. I'mn spitting tacks. And for the COENS??? really, I could have accepted it for Granik, but i htought True Grit was really weakly directed, and do the Coens really need another nom when its not even their best work. Can't. Beleive. It.

chris nolan snub again.
this must be a record 3rd dga nom after all...

My biggest fear was Kunis being nom'd and Weaver being snubbed. So thrilled that Jackie Weaver is a nominee. So very thrilled.

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBilly Held An Oscar

The Tempest is up for Best Costumes. I'm not surprised. I predicted that nomination when the trailer first popped up and people laughed at me. Now I get to laugh.

Then I get to cry over The Wolfman being nominated for make-up. For goodness sake, the film was delayed over a year because they had to redo all the make-up with CGI enhancements. The studio said the practical work wasn't good enough to release, so they painted over everything. And this is what the Academy wants to nominate?

But then it sinks in that anti-union propaganda Waiting for Superman was not nominated. I think I'll throw a party right now.

Nat

You should take Mr. Karger@ew.com job.

Thank you.

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChand

Yessssssss! EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP for the win!!!!!!!!! I LOVE that Waiting for Superman was nto even Nominated!!!! LOL hahaha

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDavid

I screamed for Jackie Weaver and Javier Bardem and Michelle Williams. But OMG WOW I AM VERY UPSET ANDREW GARFIELD DIDN'T MAKE IT!!!! THIS IS SUCH A TRAVESTY!!! :( Maybe somehow his votes split for TSN got split with Never Let Me Go... Either way, I don't like that he's not there. :( Anywhoo. I suppose The King's Speech is going to win now...given the number of nominations they got and the lack of nod for Garfield :(

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterClarence

Someone please tell me why there are only FOUR SONGS and the missed the opportunity to have CHER perform?

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterfbh

Nolan must have killed every members mother or something. It's outrageous that he hasnt been nominated for he's too best films !!!

Hawkes instead of Garfield.

Thanks god they didnt snub him her screenplay.

Im surprised too see Hereafter for FX. They love Clint.

Potter got too noms. I just felt that was going to happen.

I Am Love for Costumes. No one saw that one coming.

Unstoppable and Salt in the sound categories, pretty obvious. They always do that with sound.

No Burlesque in the song category !!!

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPablo (COL)

As I can't be bothered to count them, does anyone have the tallies yet?!

Another yay for Jacki Weaver:)

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBurning Reels

Supporting Actress, HBC and Steinfeld shouldn't be there, its massively annoying as there are much better supporting performances that were being discussed as possible nominees, good for Weaver for getting the nod though. The Garfield snub is a surprise but John Hawkes is a pleasant surprise. Actress is probably the best category so far. No Gosling in Actor = sad face but well done to Bardem, having Julia Roberts as a friend is always good!

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRami

How is it possible that Inception is not nominated in editing??????????? I just can't believe they passed on one of the best edited movies of the past years!!! Such a travesty....!!!!!

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJavier

Sob sob sob No Lesley Manville. They totally messed up the campaign - she could have won in supporting. Thrilled for Michelle, second nom and could help her win next year (My Week with Marilyn) but how sad that Ryan's not there with her.

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChris D

relieved ruffy got in - that was a potential snub i was sure was going to happen

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterpar3182

Dogtooth! Weaver!

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJames T

Mostly as expected.

YAY
- 127 Hours with 6 noms
- Jacki Weaver and John Hawkes
- "Dragon" for best Score

- dangerous, but Nolan for directing (the movie was good, but had a lot of problems with its structure und rhythm)

COME ON
- Hoped that Julianne Moore would get in
- No Black Swan for Sound, Costumes (!) and Art Direction, and Supporting Actress
- No 127 Hours for Cinematography
- 12 noms for "The King's Speech" (Really????)

WTF
- No Andrew Garfield

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBasti

I'm really, really, REALLY sad that Garfield and Kunis were snubbed. :( I don't mind Hawkes being nominated but I would've preferred Renner to get the boot.

However, I've started a smear campaign against Steinfeld since I saw that atrocious performance.
HEADS WILL ROLL

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJonathon

John Hawkes for best supporting and Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross for Score is win!

