I want Gwynnie to get a second Oscar nom since Helen Hunt left her alone as the only Best Actress winner of the 90s to have only one nomination now. And I think Gwyneth is a very talented actress.

And I still love Toni Collette's Sixth Sense nod (poor Cameron Diaz, lol ... sixth place in Oscar voting twice). But can we get her in a Liza Minelli biopic? I'd definitely be here for that.

I was surprised that Gwyneth didn't receive a nomination in 2005 for Proof. That should've been her Oscar comeback role. And she was terrific in it. But that was one of the strangest years in recent memory for best actress. Were the voters just on auto pilot that year?

I get the feeling that Gwyneth just isn't really invested in making films anymore. I think she's the kind of actress who will be steadily employed (haters be damned) for a long time, but in supporting roles and for certain passion projects. And blogging on Goop, of course.

cal - agreed. I think Gwynnie is such a good actress. But like certain other actresses (cough *michelle pfeiffer/angelinajolie) she just doesn't seem to care about acting.

aaron -- it didn't help her that the film was a bore. that play is so good but for whatever reason the movie just didn't have its electricity

People always see James Gray as a director of masculine movies, but he managed to get a killer female performance in all of his movies: Vanessa Redgrave, Charlize Theron, Eva Mendes and Gwyneth were all great. Marion Cotillard can't let me down.

I hate that Gwyneth backlash. She deserved her Oscar and she only gets this hit because she won for a comedy performance. People just don't respect comedy, or comedy performances. I think Jennifer Lawrence was terrific and can already see she going the same Gwyneth route, specially because she doesn't think acting is anything special. She's got a lot of prestige projects (but I doubt she will get any nominations for any of them) and in 5 years she'll be over, like Reese Witherspoon. Too bad, because she is an excellent actress.

I just don't think Paltrow has that level of interest/passion for movies anymore. She has admitted so herself, saying that she will keep acting, but it's not her priority anymore (hasn't been for a decade) and she will only pursue supporting-ish roles. It's such a shame, as I think she's a brilliant actress, but to her current lack of current interest we need to add the backlash for being the it girl in the mid-90s and winning an Oscar so early, plus her rather poor career choices post-award and the huge amount of hating she gets for her public persona (not that I mind it, as I think that, although she can come across as a bit obnoxious at times, at least she's not trying to fool anyone and she's fairly conscious of how ridiculous she can be!).

Personally, I'm excited to see what she can do in Carlos Saura's '33 días', the Picasso biopic in which she plays Dora Maar. It will also be her first performance in Spanish, which is exciting! Let's just hope she doesn't pull out of it, like she did with the last risky, auteur-ish project she was attached to (Kidman's 'The Danish girl', which I suppose will just never happen!)

I've always been somewhat apathetic toward Paltrow the actress as opposed to Paltrow the celebrity, whom I rather enjoy. I find it unfortunate that Collette, whom I've adored for ages, has been stuck playing mother to angsty/quirky pre/ teenage boys lately. She most certainly needs to headline a movie musical, posthaste. Had I my way, she would be at least half way to the EGOT by now (sorry, Angelina Jolie).

I think Toni Collette has been pretty busy. She's got a few films in the can (not yet released) in which she had leading roles, starred in a tv show for a couple of years. plus she got married and has two little kids. Plus, I think she still sings with a band. And is very active in PETA and other animal rights groups. This talented woman is going to be around for a long time. Like a few others, she can elevate any material with her presence.

Proof the play was brilliant but the movie was a bit dull, as good as gwuneth was in it. And I LOVED her in Two Lovers- I love that movie, by the way. Phoenix should have been nominated.

Toni is one of my favorite contemporary actresses--in terms of talent, she's at the very top. She should have been nominated for lead for Little Miss Sunshine. She pulled off that trickiest of tasks--being the welcome voice of reason in a quirky ensemble, without ever mussing the overall tone of the piece or reining in the movie's sense of fun and adventure. Even without her formidable acting talents, she would have endeared herself to me eternally for being the one whose touching tribute welcomed Helen Reddy into the Australian Music Hall of Fame.

Toni Collette as Diana is what I have been saying for years. Downey in a musical is also something I have been saying for years and if he needs to be in it for Next to Normal to happen with Collette as lead, so be it. And yes to Anna Kendrick before she ages out (or Brie Larson, though I may be giving the musical US of Tara vibes). Aronofsky directing though? Not sure. I would have thought Todd Field or John Cameron Mitchell.
