Kiki's Melancholia (& Other Saturn Triumphs)

Though I haven't yet seen any photographs of the Saturn Award event, held in Burbank this week and the last of the 2011 Film Awards -- arriving even later than the MTV Awards each year  -- we must rush to congratulate the one and only Kiki for her Best Actress win for Lars von Trier's apocalyptic arthouse amazement Melancholia. You may recall we also honored her right here in our Best Actress listThe Saturn Awards don't have anything like a prestigious reputation (often a problem with awards organizations voted on by fans) but they do have a long history (38 years!) which counts for something and you have to hand it to them this year that they're the only large non-critics awards group to honor Kirsten Dunst for her indelible embodiment of Planet Sized Depression though she did win the top Actress prize at a few film festivals (including the very definition of Prestige Reputation: the Cannes Film Festival) and was also honored by two critics orgs one minor and one major: Kansas Film Critics and the National Society of Film Critics.

A complete list of winners after the jump but if you're too lazy to click, please note that they seemed to love Super 8 best even though it didn't win any of their four Best Picture prizes. Wins and commentary if you...

FILM AWARDS

Best Science Fiction Film: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Best Fantasy Film: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2
Best Horror/Thriller Film: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Best Actress: Kirsten Dunst  (Melancholia)
Best Supporting Actor: Andy Serkis  (Rise of the Planet of the Apes)
Best Supporting Actress: Emily Blunt (The Adjustment Bureau)
Best Performance by a Younger Actor: Joel Courtney  (Super 8)

Nice to see Courtney so honored. It's a real bummer that he didn't factor into the BFCA "Critics Choice" Young actor category this past season -- hey, I voted for him at least -- since he was such a natural in that film and better than half the lucky nominees.

Best Director: J.J. Abrams  (Super 8)
Best Writing: Jeff Nichols  (Take Shelter)
Best Music: Michael Giacchino  (Super 8)
Best Editor: Paul Hirsch  (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol)

TELEVISION AWARDS
Best Network Television Series: Fringe
Best Syndicated/Cable Television Series: Breaking Bad
Best Television Presentation: The Walking Dead
Best Youth-Oriented Television Series:Teen Wolf

I unfortunately no longer qualify as "Youth" but Teen Wolf orients itself to me just fine. Thanks!

Best Actor on Television: Bryan Cranston(Breaking Bad)

Best Actress on Television: Anna Torv (Fringe)
Best Supporting Actor on Television: Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)
Best Supporting Actress on Television: Michelle Forbes  (The Killing)
Best Guest Star on Television: Tom Skerritt (Leverage)

I'm not quite sure how Breaking Bad qualifies for the Saturn Awards (is their some genre overlay I'm not aware of?) though they obviously love it. I also don't know now what "Television Presentation" implies but perhaps they had the need to reward The Walking Dead somewhere. I stopped watching about 5 episodes into Season 2 from sheer boredom / repetitiveness. Repetitiveness is a major problem in the zombie genre, especially since the genre is now super saturated.

Absolutely puzzled that Game of Thrones is not utterly dominating the Saturn Awards since it's such a fan favorite and critical success and indisputable a Saturn Awards type show. Was it not eligible somehow?

This is just about the only place that Anna Torv will ever be even mentioned, despite giving one of the absolutely finest performances on TV.

Hooray for Joel Courtney also, although I would've been just as happy with Elle Fanning.

Good lord that picture from Teen Wolf. Taylor who?

Speaking of late in the year awards, any chance the FBA's will be finished soon? Can't wait to see the Cameo Awards and all the extra category medals!!!

Hooray for Emily Blunt! Justly deserved. She is the Queen of On Screen Chemistry, and she is the number one reason that movie works.

I think the thing is it doesn't quite fit to take any of their categories. It doesn't pose an interesting Scientific Quandary like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, doesn't have as much action as Ghost Protocol and isn't really a "thriller or horror." Let's look at previous ten ceremonies and my guesses for who it wound up between:

2002: Minority Report and Solaris
2003: X2 and Hulk
2004: Eternal Sunshine and The Butterfly Effect
2005: Star Wars Ep 3 and The Island (sorry Serenity fans, but I don't quite see it with the bomb gross and under probed moral centre)
2006: Children of Men and V for Vendetta
2007: Cloverfield and Sunshine
2008: Iron Man and Eagle Eye (2008 was a weak year for Sci-fi Films)
2009: Avatar and Moon
2010: Inception and Never Let Me Go
2011: Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Limitless

Breaking Bad is considered a Thriller by the Saturn Awards.
