Emmy Night Winners

I've opted not to live blog tonight since I was bombing earlier on twitter. Not my night...

what i'll be doing later when Jon Hamm loses again

But that's okay because it's the Emmys and my attention drifts in and out and I'm way behind on writing projects which I'll sneak in on the side when things get dull in the middle.

Here are the acting and series winners... (refresh for updates)

LEAD ACTRESS, COMEDY Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
Her fourth win so she joins the top ten actresses of all time for Emmy comedy (only 10 women have 4 or more) The speech was priceless with a meta-Veep moment with Tony Hale standing behind her, giving cues.
LEAD ACTOR, COMEDY Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
His third win for this role
SUPPORTING ACTOR, COMEDY Tony Hale, Veep
A minor surprise that also doubles as a tip of the hat to Arrested Development. Buster!
SUPPORTING ACTRESS, COMEDY Merrit Wever, Nurse Jackie
The most adorable acceptance speech. Wever is amazing on that show and a true original but given that Emmy seems to be over Nurse Jackie it was a surprise. Jane Krakowski must have murdered someone in Hollywood to go totally Emmyless for one of TV's all time funniest characters on a multi-Emmyed show (30 Rock) but what can you do?

LEAD ACTRESS, MINISERIES The Lovely Laura Linney, The Big C: Hereafter
So Elisabeth Moss lost which is a mystery as complex as the one she was investigating in Top of the Lake. But clearly the cast of Mad Men will collectively never win any Emmys. Someone has voodoo dolls.
LEAD ACTOR, MINISERIES Michael Douglas, Behind the Candelabra
And yes he asked Matt Damon if he wanted to the top or the bottom of the statue.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS, MINISERIES/MOVIE Ellen Burstyn, Political Animals
SUPPORTING ACTOR, MINISERIES/MOVIE James Cromwell, American Horror Story: Asylum

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, DRAMA Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad
SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA Bobby Cannavale, Boardwalk Empire
LEAD ACTRESS, DRAMA Claire Danes, Homeland
Her second win despite that awkward awkward moment early on when Diahann Carroll demanded a win for Kerry Washington
LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA Jeff Daniels, Newsroom

MINISERIES / MOVIE Behind the Candelabra
Oy. Listen I liked Behind the Candelabra a lot but the fact that it won all these things and Top of the Lake went home empty-handed is kind of embarrassing.
DRAMA SERIES Breaking Bad
Apparently it's only the third series to ever win for the first time on its fifth season
COMEDY SERIES Modern Family
four consecutive wins seems crazy but what can you do. It's Emmys. It's tough for them to break character. The only show with five consecutive wins is Frasier so we'll see if Modern Family can do it next year, too.

Now to attempt to scrub out the horrific memory of Carrie Underwood covering the Beatles.

Peace out.

I am surprised that they were able to resist the Oscar winner Jessica Lange. Maybe they thought Laura Linney was also an Oscar winner.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdela

Well I hope they didn't also think Jeff Daniels was an Oscar winner.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

only the actors?

yay anna gunn!

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermarcelo

Maybe they thought it'd be fun to host a Squid and the Whale reunion?

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJay

Jay -- ooh good point. At least Jeff showed up!

September 22, 2013 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

yet another winless year for the mad men actors; you're just embarrassing yourselves now, emmy voters

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterpar3182

Of course, Ellen Burstyn. At least she was onscreen for more than 30 seconds.
Sarah Paulson should have been in the lead category.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdela

Par3182, I agree. Mad Men not winning the costume category is right up there. Has there been another show in the recent times in which costuming plays such an integral role in the formulation of the characters?

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdela

The idea that short-form broadcast series like The Big C, Political Animals and American Horror Story in general get to compete against actual miniseries like Top of the Lake, etc. is irksome, to say the least. I wish they'd tighten up the rules in that category. Political Animals was meant to be a 7-episode dry run for a possible longer series; it was just embarrassing to watch. Showtime finally put The Big C out of its misery by bringing it back for a few episodes to wrap it up, but that shouldn't constitute a miniseries.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Jim Parson? Big Bang? comedy or dragedy?

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersteans

Suzanne -- that problem persists in tha tawful "guest actor" category. it's just so full of series regulars who just haven't ironed out their contracts or admitted that they're series regulars (i love joan cusack on shameless but that is all kinds of fuckery that she gets to keep competing there. it's just not fair to the real guest actors)

September 22, 2013 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I know Christina Hendricks has had stronger seasons but seriously what the fuck? And I really didn't think Elisabeth Moss would go home empty handed. Laura Dern's loss was another serious upset. Merrit Wever's win was the highlight of the night for me.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

yes, "breaking bad" won!

but four wins for "modern family"? may they follow the path of "mad men" and finally lose on their fifth year... I don't know how the show is currently, but maybe it has the same 'problem' as "mad men" (good as ever, but the same thing over and over again is getting old).

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermarcelo

I agree Nathan! Underwood must've sung country for too long. The performance was robotic and unpleasant to the ears. What was wrong with her high notes? I remember Underwood was actually good on American Idol.

Was rooting for Krakowski, but Weaver is the best thing on Nurse Jackie! Gunn was also the most deserving winner of the night!

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLars

Laura Linney won because Melissa McCarthy stole her Emmy from all that "Bridesmaids" momentum, right?

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAlex

so I guess I have to live in a world where Amy Poehler is "emmyless".. I guess life is a sad, sad place to live on...

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersteans

steans- Right? If the two-part wedding episode as her submission couldn't do it, I fear Leslie Knope is going to ride off into the sunset Emmy-less.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJake D

I knew it was probably not going to happen, but I was really rooting for "30 rock" to win comedy series. or Jane Krakowski to get her rightful Emmy. At least they honored Tina Fey again. I guess I'm happy? I guess....

