Emmy Nominations Repeat Series But Fresh Notes in Acting Categories

Emmy is a beautiful lithe but deadly woman. Look at the lines in her figure! Each year she holds the world of television in her tiny gold hands but unless you're the one holding her you get jabbed by the dagger like wings.  Herewith the lucky official nominees of Emmy 2013 and the less fortunate players who should wear protective gear when approaching her.

DRAMA

OUTSTANDING DRAMA
Breaking Bad
Downton Abbey
Game of Thrones
Homeland
House of Cards
Mad Men

Series & Acting noms / commentary after the jump

Omissions: No broadcast network show managed to oust any cable offerings (sorry Nashville, The Good Wife & Scandal, all of which have their passionate fans) but Netflix did win a nomination for its first ever original series "House of Cards". Now, let's hope they notice "Orange is the New Black" next year. I'd expect a repeat win for Homeland since Emmy doesn't change course easily
Very Happy For: Mad Men. People have turned on it this year which is why we can't have nice things. It's still the most brilliant show on television but people turn on steady brilliance just as easily as they turn on anything when it becomes too familiar.

CASE IN POINT: Mad Men was snubbed for Costume Design again despite being the best costumed show in the history of ever.

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Connie Britton, Nashville
Claire Danes, Homeland
Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey
Vera Farmiga, Bates Motel
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Kerry Washington, Scandal
Robin Wright, House of Cards

Omissions: Not many since they squeezed 7 actresses in here but previous Emmy darling Julianna Marguiles in The Good Wife was probably surprised to be absent. Genre fans will miss the presence of Critics Choice winner Tatiana from Orphan Black. I've only seen one episode but she's the kind of actress that Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse" needed - one with the technical facility to shift body language and vocal patterns on a whim (or plot turn).
Very Happy For: Connie Britton who is a brilliant TV actress and also sings beautifully. Yes, I want her to win if I can't have Moss and clearly no Mad Men actor is ever going to win a statue. (sigh)

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Hugh Bonneville, Downton Abbey
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Jeff Daniels, The Newsroom
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Damien Lewis, Homeland
Kevin Spacey, House of Cards

Omissions: Previous nominees Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk) and Michael C Hall (Dexter) had to leave to make room for the newbies but I'm a bit surprised that Hugh Bonneville managed to stay in the field here since Downton is such an ensemble.
Very Happy For: Jeff Daniels. I don't really like The Newsroom but he's such a great actor and always has been. I've love him since Purple Rose of Cairo for which he so deserved an Oscar nomination 28 years ago.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad
Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey
Emilia Clarke, Game of Thrones
Christine Baranski, The Good Wife
Morena Baccarin, Homeland
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men

Omissions: I don't watch Game of Thrones anymore but I have to admit I never much cared for Clarke's performance when I did and think this spot would have been better suited for Michelle Fairley or Lena Headey
Very Happy For: Hendricks, who should've won long ago and Baccarin who gives me Firefly warm fuzzies

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Bobby Cannavale, Boardwalk Empire
Jonathan Banks, Breaking Bad
Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad
Jim Carter, Downton Abbey
Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
Mandy Patinkin, Homeland

Omissions: No Mad Men supporting actors squeezed though I wasn't expecting them to. Still, it's a real shame that Vincent Kartheiser will close out that series never having been nominated for sneakily great work as the weaselly Pete Campbell. Perhaps his character is too whiny and unsympathetic for Emmy without the cocky villainous bravado that often marks characterizes "love to hate them" roles.
Very Happy For: Mandy Patinkin, HOLLA! Homeland's secret grounding weapon. Or secret to Emmy voters up till now at least.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Margo Martindale, The Americans
Diana Rigg, Game of Thrones
Carrie Preston, The Good Wife
Linda Cardellini, Mad Men
Jane Fonda, The Newsroom
Joan Cusack, Shameless

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Nathan Lane, The Good Wife
Michael J. Fox, The Good Wife
Rupert Friend, Homeland
Robert Morse, Mad Men
Harry Hamlin, Mad Men
Dan Bucatinsky, Scandal

COMEDY

OUTSTANDING COMEDY
30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory
Girls
Louie
Modern Family
Veep

Omission: Emmy is still ignoring the genius of Parks and Recreation. But it's hard to argue with most of these nominees as quality television.
Very Happy For: 30 Rock which has ended but gave so many inspired gags and so much hilarious subversive joy during its run

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Laura Dern, Enlightened
Lena Dunham, Girls
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation

