Lawrence & Hoult Reunited... At the Box Office

Jennifer Lawrence recently split from X-Man boyfriend Nicolas Hoult and now they're reunited ...sort of... at the box office. He's a sort of dead heartthrob with a thing for a charismatic blonde in Warm Bodies while she's a charismatic blonde with a thing for a barely living headcase in Silver Linings Playbook.

Top of the Box Office
01 WARM BODIES $19.5 *NEW*
02 HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS  $9.2 (cum. $34.4)
03 SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK  $8.1 (cum. $80.3)  Beau's Review
04 MAMA  $6.7 (cum $58.2)
05 ZERO DARK THIRTY $5.3 (cum. $77.7)

In other movie/money news: Bullet to the Head, the only wide release going up against the zombie romcom Warm Bodies, came in at #6 which is amusing since that's how you generally kill the walking dead; The Best Picture nominees continue to make a lot of bank in the bottom half of the top dozen box office with those long legs at the box office;  A Royal Affair which is competing with Amour for Best Foreign Film just crossed the $1 million mark in US arthouses, always a significant line for subtitled pictures. Amour has reached $2.5 million, the lowest grossing Best Picture for decades... though it's still in under 100 theaters. (Expansion still in progress. Stay tuned.) Globally speaking it's still slightly behind Caché and The White Ribbon as the most successful Haneke picture.

What did you see this weekend? Or were you all about The Superbowl?

I finally saw Coriolanus & The Paperboy as well as Django - great (Redgrave) weird, (BUT Kidman is a showstopper) and Django, I still need to digest and think on it.

BUT I finally finished my picks for best ensemble http://soverymiddleclass.blogspot.co.nz/2013/02/best-ensemble.html

if anyone was interested haha :D

Nice showing by SLP. I guess one of the advantages of having Argo locked up is that it's blocking the way for SLP, which was a real threat at some point. That would have been, um, depressing.
Jessica Chastain keeps making money - yay! Critically acclaimed AND bankable. Let's hope she keeps walking that fine line.
I saw Movie 43 on Friday. I was just.... shocked. It's unfunny, insulting, and humiliating to any audience that was lured into paying money to see it. I was cinematically raped. This was by far my worst cinematic experience, ever. In fact, no. It's my second worst, because it doesn't even deserve to top any list.

I think Amour is expanding this Friday. I have many friends in CT who are waiting, waiting, waiting.

Other than a reviewing of Argo, the only other entertainment is going on right now in New Orleans..

Jennifer Hudson - A

Alicia Keyes - C

Anyone else? Go Ravens.

I saw "Mama" which was not as effective as the terrifying three minute short which inspired it.

I saw Warm Bodies and liked it. A lot. Quelle surprise.

Amour is significantly expanding Feb 15th and should make 7 million easy

SLP release strategy is looking pretty good, no?

Zach -- well the Weinstein's did manage to make it into a hit after all yes, so i stand corrected. I just think it's such an annoying strategy for mainstream crowd-pleasers.

I'm really surprised at how well "Nell:The Horror Version" is doing at the box office.

Don't remind me that Hoult and Lawrence broke up! :(

I watched that #6 movie, which is quite bad actually, but it was the only new release here in my country last week. I've been watching too many violent movies lately: The Last Stand, Parker, Hansel & Gretel, Bullet to the Head, and none of them is good. It's gonna go another week with the release of Die Hard this week. And I skipped Mama, or else it's another one on that list, I suppose?

Anyone else think SLP is going to win Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor?

I saw "les misérables" today (it premiered this weekend in brazil) and, although the movie is flawed, at the end of the day, it was a great experience. I think the movie really gets better in the second part, with the revolution and the love triangle, and it's thrilling at times.
but I can see that it can test the audience's patience with the endless singing, and it surely tested my patience with people who have their patience tested. a couple sitting right next to me would not stop talking during the first part of the movie, and unfortunately I'm not the sort of person who can tell others to shush at the movie theater, so I had to listen to then talk, and kiss, and it was clear they didn't know what they were in for. at some point I could hear then discussing that the movie hadn't even reached the one hour mark, and after a few minutes, thank god, they decided to leave.
maybe that played a part in me enjoying the second part better (I call the second part the one after the last passage of time). so I wasn't specially impressed with anne hathaway, and end up enjoying jackman, seyfried, barks and redmayne more. and I don't think crowe was that bad.

I don't think SLP would've made $100 mil if they had a faster roll-out, it probably would've burned out some time before Christmas. So, it seems Harvey made the right move, especially since the film did so well, nomination-wise.

Finally caught up with Amour, and I was devastated. It was so good. Riva>Everyone, IMO. If she was American, the race would've been over long ago. I'm surprised that (given Amour's appeal across multiple categories) Jean-Louis Trintignant was overlooked. He was equally impressive, and neither performance would have been as impactful without the other. A lovely duet.

I did also watch the superbowl. go Ravens!

After a day on the slopes, chilled with Easy A. Can I tell you how much I love Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson together? They need to make another comedy together, RIGHT NOW!

Never bought the Hoult-Lawrence romance so I guess the break-up is all for the best.

And Alicia Keys is truly beautiful. Enjoyed the dueling-brothers aspect of this year's SB. Good year for commercials too.

All in all-- a great weekend.

Watched Mama the other day. Began and ended well, a lot of boilerplate horror nonsense in the middle. Chastain was predictably excellent, helped smooth out the bumpier parts of the ride.

Bummer about Stallone - so I guess the message of the last few weeks is that America only enjoys their 'roided out, over the hill action stars when clumped together (a la The Expendables)? More bang for their buck? Who knows...

Not a football fan, but watched and enjoyed the Superbowl. Favorite movie spot was for Fast & Furious 6. I mean, come on, a jet crashes onto a highway and ejaculates a sports car? What's not to like?

I watched "L!fe Happens" on Netflix over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. Loved Kate Bosworth playing a mean girl, and I think I actually like Krysten Ritter (always thought she had an angry face, especially with "Don't Trust the B!tch in Apt 23") now. OH, and Geoff Stults is such a hottie.

If Riva was American we would hear, 'Give her the Oscar on her birthday!!!' soundbites as much as the 'Poor Ben!!!!' soundbites.

Chastain's leading role in The Heiress also has recouped (despite its last performance being cut off due to Jessica having to go to England for the BAFTAs). From my friends in the city who do the stage door trips, she has made so many fans talking, taking pictures with people and signing with people who are braving the cold weather outside the theater. That's the way you earn your keep and good standing. They love her.