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterZacary

I was being foolish and predicted that they will finally give emmys where they are due. No Amy Poehler (so sad! - her character is so much better than that of Dreyfus), No Jane Krakowski, Christina Hendricks and Sarah Paulson.
Linney's win was a nice surprise as she totally deserved the Emmy for the incredible first season of The Big C, although this year Jessica Lange stole my heart.
And what the... with the win of Jeff Daniels. He was actually the weakest of the bunch.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel B.

Tony Hale and Merrit Wever, yay!

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterIvonne

I couldn't be more disappointed.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

I adore Moss and everything she's done on Mad Men. I even get the sense that fabulous though she is as a character, Peggy has barely tapped her range. (And people are crazy - that show most definitely isn't declining)

But whatever she was doing in Top of the Lake most certainly wasn't a New Zealand accent - put for that matter an Australian one. It wasn't even in the southern hemisphere. I was practically offended when I read an interview where she was boasting about mastering the accent and getting a positive response locally. No one on this side of the world could help but laugh at the way she was speaking

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered Commentergoran

Really happy for Tony Hale! Happy enough to maintain inner peace over the tragedy that is J.Kraw's emmylessness.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMike in Canada

Lots of bad wins last night. How is it that dark horses as strange as Jeff Daniels, Ellen Burstyn, and Merrit Weaver can win but Laura Dern can't?

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W

Somehow forgot Laura Linney from that list.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W

Also, every time they showed Julianna Marguiles I felt secondhand embarrassment that she showed up.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W

@Hayden W--She was there to shame the Emmys for her unforgivable snub. Much as I love all of the women and all of the performances in that category (I do watch all of those shows), there's no doubt in my mind that Julianna Marguiles is doing the best work of any lead actress on TV right now. Part of it is that show gives her so much to work with, and so coherently. But she's just killing it week after week, year after year. But hey she has her hot little husband to go home to, so I guess she's got the best prize of all.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTB

@TB, so glad you've mentioned Julianna's husband, because, for me, on a night almost everyone I was rooting for lost or didn't even get nominated in the first place, the lack of just a tiny bit of screen time for that gorgeous man that is Julianna's husband was definitely the biggest sin of them all! Damn you, Emmys.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterClara

TB -- oh come on. Juliana has been AMPLY rewarded by Emmy over the years. I really dont understand fan desires to see the same people crowned every year. For example. Everyone knows that I am a die hard Mad Men fanatic. But i would not like it if those actors won EVERY year. all I was asking for was at least once for the some of the most complex and nuanced performances on television.

i just think it's insane that so many people have multiple emmys for the same role but jane krakowski jon hamm and several others cant' even win one prize for crafting these legendary characters. BLARGH.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNathanielR

After the singled-out Corey Montheith (dont know how to spell his name, dont care to google it) in memorian tribute, I wonder if Chace Crawford and Ian Sohmerdale will get theirs too once they pass away.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Jessica Lange losing is just stupid. Her brilliance in that role is universally recognized. And Laura Linney was in the wrong category.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Amanda, speaking of Ian, just rewatched Changing Hearts. Lauren Holly and Faye Dunaway rip my heart to shreds in this shameless tearjerker. Ah, sweet nirvana. But I was often needlessly distracted by those two caterpillars crawling down the sides of Ian's face. They could have been sideburns.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

I just think there's something comical about a woman who's usually told she's among the top three or four dramatic actresses on TV showing up to an event that bills her, at BEST, eighth place in the game. It's not even like they only had five nominees. They broadened the category to include EVERYONE but her.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W

I dunno, I thought the show was kind of a bust. NPH seemed infinitely more at home at the Tonys, clearly. The winners mostly sucked (MF again? Really?!) and all the repeats especially left a bad taste in my mouth. I just don't get this award show but since we're in a post-Steve Carell Emmyless world, they don't give a damn about finally giving it to someone after SO many deserving nominations so I think our beloved Hamm, Poehler and Co. are just gonna keep getting shafted until they are no longer eligible. I did think the Behind The Candelabra (sweet, sweet justice but Top of the Lake should've taken a couple), Breaking Bad and Colbert Report wins were rather excellent but that's sorta the end of it.

Also, can we not with those WTF wins? Bobby Cannavale? Ellen Burstyn? James Cromwell? Wever over Krakowski? Laura Linney? Jeff Daniels?! W. T. F. Do they even watch the submissions? No? Okay, because there are at least two or three nominees in each of those categories that are roundly better than those winners.

Ugh, Emmys. Anyways. >_>

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

Nat, Top of the Lake did win Cinematography but that's a pretty small token for a really good miniseries. I don't think Moss was higher than 3rd though, Lange was the clear favorite to win. How Linney bested them both is a bizarre and awful mystery.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterErik Anderson

@Nathaniel R--Oh don't worry, I wouldn't have voted for Julianna. My vote would have probably gone to Kerry Washington or Robin Wright, both of whom give the exact performances that their shows need, even if neither Scandal nor House Of Cards is to my taste. But Julianna's still the best performance by a lead actress on TV. I'd have gladly given up Michelle Dockery or Connie Britton (who in a perfect world would also be a multiple Emmy winner) for a sideline nomination.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTB

I'm mostly disappointed that Sarah Paulson lost. Categor fraud, sure, but she can't help that she was competing against Jessica Lange's celebrity. I guess I shouldn't be surprised since they didn't even nominate Lily Rabe.

September 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

John- Nope, even as somebody still steaming that Hendricks lost for "The Other Woman" to DMS, I found her not really to central to S6. Like I would've nominated Shipka or January Jones for their work. Plus Anna Gunn's submission of "Fifty-One" was easily the best submission episode of the category and she has been nearly as deserving for her portrayal of Skyler since S3.