Omissions: A beautiful lineup though there was no room for Sutton Foster from Bunheads or Zooey Deschanel for New Girl
Very Happy For: Laura Dern, The Face

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Jason Bateman, Arrested Development
Louis CK, Louie
Don Cheadle, House of Lies
Matt LeBlanc, Episodes
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

Omissions: Jon Cryer who got a sentimental win last year for --- anyway. BEGONE. Jake Johnson and Garret Dillahunt, who are both really good on "New Girl" and "Raising Hope" respectively are having trouble scaling this height for Emmy recognition.
Very Happy For: Louis CK who I would love to see win.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Mayim Bialik, The Big Bang Theory
Jane Lynch, Glee
Julie Bowen, Modern Family
Merritt Wever, Nurse Jackie
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Anna Chlumski, Veep
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family

Omissions: None that I can think of but 7 nominees gives you lots of wiggle room. I'm surprised to see Jane Lynch back but I guess with diversification (she's in "Annie" on Broadway) there's some fresh energy to her career after Sue was getting stale.
Very Happy For: Krakowski, who richly deserved the statue as a goodbye to one of TV's greatest characters ever, Jenna Maroney. People will be stealing from this performance forever.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Adam Driver, Girls
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family
Ed O’Neill, Modern Family
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Bill Hader, Saturday Night Live
Tony Hale, Veep

Omissions: Eric Stonestreet who has won in the past from Modern Family is suddenly missing, as is last year's welcome nominee from "New Girl". And surely but what did Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) ever do to Emmy voters? He should have already been a multiple winner of this category and yet he was never nominated.
Very Happy For: Adam Driver

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Molly Shannon, Enlightened
Dot-Marie Jones, Glee
Melissa Leo, Louie
Melissa McCarthy, Saturday Night Live
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live
Elaine Stritch, 30 Rock

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Bob Newhart, The Big Bang Theory
Nathan Lane, Modern Family
Bobby Cannavale, Nurse Jackie
Louis C.K., Saturday Night Live
Justin Timberlake, Saturday Night Live
Will Forte, 30 Rock

Happy For: Bobby Cannavale, the former Mr. Sutton Foster, is such a good actor and is a double nominee today for this and Boardwalk Empire

MOVIES / MINIS

OUTSTANDING MOVIE OR MINISERIES
American Horror Story: Asylum
Behind the Candelabra
The Bible
Phil Spector
Political Animals
Top of the Lake

TOP OF THE LAKE for the win please. What an awesome sticky series. It's still so vivid in the memory. Jane Campion is everything.

LEAD ACTRESS IN A TV MINISERIES OR MOVIE
Jessica Lange, American Horror Story: Asylum
Laura Linney, The Big C: Hereafter
Helen Mirren, Phil Spector
Sigourney Weaver, Political Animals
Elisabeth Moss, Top of the Lake

Who can win this? Will it be Moss or Lange? or a surprise?

LEAD ACTOR IN A TV MINISERIES OR MOVIE
Michael Douglas, Behind the Candelabra
Matt Damon, Behind the Candelabra
Toby Jones, The Girl
Benedict Cumberbatch, Parade’s End
Al Pacino, Phil Spector

This seems like a done deal for Michael Douglas, no?

FINAL NOTE: I can't be bothered to talk about Reality Programming because Emmy makes such terrible stuck-in-a-rut choices there. Project Runway has lost so much of its magic and they've still never nominated the best, funniest, weirdest and most subversive competition show on television RuPaul's Drag Race. #sorryboutit

ALSO: No Teen Wolf. ;)

The Dern nomination <3

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTheis

Jena Malone? Lol.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLiz

i love quite a lot of those nominations... but julianna margulies is a surprising omission, isn't she? and more so eric stonestreet for "modern family". didn't he win supporting in the last two years? baccarin should have been nominated for season 1 where her part was far better written. and how did jane lynch get back into the game?

but yeah for kerry washington, connie britton, amy poehler, margo martindale, laura dern, adam driver, molly shannon, bobby cannavale, benedict cumberbatch, "veep" and quite a few others!

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPatrick

Eh - not bad, really. A few bummer omissions - I was really hoping the woman who plays Mellie on Scandal would get a nomination, The lack of recognition for Parks & Recs and New Girl - which were each better than at least half of the nominated shows this past season - continues to frustrate. I was really hoping The Americans might break through, but it looks House of Cards beat it as the new awards bait on the block. House of Cards is a fine show, but The Americans was the best new show of the season. Oh well!

