Afternoon Open Thread
What's the first movie you thought of when you woke up this morning?
Otherwise what's on your (cinematic) mind today? I'm slow to rise this morning but I'm thinking it's a catch up weekend for me -- jamming in as many movies as I can cram in before the HALFWAY MARK BEST OF (yep, it's coming). Moviegoing = Air Conditioning.

Moonrise Kingdom, and how utterly charming and Oscar-worthy it is.
Before Sunrise which is lovely and I started last night. And will finish today.
How totally brilliant Rosemary's Baby AND Mia Farrow are!!!
I would even put that movie above Psycho...
(Moonrise Kingdom=charming, Oscar-worthy? Definitely not..lol)
Wishing either Diane Lane or Sharon Stone would sign on to play Emily's mother on Season 2 of REVENGE this fall!!!
mmmm!!!
I woke up thinking about Pennies from Heaven. Someone started a thread at another site about "Moves Like Jagger" that turned into a discussion about Christopher Walken's musical cache. I woke up and had to watch the "Let's Misbehave" performance on YouTube again.
Must find time to watch 'Take this Waltz'
Shouldn't you finish last year's Film Bitch Awards first? ;)
Prometheus, I've been thinking about all week since I saw it Monday, and saw it again yesterday. Full of plot holes and dumb choices, but I was having so much fun with it I didn't care. Also, worst birth sequence in a movie ever!
Once, because I've been listening to the Broadway cast recording and there are all these posters for Glen Hansard's solo album in the subway. What a beautiful, delicate, heartbreaking film that is.
I watched "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" last night and Maggie Smith's "words fail me" delivery still haunts me.
Bufallo '66. I want more good Christina Ricci performances!
it's Meryl's birthday today... I feel I should do something special to celebrate. How is everybody celebrating?
Metropolitan - saw it for the first time last night and totally loved it.
I saw Fatal Attraction for the first time last night. Glenn Close... wow.
Oh, and I'm seeing Brave, Rock of Ages, and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World this weekend. Pumped for the first, nervous about the one in the middle (but am forcing myself to watch it since it's a musical), and skeptical about the last one
@Murtada - How about watching her sexy son-in-law's new film. ;-)
Anyways, the first movie I thought about today was BRAVE and how sad I was that I might not be able to see it this weekend.
Silkwood. I was thinking about the days of yesteryear when Meryl would give flawless performances in movies that were also her equal. Still happy to have her in any capacity. Happy Birthday, Streep!
Woman's World. Read a little squib about Lauren Bacall, it's my favorite movie of hers and it set me to thinking how I hadn't watched it in a while and gotten lost in the star filled cast: besides Betty Bacall there's Clifton Webb, June Allyson, Fred MacMurray, Cornel Wilde, Van Heflin and the gorgeous and in this case grasping Arlene Dahl as well as the sumptuous sets and clothes. Witty dialogue delivered by experts and suffering in mink! A delightful ode to 50's consumerism.
I thought about Brave and how excited I am to see it tomorrow!
And happy birthday to the best actress that ever lived, Meryl Streep.
Spawn. Seriously. Spawn. I know.
I0ve been thinking about Emily Watson and how great she is to play mentally o physically disable persons. I like her in Hillary and Jacky, but I LOVE her in Breaking the Waves. I still cannot believe she didn't won the oscar nor the prize at Cannes. Bess is my all time favorite woman character. I wish Emily could take more roles like those.
The Phantom of the Opera. I put that as my "standalone masterpiece" in that fun discussion the other day and told myself that i really need to watch it again.
By the way, I am the only one who wishes Emiliy Watson gets the Emmy for Appropriate Adult? You know, if people can't decide between Kidman or Moore, Watson could get it. And line Julianne, she usually doesn't get big awards for her performances... what do you say?
It annoys me Watson is the only Lars Von Trier actress who hasn't won the prize at Cannes, even Dunst who seemed difficult to win won. Come on! When are you going to take Emily seriously?
PS: I believe I am developing an actressexually anomaly for Emily Watson.
SATURDAY!! I am GOING to the movies AND my own mini attempt to ensure that my generation still gets movies that don't BOOM and CRASH. Going to seeThe Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and then Prometheus has my curiosity peeked, will blog on Sunday.
Then its poker nite and I will win by ticking off my friends with my other addiction, my Nicholson Collection playing on two screens. He is amazing to me, and I KNOW that most folks agree, but get so annoyed by my translations of what he was thinking when he does certain things on the screen.... My winnings will pay for MORE MOVIES....
Happy SATURDAY everyone...
Nat! I know you're super busy but how did you not manage to do a "Happy Birthday Meryl" post on the blog yesterday? It should be a national holiday!
Carl, I was thinking about Watson for a quick second when she popped up in Knightley's Tolstoy movie! Rewatched that scene in Hilary and Jackie while she's trapped in her wheelchair listening to her own playing...
First weird thought of the day: I hope Patricia Clarkson is in Avatar 2. I was thinking of this as I was watching Easy A and seeing this awesome lady just ooze sexuality. I thought "she'd make a great scientist that loves Pandora and brings some joie de vivre to the proceedings". Avatar was my least favorite Cameron movie because it just had no sense of humor.
Second, I love seeing movies when I have no idea about its premise and being total surprised. My movie club was invited to a free screening of Safety Not Guaranteed, we had 20 people show, and it was a hoot. I hadn't even seen the trailer. I just love Parks & Rec and figured even if it was terrible, 1) it was free, and 2) Aubrey Plaza is in it. I hope everyone checks it out.
Saw Lay the Favourite yesterday and woke up still frustated and annoyed with it. Must see a decent film to get back on track.
Snow White and the Huntsman because I saw it last night. It still pains me that Kristen Stewart makes so much freakin' money. The movie was a good ride, especially with Charlize in charge, and Chris Hemsworth as great eye candy, but it might have been better w/o KS. I did enjoy Toby Jones and Nick Frost as two of the dwarves.
