This & That: Win Wins, Pettyfer Double, Black Swan $100

I apologize for my absence today, I'm so far behind on awardage I know. Argh. While you wait for that, some articles of mine at my other two haunts.

In my weekly Oscar column at Tribeca Film, I'm considering the win-win of being a nominated actor. If you think you're going to win, you're probably racked with nerves. If you know you're not, you're free to enjoy the adulation without much stress. Either way, it's a win-win since you're Oscar nominated, you know?

Over at Towleroad, I'm blabbing about Alex Pettyfer aka I Am Number Four, the latest product Hollywood is trying to sell me.

It's like Hollywood is smiling under flourescent lighting at the grocery store. "Free sample? Free sample?"

Other things to check out:
Inside Movies great piece on Banksy and why the Academy doesn't understand entertainment on Oscar night.
Meryl Streep Forum has some on the set peaks at Meryl Streep in Thatcher.
Awards Daily Ballot Sasha is simulating the Oscar voting. I voted today. Wheeee
My New Plaid Pants Do Dump or Marry with the Lincoln Lawyer lads.
Gold Derby Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark getting rewrites from a different writer after three months in previews? My God. Please just put this thing down.
Alt Film Guide fun list of longest gap between acting Oscar nods.

Finally, congratulations to Darren Aronofsky. He has his first $100 million domestic grosser with Black Swan which just crossed the big mark. It feels great that the public is finally catching up with all of us, right? Aronofsky's been making awesome movies for a whole decade. In case you missed the big Aronofsky Favorite Actors post, check it out.

Meryl Streep with that clothes and that car reminds me of Julianne Moore in The Hours. Where is Meryl going? Is she going to check in a hotel too?

maybe she's going to the grocery store to buy a cake?

is Pettyfer this unknown actor who asked 10 millions $ for a movie last year?

February 17, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterpomme

This Pettyfer is hot alright, but his name is like Pfeiffer except pale in comparison. The person, not the name. Well, obviously the name too.
And let me just put it out there semi-jokingly. Why do certain actors/acresses become that instead of porn stars? I mean, it requires charisma, too, and it's not like they gain more respect by doing crap movies and performing decently or not even that. I'm talking in generalba. Um, general.

I actually did a whole little post about the Black Swan $100 mill thing today on my new blog. Post is here.

I was actually disappointed when I saw the trailer for "The Lincoln Lawyer," because it blew a major hole in my theory that Josh Lucas only gets a role after Matthew McConaughey turns it down first.

At least my theory about Cole Hauser only getting a role after Josh Lucas turns it down is still intact.

Hard to believe that "Black Swan" is the fourth highest grossing Best Picture nominee. Actually, by the time of the awards, "The Social Network" could end up as only the seventh highest grosser of the ten. Why was it the frontrunner again?

Pettyfer is pretty but his personality has yet to show itself. He keeps taking off his shirt so we won't notice.

Did you see him on Ellen?

SanFran--- the Ellen bit is covered in the article linked.

Glenn --- that makes me sad. that last line :(

Liz -- awwww. poor cole hauser.

Voting in the Awards Daisy poll make me realize that I have no idea who to vote for in Supporting Actress. By my indecision, you'd think I just tuned into the Ocar race for the first time this morning. None of them blew me away. Sad.

Which brings me to a question that I don't think we've discussed yet. Once category fraud is on the nominations books, are we supposed to accept that designation and vote accordingly? That is, do we think it's wrong to vote for the fraud beneficiary?

Steinfeld is probably my favorite, to be honest. Is that because I had so much time of her onscreen to get acquainted? Probably. Is it unfair to judge her against the others? Probably. But she's my favorite. So what to do?

February 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

Evan -- that is true that we haven't discussed that. I guess once they've accepted the fraud if i was personally an Oscar voter, i would probs vote for my favorite despite the fraud IF they were miles above their competition. But honestly if it was neck and neck with someone who was actually supporting, I would probably vote that way to continue to be fair about it.

Like in 2005 i probably would have voted for Gyllenhaal, because for me he was way ahead of the pack. It's egregious category fraud but i wasn't particularly fond of that year's vintage of nominated supporting players.

I read somewhere that these pictures of Streep in the car were supposedly of her giving driving lessons to her daughter Carol. There are much more interesting pictures of Streep on that same web site also in a car, but being chased by anti-poll tax protesters.

On TMZ Sally Kirkland said she voted for both Annette and Natalie. Nathaniel does this mean her votes for Best Actress are disqualified? I wish the counters would just say the first one voted on the list gets the vote.