But I'm really happy about the recognition for Emilia Clarke and Jonathan Banks, and I hope that John Hamm finally brings home that richly deserved Emmy.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRoark

Liz -- that's what i get for typing so fast. I didn't mean to give Jena Malone such a huge compliment ;) what has she done for us lately?

July 18, 2013 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I imagine that Emilia Clarke got her nom for the Unsullied episode, one of her rare good moments and possibly the only scene in which she ever reached greatness. Her acting can be incredibly embarrassing and inconsistent, though.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercaroline

It's shame Sienna Miller was snubbed for The Girl -- not the best movie, but she wasn't bad in it. Also, weird that they chose to nominate Jim Carter from Downton in supporting...and I'm also surprised Hugh Bonneville made it in since so many people hated his character this season. Happy for Michelle Dockery though! She carries the show with Maggie Smith.

I'm happy for Emilia Clarke, but I would've chosen Lena Headey, Michelle Fairey or Maisie Williams. Or how about all of them? Ha!

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBia

Also, how f*cked up that Mad Men didn't get one nomination for Directing or Writing! If it was snubbed for costumes, I wouldn't be surprised.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBia

Sofia Vergara WAS nominated; she's listed on the Emmys website (so that makes seven nominees in the Supporting Actress in a Comedy category). However, Eric Stonestreet wasn't nominated while the other three guys were, so I guess that would qualify as the first major miss for Modern Family.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKeelay!

Shocking omissions of Margulies and Stonestreet. And Sofia Vergara was nominated...

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

I'm showing Vergara made it, and that there were seven Supporting Actress nominees from Entertainment Weekly and a few other sites: http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/07/18/emmys-2013-and-the-nominees-are/

Eric Stonestreet, who has two Emmys, definitely missed though, so that's still a Modern Family miss.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

Laura Dern and Molly Shannon's nominations are just EVERYTHING. Fantastic performances! If only Mike White could have been nominated..

Also, really surprised at Holly Hunter and Lily Rabe's snubs in supporting miniseries/tv movie.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenteros

For all their tendency to repeat, they missed out Eric Stonestreet? And they nominate Jesse Tyler Ferguson?

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPJ

I was hoping for Keri Russell/The Americans, Corey Stoll, or more love for Scandal. Also these long shots: Emmy Rossum, Hannibal, more nominations for Enlightened.

Bobby Cannavale is actually Mr. Rose Byrne now! I hope she shows up on the Emmys red carpet with him; she's awesome.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterashley

Corey Stoll, the only heat in that stone cold series.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDan

Oh, c'mon! First: When compared to the achievements of Cera, Arnett or Tambor, Bateman is an odd choice (the way the current season is structured means EVERYONE should be submitting as lead). Second: Episodes!? Again!? Who liked it that much to begin with!? CHARLIE DAY is in PACIFIC RIM! You have an EASY justification to start building up to finally honouring It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia in a major way AND YOU'RE NOT TAKING IT!?

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

5 things:

1.) 100% agree with you on Connie Britton who is fantastic in everything. She moves me to tears all the time on Nashville. Something about her feels so authentic on screen, that you can't help but be moved.

2.) I love the love for Homeland. I don't get all the hate for Season 2! I loved the first season, but the second season was extraordinary. Those 3 episodes in a row (State of Independence, New Car Smell and Q&A) were like a punch to the gut. My tear ducts definitely got a workout. All 4 of the actors nominated had excellent episodes this season.

3.) Jemima Kirke and Hayden Panettiere should've been nominated in their respective categories. KIrke was the best out of everyone in Girls this season, and Panettiere worked her ass off on Nashville, turning Juliette Barnes from a snobby country singing bitch into someone we truly care about.

4.) Where is the love for THE AMERICANS!?!? One of the best new shows on television with two amazing performances from Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell. Martindale deserves her Guest nod for sure!

5.) Laura Dern better win for Enlightened! And she better choose "The Key" as her episode because that scene with Mike White in the car is the stuff Emmy statues are made of.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBhuray

So I haven't seen any of their shows. But the Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie is a bit of an actressexual's dream:

Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story: Asylum)
Ellen Burstyn (Political Animals)
Charlotte Rampling (Restless)
Alfre Woodard (Steel Magnolias)
Imelda Staunton (The Girl)

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWill

Where is Jessica Walter & Kristin Wiig for BRILLIANTLY playing the same HILARIOUS caracter?

