Open Thread (The Non DRIVE Edition)

Gosling is a sex god. Thankfully his status doesn't come from co-starring in those two Marisa Tomei movies.
I'm wondering why Hanna didn't seem to register near the amount enthusiasm as Drive is getting from critics and the blogosphere. They share alot of similarities like the European feel, fairy tale qualities and "cool" factor. Anyway I think Hanna is excellent and can definitely see it getting a following now that it's out on DVD.
Nathaniel I think I remember you being hesitant due to the teen assassin element but that's really not the "point" of the film-nothing like Kick Ass-and I'm hoping everyone checks it out.

i'll say what' son my cinematic mind. CABARET. watched it again just now. The Boyfriend said "this feels so dangerous" and I must agree. It's just so alive and so tragic and so funny and so dirty. gah, i just love love love it. one of the greatest films of all time. i've seen it a lot and it always feels fresh.
Dean, i keep meaning to watch it. thanks for the reminder. but i am SO weirded out that Saoirse Ronan and her managers decided that TWO teen assassin movies consecutively was a good idea.

I've been thinking about watching Hazanavicius' OSS117 movies in anticipation for The Artist. I know they are unrelated, but I'm just curious. I've heard they're really funny.
I've been craving a really good spoof comedy actually. Just for kicks. Maybe I should rewatch the original Casino Royale?

Amir, no one should watch the original Casino Royale. I wonder how one can even think about rewatching it.
I recently revisited Poetry, and I can't help but marvel at Yun Jeong-hie's full-fledged characterization, a tour-de-force performance that, even though quiet, speaks mountains to the audience about her character. I really thought it would be hard for any actress to top Juliette Binoche (Certified Copy) and Mia Wasikowska (Jane Eyre) this year; but Yun joins both of them.
Oh, shit, I watched Poetry, too, recently and I loved it. I just had to re-watch the last five or so minutes more than once. It's just so emotional for me.

Just finished watching 2 of my favorite directors: Wong Kar-Wai and Michael Haneke (except the remake Funny Games, what's the point really)'s feature film collections. I would say that they consistency explore certain themes throughout most of their movies. Their visual styles are equally unique.
After fallen in love with so many psychological thrillers (Black Swan, Mulholland Drive, Oldboy, Paprika, Memento...) + watched The Machinist yesterday, I'm seriously thinking to watch more of this genre.
I watched The Long Goodbye last night. I love The Long Goodbye but had totally forgotten about it for ages! I might have to watch it again today.
Just watched Peter Greenaway's 'The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover' for the first time in too long and remembered what an all-time classic of British cinema it is. It's so theatrical, with extravagant and stage-like sets, and the score is hauntingly unforgettable (from the 'never fails to disappoint' Michael Nyman). And Michael Gambon. Wow. Easily one of the best male performances of all time! He's so menacing, obnoxious and erratic. If only the Academy could loosen up a bit, because the fact that this masterpiece went totally unrewarded is a travesty...
I saw Contagion and really liked the film but loved the Cliff Martinez soundtrack. Haven't yet seen Drive, but I listened to one of the songs and it was very interesting. I'd love for him to get some awards play, but I'm not sure he will...
Right now, I'm trying to figure out which film will be chosen as Canada's candidate for the Foreign-Language Oscar. I'll send you my musings later.
I watched Orgazmo for the first time and kind of fell in love. It's stupid, yes, but it's funny all the way through.
I also revisited the last Saw film because I hate myself sometimes. Did you know that blood is the color of Pepto Bismal when you aren't wearing 3D sunglasses? At least I could laugh at the film with that visual going on.
I'm also on Day 9 of trying to re-watch Antichrist. I struggle revisiting Lars von Trier films because they're so upsetting. I anticipate what's going to set me off and shut the movie off. Hopefully I'll be finished with it by the end of the day.
Last night I had the strangest dream. I was dreaming of a perfect movie made of pieces of others, literally, one dialogue line (shot) from one movie, an entire conversation from another one. It was just perfect and then, George Clooney in Michael Clayton began to talk to me out of it ."This isn't even a movie if it's made of pieces of others bla, bla, bla... and anyway you won't remember it because this is just a dream." So then, I woke up as in any bad dream, which is the reason why I remember it today, I guess.
Dreaming about George Clooney and it is in a bad dream?' What's wrong with me? At least if I dreamt about him, he dreamt of me right? :)
I really want Ryan Gosling to take my virginity. Oh dear God. One of my favorite actors, great guy, and beautifully sexy.
Just watched the BBC miniseries "North and South" and all I can think about is Richard Armitage (soon to be Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit). Great actor, heir to the Sean Bean mantle of Gorgeous Northern English Man Doing Rugged Things, such a generous and gentle soul in interviews. And his voice is like chocolate.
