Links: Tim Hetherington (RIP), Batman Year One, Gaga Saga

Tribeca Film RIP Tim Hetherington. This is so sad.The just Oscar nominated co-director of the fine documentary Restrepo and an amazing war photographer has been killed in Libya. He had just recently released a book of photography called Infidel which had a section called "Sleeping Soldiers" --not your typical war photography.

You can listen to a lengthy talk by him about his work at "Foto 8" The site also has an accompanying gallery to watch while listening.

Movie|Line 3-D reboot of softcore Chinese movie Sex & Zen (I don't know whether or not to admit that I've seen the original. Whoops) breaks records in Hong Kong. American produced 3-D porn is also on the way. Ruh-roh.

Batman Year One, an animated film igoing straight to DVD, casts Eliza Dushku as Catwoman. That works, her being a frisky kitty and all.
TOH Anne Thompson thinks Jennifer Lawrence looks terrible as Mystique in X-Men: First Class. I'd agree. I don't understand why they had to give her that abnormal forehead thing again. Shake up the look a little.

Weird Al explains what happened with Lady Gaga. She's disrupted his album release plans by rejecting his "Born This Way" parody "Perform This Way"

Been missing the awesome of Jonathan Groff or the bliss of Kristin Chenoweth on Glee? They return very very soon.

Vulture Margaret Lyons has a very astute article on what's right and wrong with NBC's "Parenthood". (I met one of its stars and I'll tell you about that tomorrow morning.)

According to youtube

Gaga never heard the song as her manager admitted that he never forwarded the song to her even though he said so. Al says on his blog that she loves the song so it's back on the album and that means the album is done!!

Stupid, stupid manager she has....

I couldn't imagine Gaga honestly turning Weird Al down. She'd be totally into it. I mean have you heard her country remix of Born This Way?

And Jacki Weaver, she wasn't kidding when she said she was courting roles with an American dialect.

What's wrong with Jennifer Lawrence's look is the hair...It's too big. In the previous X-Men films it was slicked back more and worked perfectly. I don't think it's the forehead at all.

Don't really know who Weird Al is, I assume he's already a respected name. But, why should just one song ruin your cd release plans? What about another song? You don't have an extra song just in case one of them is refused by the company? Sorry, I'm not Gaga's biggest fan, but whining about not letting you parody someone else´'s work is lame. It's like if Gaga complained about Madonna not letting her grow creatively because she doesn't let her pay "homages" to her songs.

And Jennifer Lawrence in blue looks a bit like Bill Murray :)

So sad. Tim was a beautiful man and a terrific photographer.

Isn't Parenthood on NBC?

John T --oops. you're right. fixed.

Iggy -- weird al is a pop satirist. He got famous in the 80s doing spoofs of hit songs by MIchael Jackson & Madonna. he needed a "big" cultural event as the lead single as Gaga was the natural.

In her defense, Jennifer Lawrence looks much better in the actual footage from the film. Promo pics for Rebecca Romijn back in the day looked terrible too.

Hooray Jacki! I was so scared that she was going to get totally shafted post-Oscars. I love her so much, I'm so glad that she landed this role (in what will probably be a super mainstream movie, good move to get her more public attention).

Yay Jacki Weaver. Get those post-Oscar roles, indeed.

I have my doubts and mixed feelings about Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique in X-Men. For one, Rebecca Romijn, the makeup team and the sound team were effing awesome in bringing that character to life and provided some of the series' best instant moments. It was a fully realized and unexpectedly successful adaptation of a peripheral character that did everything it was supposed to. For two, aesthetically and from purely a design perfective, this new X-Men looks SO cheap and uninspired. On the other hand, I'll definitely be giving Jennifer Lawrence a shot for her next few films since I liked her well enough in Winter's Bone although I was one of the few but slowly growing chorus of people who thought she maybe wasn't totally Oscar worthy. But she looked hot in that red dress at the Oscar so I'm not mad. And yay for exciting, GOOD new talent in general, you know?

So sad about Tim Hetherington. His wonderful photo work spoke for itself and he could've seemingly had such a bright future in doc films if we wanted. I have yet to see Restrepo (it's slowly moving up on my queue) but I've literally heard nothing but great things coming from the film. And it's always saddening seeing war correspondents of any kind having to suffer for their admittedly dangerous profession. It makes everything seem just a bit more unfair.