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

rob lowe missing for his hilariously creepy work on behind the candelabra is a shame, especially since they weirdly nominated scott bakula who really had nothing to do

but the laura dern/molly shannon nominations make me very happy

underwhelmed but unsurprised by the comedy series nominees - only 30 rock would've made my line up

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterpar3182

I someone is happy Harry's Law was ineligible due to cancellation and they don't have to deal with Kathy Bates still winning nominations from different awards bodies because she's an Oscar winner and clearly the people's favorite.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenter3rtful

Really bummed about the lack of noms for The Americans, which was fantastic. Also, it was never going to happen, but some recognition for Spartacus, which was far, far better than it ever had any right to be, would have been nice. And some love for New Girl, which had a downright stellar second season, would have been nice in these ridiculously large categories (seriously, SEVEN nominees?)

Shocked that the only love for Scandal came in the form of noms for Kerry Washington and... Dan Bucatinsky?????

I agree with you on Emilia Clarke; she had a couple of great episodes this season, but that Emmy should go to Michelle Fairley who just ripped out my heart in the Red Wedding episode, and did amazingly solid character building before that. I am also loving the love for Veep's ensemble, especially Anna Chlumsky. Get that Emmy, My Girl!

Wait... Scott Bakula got nominated for Behind the Candelabra, but Rob Lowe didn't?!?

I cannot even talk about the lack of love for RuPaul's Drag Race. #sorryboutit, indeed!

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdenny

1) House of Cards is a really mediocre show. Shows you the gullibility of Emmy voters for rich production values.

2) Suprised how happy I am Harry Hamlin made it through for his enigmatic new boss on Mad Men. I don't think he had one big scene, but it's a cool part.

3) Clarke as the one lady from Game of Thrones confuses me. Not sure what they saw in her. Wish they had pushed for Michelle Fairley, who's been great throughout and had a killer scene at the Red Wedding.

4) Really hope Jon Hamm, Mandy Patinkin, and Christina Hendrick or Anna Gunn breaks through for the win this time.

5) Do I need to start watching Nashville?

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMarsha Mason

Sorry to see Holly Hunter missing a nod. Her performance in Top of the Lake is a peculiar one, but surely committed and unique. And they nominate people like Imelda Stanton, who I think is a great actress, but I honestly couldn't remember her being in The Girl . Maybe they mistook her performance for Mirren's in Hitchcock ... lol

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCarlos

Some interesting new surprises (House of Cards, etc.) but a looooot of the same old things. And really disappointed in no love whatsoever for New Girl. Deschanel and Johnson were great this season.

As much as I like 30 Rock, I'll be glad when it's gone to be make room for other shows.

Here's hoping a Mad Men actor - seriously, any one of them, even the Guest Star nominees - can finally win one.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

I'm over the moon for Laura Dern, Adam Driver, John Benjamin Hickey and Linda Cardellini.

I really miss Kartheiser and Wolk from Mad Men, also Corey Stoll and Zosia Mamet.

PS Bobby Cannevale I love you, but you were awful in Boardwalk Empire. Please transfer your nomination to your wife.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Biggest Snubs for me :
Rob Lowe (Candelabra)
Will Arnett (AD)
Girls, Mad Men (Writing)
Johnson and Deschanel (New Girl)
Patrick Wilson (Girls)
Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men)

Want to win : Breaking Bad (Game of Thrones would be fine of course too); 30 Rock (Girls would be fine of course too); Behind The Candelabra (Top of The Lake would be fine of course too)

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoseph

=( The lack of Parks and Rec nominations makes me sick =(
That show should be showered with nominations the way Mod Fam is, namely 2 actresses and at least 3 actors
=(

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMerliancole

Laura Dern, Lena Dunham, Edie Falco, Tina Fey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Amy Poehler represent probably the best acting field at any ceremony in recent years. I would be overjoyed to see any of them win.

Unbelievably happy for Mandy Patinkin, who richly deserved a nomination last year as well.

I've literally never spoken to anyone who has EVER watched Bates Motel, so I'm assuming everyone is just on boad with loving Vera Farmiga because she's amazing, which is fine by me. Oh, but now I just realized Monica Potter missed. Yeah, maybe I'm not so blindly okay with it.

The fact that Amy Poehler is consistently nominated means they at least like the show a little, so I don't understand how Parks & Rec keeps getting major snubs, especially for Offerman. Maybe 30 Rock's absence next year will clear the way for it in Series. It sure deserves it.

