"12" It Is For Detroit (Short Term) & the AAFCA (Years a Slave)

The Detroit Film Critics Society should really grant me honorary membership given that I'm a Motown export. Although, had I never left home I probably wouldn't have ended up where I am today as a *cough* wildly successful internationally reknowned superstar film blogger (shut up) so I won't press the issue. I'm feeling Michigan pride at the moment because the DFCS has given Brie Larson not one but two of their acting prizes for her work in Short Term 12.

Detroit's favorites and more awards hoopla after the jump...

DETROIT FILM CRITICS ASSOCIATION

Picture Her
Director Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
Actor Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyer's Club
Actress Brie Larson, Short Term 12
Supporting Actor Jared Leto, Dallas Buyer's Club
Supporting Actress Scarlett Johansson, Her
Ensemble American Hustle
Breakthrough Brie Larson, Short Term 12
Screenplay Spike Jonze, Her
Documentary Stories We Tell

So two each for Her, Short Term 12 and Dallas Buyers Club. I don't want to get into anything racial but given the year that African American cinema had isn't it a bit odd (?)  that Detroit of all places went so lily white? But while we're on the topic

AFRICAN AMERICAN FILM CRITICS ASSOCIATION

Picture 12 Years a Slave
Director Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave
Actress Sandra Bullock, Gravity
Actor Forest Whitaker, the Butler
Supporting Actress Oprah Winfrey, The Butler
Supporting Actor Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
World Cinema Mother of George
Independent Cinema Fruitvale Station
Animated Film Frozen
Documentary American Promise
Breakthrough Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years a Slave
Screenplay John Ridley, 12 Years a Slave
Music, Inspirational: Black Nativity

So Sandy finally wins a Best Actress. Nice to see Mother of George honored in some small way, too. This organization also releases a top ten list so after 12 Years a Slave in descending order that list features: Lee Daniels: The Butler, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, American Hustle, Gravity, Fruitvale Station, Dallas Buyers Club, Saving Mr. Banks, Out of the Furnace and 42

I love how varied some of these critics awards seem to be this year. You do see some patterns but it is refreshing it isn't like in past years when the same people win every award. The race still feels very open in a lot of categories because of this.

Nice. Some fresh picks.

Agreed Blanchett isn't winning everything neither are Oprah or Lupita and the best actor race could go anywhere, only supp actor looks like a done deal for Leto.

That is the most hilarious PhotoShop image.

I think Gandolfini is taking Best Supporting Actor. Don't worry about the fact that he hasn't been nominated yet, might not be, and isn't favored to win.

I think its interesting that Larson isn't getting noms from other groups, but is still at the top of the "spoiler" lists for best actress for Oscar and picking up some critic prizes. Makes you wonder if she if the sixth slot on all these other ballots. AMPAS has nomed people before who had no support from other groups so I think there is still a chance. Depends on how many members actually see the film.

Mark — Fassbender is taking BAFTA.

I am not into or getting why Leto is steamrolling at all.

CMG - Me, either. I wonder if he has a 'surprise' factor, like people never thought he was that great so with low expectations they were really surprised and are now overrating him?