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJohannes Brun

The one good thing about Hailee Steinfeld being nominated in supporting catgory, is that there will be a little competion. She's won more critics awards than Leo, so maybe the race won't be so predictable. The only catagories im 100% happy with are Actress and Score though.

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBroooooke

I'm so happy for Michelle Williams!! Although Eyesore in Wonderland got some nods too :).

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered Commentervg21

WTF Academy for snubbing You Haven't Seen the Last of Me?

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDean

I dont think Mila Kunis deserved a nomination, so that doesn't bother me really. Hershey was better and didn't have a chance. But I think Black Swan is a director's movie above all. It belongs to its director more than to its actors.

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

@Broooooke: If that means that Hailee stands a chance of winning, then color me unenthusiastic. Aside from the lush imagery, I found this latest Coen brothers enterprise lackluster, and the fact that Hailee gained so much traction is beyond me. I also find it odd that people kept blaming Kunis for the supposed Weaver snub that was predicted to happen when Hailee and Carter have been taking up undeserved slots for far less interesting work.

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H

The best nominations of the morning (Weaver, Hawkes, Dogtooth - a movie I hate, but love it's nomination - Country Strong, Dragon score, Gift Shop) are helping me cope with the awful misses (Burlesque, Burlesque, Burlesque, no TRON in VFX, That strange editing snub for Inception).

I eagerly anticipate who the trolls are going to blame for Christopher Nolan's non-nomination. There's no late-blooming nazi movie that it's not "cool" to like to blame it on this time. Amazing turn of events, really. The director's branch just DO.NOT.LIKE.HIM. While I think it's offensive and insulting to say "did Inception direct itself?" when there's a field of ten - did "Kids are All Right" direct itself also? oh, wait, that's not a geek movie. I do think it was Aronofsky that hung on by the grip of his teeth since Black Swan underwhelmed elsewhere (no supporting actress, only two technical categories).

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn

I am so, so happy about The Kids Are All Right. I've seen 7 of the 10 Best Pic nominations, and I loved 6, so I'm happy. TKAAR is my favorite, but I'm not delusional, I know it won't win.

Plenty of surprises here, which is FUN.

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDeborah Lipp

Black Swan should've been nominated for Art Direction. And wtf The Social Network for Cinematography? That's undeserving. If they wanted the movie to have another nod they could've given it to Garfield, who actually deserved it.

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLucky

...and neither Bonham Carter nor Steinfeild are Supporting. #$%#!% I loved Bonham Carter. Loved. But that wasn't a supporting role.

Think about it: If Geoffrey Rush is Supporting (also not) and HBC is Supporting, there's only one lead in that film? Same with True Grit -- only one lead? Really?

@#$@#$

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDeborah Lipp

I’m so impressed with AMPAS this year (at least, nomination wise). The only thing I can really complain about is the Ryan Gosling snub but the inclusions of “Dogtooth” (*the* best film of 2010), Jacki Weaver and John Powell’s “Dragon” score more than make up for it.

also, is it just me or does Julia Roberts have major pull in AMPAS's actor's branch?!? remember in '03 when she made a fuss about loving Keisha Castle Hughes prior to nominations. Now this year she seems to have gone to bat for Javier Bardem.

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRyan Steinke

ryan -- it's not just you. she has major pull. Think also Denzel's second Oscar. If she backs something, watch out. I also always pay attention to watch the Nicholsons & Beattys are backing though that's harder to come by since they aren't as noisy as La Julia.

January 25, 2011 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

It took me a minute to realize that Black Swan isn't nominated for Best Original Screenplay. It is the only Best Picture nominee out of the 10 which didn't get a Screenplay nomination! Following the tradition, the movie that wins Best Actress wins nothing else. It'll probably happen again this year.

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGustavo

I love the Best Actress lineup – Annette, Nicole, Michelle – my babies. The only sore spot is Jennifer Lawrence (get off my lawn). Portman will win (Sad face) any of my babies would do – especially La Bening.

Supporting Actress is boring – I’m rooting for an upset that’s not Adams or the little girl – anybody but them!

January 25, 2011 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtfu11

Nicole Kidman - get in!!!!!!!!!!!!!

About bloody time, I am so glad to see her on the list. I am so excited for her. She should produce her films more often :). Well done.