I wasn't a huge fan of the revamped Arrested Development, but it's a shame Jessica Walter didn't make it in, especially behind Mayim Bialik and Jane Lynch. I swear I'm the only person who can't stand The Big Bang Theory. Anna Chlumsky is one for the good team, though, and so is Tony Hale for that matter.

Do we think they're going to pass the Emmy around to a different Modern Family guy (preferably Jesse Tyler Ferguson, right?) or will Adam Driver get it in a Girls sweep?

A lot of regulars missing this time, which is uncharacteristic for the Emmys. Eric Stonestreet, Julianna Margulies, Jon Cryer (THANK GOD), Archie Panjabi, and John Slattery (surprising since Mad Men didn't seem to wear out its welcome anywhere else).

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAlex

Nothing for Southland... again. No Nick Offerman... again. Screw the Emmys.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

Extremely happy about all the 30 Rock love. From what I can tell, it's the only comedy series that scored in every major category. That should show enough support for a win, no? Regardless of what happens in the end, I think this is the year we see a different winner for Outstanding Comedy Series. As surprising as the Stonestreet omission is (especially since they kept Tyler Ferguson), I think the biggest tell is that Modern Family missed both the writing and directing categories. I think we either see them give 30 Rock a huge send-off or reward The Big Bang Theory for being as massive as it is.

Since Emmy and viewers never got their minds right about Southland (dare I say, the best drama for at least the past 2, maybe even 3 seasons), it all begins and ends with Mad Men on the drama side. So odd that they just seem so over it now. I blame Weiner for this. He's done right by guiding the show creatively, but he seems like he would be a massive pain in the ass to work with. The debacle that was the season 5 delay probably did the show no favors.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVal

As far as I'm concerned. Adam Driver's monologue on his first AA meeting is the best acting I've seen this season. I'm sure Jane Fonda agrees with me. She keeps praising him on Facebook!

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Oh wait, so Sofia Vergara did get in? I thought a while ago you mentioned she was left out? Did they make her a last minute addition as the 7th nominee or did you simply miss her out when they announced it?

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPJ

Positives:
DERN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Molly Shannon!!!!
Adam Driver!!!
Writers of Breaking Bad
The "On All Fours" episodes being recognized as one of the most gobsmacking moments of my TV-viewing experience. Awesome job, Lena. Well-deserved directing nod.
Anna Chlumsky and Tony Hale for VEEP!
"RURAL JUROR"
Connie Britton
Margo
Jane Krakowski
Elaine Stritch and Will Forte's guest-turns on 30 Rock getting love
Cardellini and Hamlin's guest-spots on Mad Men
Jonathan Banks nominated

Negatives:
No costuming nod for Mad Men? Emmys are kidding themselves.
No love for Kevin Rahm or Vincent Kartheiser
Margo being the ONLY nomination for The Americans in a major category
Maggie Smith getting nominated again for one-liners and set-dressing. She will have Emmys that belong to Christina Hendricks and Anna Gunn, respectively.
House of Cards getting that many nominations
No love for New Girl AT ALL
Modern Family still putting the Supporting Actor category in a choke-hold
No Rob Lowe although Scott Bakula was oddly charming in BtC too
Hannibal all but ignored
Despite the fact the Emmys acknowledged a risky episode of Girls, they did not acknowledge risky, challenging episodes of Mad Men in either writing or directing
Todd Haynes and Mike White's work on Enlightened
No Emmy Rossum

HOLD IT! Bobby and Sutton are TOGETHER????????

I just want 30 Rock and Breaking Bad to get their send-offs if the shows I would lean in preference (Mad Men and Girls, although I love me some 30 Rock and BB) seem to be at a disadvantage.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCMG

I don't even want to exist in a world where Corey Stoll doesn't get nominated for House of Cards.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJen

The biggest snub I see (which is less a snub for the actress and more embarrassing for the nominators) is Tatiana Maslany from Orphan Black. Girl's performance is out of this world good and no one else comes close.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHenry O.

