- Gayby, because friends worked on it... ummmm... wow (C-)

Rene -- definitely check out Carax other movies. Holy Motors isn't even the best one!

In reverse order:
The Breakfast Club
Pitch Perfect
Terminator 3 -Having just watched 1 &2.

Obviously I watched The Breakfast Club after Pitch Perfect's suggestive reasoning. I was 17 when I first saw The Breakfast Club and remember it was pretty radical because of the drug taking and sexual references. While it has always bugged me that they felt the need to "pretty" Allison up- I mean Andy had already noticed her- I loved it then and still do.

While nothing much happens the music and the chemistry between the characters is strong enough to hold your attention. The dialogue was risque for the time and the emotions were often raw and always felt real to me. Now, from the perspective of a mother with teenage daughters I understand more than I did when I was a teenager myself about the pressure to belong to a group. I try to teach my girls that you shouldn't be defined by any "clique" and not to let others tell you what you are or who you should be.

Finally a great song creates a great ending. So often the song that plays at the end of a movie doesn't really add anything to the storyline- just to the soundtrack. But here the song actually adds another dimension. It challenges you to imagine what happens in the coming days. To me it's Brian speaking for all; as he spoke for them all in his letter to Vernon; asking:

As you walk on by
Will you call my
When you walk away...Come on call my name...

I like to believe that on Monday, Bender walked down the corridor with his arm around Claire and Andy high-fived Brian while holding hands with Alli who, in my sequel, wiped off the make-up and dressed the way she wanted.

BTW I named my second daughter Claire and in doing so I was influenced by Claire from The Breakfast Club as well as Claire Danes who had just starred in Baz's R&J.

@CMG Oh I completely agree it was the point. It is an absolutely heartbreaking recreation of this guy's trauma and the person he has become in the wake of it. It's just all the more touching that every 2 minutes you don't have a talking head of his mother saying how strange it all is. Everyone takes his recovery and his town so soberly that it is remarkable. The characters you get to know the best are dolls! I honestly think you spend more time with Deja Thoris, the Belgian Witch of Marwencol than any other human beside Mark.

Also, I just finished Y Tu Mama Tambien and WOW is it good. If you haven't seen it, it is streaming on Netflix, but it expires on the 26th! Go! Go! Go!

April 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBrady

Caged (1950) Very good.
Fargo (third time, I think) Not sure how I feel. Didn't like it much this time.
Princess and the Frog (second time) Liked it as much as the first time. Very well made if not really special. The songs could have been much better.

Wise Blood -- too weird by half
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Zero Dark Thirty

...I've been on a TV binge, but I'm trying to remember...have I REALLY not watched any movies between Wise Blood and Beasts of the Southern Wild 2 months earlier?

Might have been a Casino Royale in there.

All at the cinéma (seeing movies on DVD or TV, to me, isn't "watching a movie.")

Party Girl

April 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMeghan

@ Misclanous: What did you think of Spring Breakers? I saw it earlier this month and really liked it. I thought James Franco's performance was great.

April 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMeghan

@Nathaniel -- I really liked it as well, though not as much as the Gus van Sant film. That was my first exposure to Harvey Milk and I found his performance riveting, definitely deserved the Oscar that year (although I was pulling for Mickey Rourke).

April 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMDA

The Accused - 1st time, thought Foster was great

Holy Motors - like someone else here said, there were highs and lows, my attention span waned a few times, I'm not sure I "got it" but there's maybe nothing to "get," but altogether it was interesting and creative and weird and sometimes that's enough to be enjoyable.

Zero Dark Thirty - tense, never stops moving (although sometimes hard to follow all the info thrown at you), Chastain was great (even if the character was vague and somewhat generic) but I'd still give the Oscar to Riva

Peggy Sue, I watched the "Boys in the Band" documentary a few months ago, having seen the original film some time before that. I would love to see that remade and often try to cast it in my head.

April 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

Troy H. -- I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it would be awfully dated, but I really liked it! Who would you cast in Leonard Frey's role?

April 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Buena Vista Social Club; The Red Desert, The Graduate

April 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCristhian

cash, Ben-Hur and The 39 Steps--that's some cool double-feature.

April 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Peggy Sue, I have no idea, but I often think of Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the Kenneth Nelson role.

April 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

I'm glad the library is a good source to borrow DVDs:

Au Hasard Balthazar
-a simple story, but fascinating and profound

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
--the cast is amazing, but I didn't quite enjoy it. I admire its filming style, but I feel like beating the kid too! Also, the "comedy" didn't quite work for me, well, except for Diane Ladd :)

Keep the Lights On
-such intimate, raw, and universal portrayal of a relationship. The actors are excellent.

(Before that, Gomorrah was very close to a masterpiece to me)

April 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLars

brookesboy -- It was a cool double feature. I loved The 39 Steps, but Ben-Hur left me divided. The chariot race was excellent, but so much of the rest dragged. I thought Haya Harareet was so flat she was almost a zombie. (She's undeniably gorgeous, though.)

How was A Letter to Three Wives? I've always wondered about it.

April 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercash

cash, Ben-Hur is my favorite film. It is VERY long but I find it so enthralling. Visually, I think it is the pinnacle of filmmaking. I hope u will give it another chance. I'm glad u loved 39 Steps. Robert Donat is a fave.
ALTTW was witty, bitchy, sentimental and heartfelt. Linda Darnell was a revelation!

I'm watching all the Best Picture nominees sequentially and then a handful of other interesting titles from each respective year. I'm just about to finish 1963, so the last few titles I watched are:

1. Jules et Jim (2nd time)
2. The Great Escape (1st time)
3. The Leopard (1st time)

I love them all but I put The Leopard in first place.