:-)

• House of Cards
• Mad Men
• Robin Wright, who had a *much* trickier role than Kevin Spacey and executed it with aplomb (honestly, I wouldn't have thought she had that in her)
• Anna Chlumsky and Tony Hale (for the "glass door" episode alone)
• La Fonda!
• Harry Hamlin (welcome back to the prime and time, H.H, H.H.)
• Elisabeth Moss, who'll win for Top of the Lake (deservedly) in part so Emmy doesn't have to award her for Mad Men (undeservedly so)
• Mlle. Hendricks, who should've won by a country mile *last year* for 'The Other Woman' ep.
• Sarah Paulson, especially fantastic, phenomenal, in her pas de deux with Dylan McDermott in the season (series?) finale

:-(

• Archer, which easily should've knocked out The Big Bang Theory (zzz) long ago
• Corey Stoll (for shame!)
• Carla Gugino, who was a million times better and more impressive than Ellen Bustyn (sorry, El)
• January Jones and Janie Bryant, who make it look so easy (which is all the more impressive)

:-/

• Jeff Daniels - The Newsroom is such a hot mess, and he's so-o-o smug in his • characterization, and yet...I cut myself by continuing to watch it
• Melissa McCarthy - No more Mike & Molly star@#$%ing apparently
• RuPaul's Drag Race - It's Project Runway with balls (literally and figuratively), I tell people, so am of course a HUGE fan -- hello, Drag Race at Sea! -- however, last season just didn't paled vs. seasons 2 and 4 in terms of creativity and watchability (which may have some to do with season 5's contestants, come to that)

P.S. I'm totally swiping the smiley face of Ted and Peggy kissing. ;-)

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

P.P.S. Scott Bakula's nomination for Behind the Candelabra reminds me of Jeanne Tripplehorn's blink-and-you'll-miss-it for Grey Gardens. WTH? And I actually could see Matt Damon scooping the Emmy over Michael Douglas the way Jessica Lange did over Drew Barrymore, despite the latter's much showier role. Just you watch.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

Hooray for Benedict Cumberbatch and the 5 nominations for Parade's End.

A wonderfully nuanced performance from Benedict, he just broke my heart and made me love his character Christopher. I would have like to see Rebecca Hall being nominated as well. She gave a hateful character some heart.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMargaret

CMG -- my bad. they broke up last year and I didn't even hear it. But yeah, they were together in a major way for awhile. she totally teared up talking about him for her second Tony win.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNathanielR

Biggest Omission? Any of the actresses from "Smash". Wow, not one nod. I know the show was here and there, but I mean, really?? FAIL.

Nicest Surprise: Sarah Paulson for "American Horror Story". Though I'm calling category fraud.

Final Thought: What does a drag queen gotta do to get nominated? The SHADE of it all. #rupaulogise

Even Cancer can't get Monica Potter (or anyone else) a nomination for Parenthood. And who exactly IS winning Costumes over "Mad Men"???? Have they SEEN Jon Hamm in a suit?!?!

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterforever1267

Modern Family did make it in for directing and actually missed out on writing last year too. Maybe things aren't destined to change...

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVal

SNUBS:
Monica Potter, Parenthood
Corey Stoll, House of Cards
James Wolk, Happy Endings
ANY cast member, Happy Endings
Retta, Parks and Recreation

LOVELY SURPRISES:
Laura Dern, Enlightened
Kerry Washington, Scandal
2 songs for SMASH

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge P.

I've actually never been a Vera Farmiga fan until Bates Motel - she is AAAAAMAZING in it though. It's over the top but in this spectacular tightrope way where I can't take my eyes off of her. It's funny and scary and awful all at once. The way she pivots from second to second emotionally while keeping Norma recognizable is something to behold.

But really I'm all about the Laura Dern and Molly Shannon nominations. I'd give every statue there is to Enlightened.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJA

I am pretty sure James Wolk was last season of Happy Endings but who knows. ABC treated it like shark chum putting it up against New Girl and then putting it on hiatus only to put a lot of episodes out of order or air it in 2 episode blocks. In my world, Eliza Coupe, Damon Wayans Jr. and Casey Wilson are all nominated.

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCMG

The Laura Dern nom makes me too happy to have any complaints! Well, excluding the Mad Men snub in costume, that is- seriously Emmys!?

But Laura Dern Laura Dern Laura Dern!!!

July 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSVG

I agree that Emilia Clarke has had some very good moments, but this nod should have gone to Michelle Fairley and/or Lena Headey, who has been superbly good from the pilot episode and has had moments of pure brilliancy. She is doing magic as Cersei and has been snubbed quite often, unfortunatly.

But the acting in Game of Thrones is usually amazing so I´m ok with the Khaleesi being nominated, even thjugh I wouldnt have nominated her myself.

The one cast member from GOT I would have nominated this year is Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Jaime´s arch is an actor´s dream and he killed it last season. And Jack Gleeson has consistently been wonderful as Joffrey. Very good father and son duo.

"Emmy is still ignoring the genius of Parks and Recreation. But it's hard to argue with most of these nominees as quality television."

*cough* Big Bang Theory *cough*
