The Not Grammys Experience
This isn't The Music Experience but we should glance toward the Grammy nominees. Among the "record" and "song" of the year categories, which are kind of like the actress and actor to "album of the year"'s best picture --it's a tortured analogy, just go with it -- my votes would go to... no, I can't do it. No preferences. I like most of them but, frankly, they all remind me of other better songs especially "Chandelier" which is like "Umbrella: The Sequel" and "Fancy" which is like a weaker and more annoying Stefani track. Plus I thought "All About the Bass" was a two-for-one Novelty Song download deal with Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" -- I had no idea it was respectable music! What would the Best Picture equivalent be at the Oscars? I can't even imagine...
But, again, not a music guy. Outside of movie music as an extension of a my cinephilia and musical theater as an extension of my inner soul (Proud Show Queen and I don't care who knows it... Haters gonna hate hate hate. Shake it off!) I don't think about music that much except to think "What should i put on my gym playlist to help motivate the exercize that I'm not going to do no matter how great the playlist is?!?"
Actors or Directors among the Grammy-nominated this year
- James Franco (Spoken Word nominee for "Actors Anonymous")
I think it's worth noting that Franco has yet to win a major prize beyond a Golden Globe but he has now been nominated for the Oscar, the Emmy, and the Grammy Clearly has his sights set on a Tony at some point, too. - Cheyenne Jackson (Principal Soloist for San Francisco Symphony's version of "West Side Story" nominated for Musical Theater Album)_
- Neil Patrick Harris (Principal Soloist for "Hedwig" revival nominated for Musical Theater Album)
- John Waters (Spoken Word nominee for "Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America")
MOVIE RELATED CATEGORIES which are always a curious mix of Oscar years given differing eligiblity periods are after the jump...
Compilation Soundtrack
- American Hustle
- Frozen
- Get On Up: The James Brown Story
- Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1
- The Wolf of Wall Street
The Wolf of Wall Street really? With hundreds of tv/movie records to choose from?
Score/Soundtrack
- Frozen, Christoph Beck
- Gone Girl, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross
- The Grand Budapest Hotel, Alexandre Desplat
- Gravity, Steven Price (Oscar winner 2013)
- Saving Mr Banks, Thomas Newman (Oscar nominee 2013)
Should be curious to see who wins this one right? Frozen is beloved for its songs not its score... and Gone Girl and Grand Budapest dont seem like the behemoths that Gravity was in this regard? But Gravity is now really old in terms of awardage.
Song for Visual Media
- Everything is Awesome, The LEGO Movie
- I See Fire, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
- I'm Not Gonna Miss You, Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me
(Are we underestimating this final song from the music legend - recorded for the documentary about him -- in the Oscar race for song this year? With Oscar you never know about eligibility until that long list is revealed but we shall see.) - Let It Go, Frozen (Oscar winner 2013)
- The Moon Song, Her (Oscar nominee 2013)
Can "Let it Go" continue its cultural dominance a year past its oppressive ubiquity? Or will "Everything is Awesome"or "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" surprise?
Music Film
- Beyoncé & Jay Z: On the Run Tour
- Ghost Stories (Coldplay)
- 20 Feet From Stardom (Oscar winner 2013, Best Documentary)
- Metallica Through The Never
- The Truth About Love: Live From Melbourne (P!nk)
I love P!nk. I think I've made this clear. I expect that 20 Feet will repeat its Oscar win unless the Grammys need to hand Beyoncé an 18th Grammy.
Exit Music
Since it's Post-Thanksgiving we're allowed to listen to Christmas music now. So here you go with multiple-nominee Sam Smith doing a little Judy G since out gay performers are required to.

I'm not a music guy either. But these Grammy choices for BR and BS of the year really suck collectively! Apart from the much underappreciated "Stay with Me" (still a soulful spin-off of Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down", but a real GOOD tearjerker anyway, the rest is just...WTF? But since Grammys are getting (again!) embarrasing in awarding chart-fodder, I'm not surprised. Still, I would like to know why in hell they diregarded a way better novelty song than "All about that Bass", talking about Pharrell's "Happy" for BR, and which became even a bigger hit! And no love for the Lorde-inspired "Habits (Stay High)"? Puzzling! I didn't expect for a minute they know about The War on Drugs, Vic Mensa or Caribou, just to name a few who did know how to make a great record, but we need a Spirit Award Grammy cousing ASAP to balnce things somehow, me thinks.
franco tried for a tony this year, but his costar chris o'dowd stole the show (and nomination) from him
If they watch the Glen Campbell movie (which they might but probably won't), he will smack down "Let It Go."
I'm so glad they snubbed Let It Go in the main categories. I believe crime increased during its heyday.
I don't get why you compare Chandelier to Umbrella. They're both great songs and they have nothing in common.
The Grammys are the most irrelevant award that anyone can have. It doesn't mean anything at all since it celebrates a dying industry for itself and screw people along the way.
Peggy Sue -- just because they sound really similar to me that's all. no other reason.
I follow music almost as heavily as I follow film (probably about the same) and the Grammy noms this year were horrid. Legitimately. But they often are, so I'm not sure why I was surprised. All they choose is the #1 pop hits.
Also, on your "unless they need to hand Beyonce an 18th Grammy" ... uh, duh. Lol. She's not only going to get an 18th, but her count will probably be in the twenties. She better win album of the year.
YAAAASSSS! Phillip H. : Beyonce is the Meryl Streep of the Grammys. I hope that erotic, moody, futuristic soul of an album wins the Album of the Year!
"Chandelier" is "Umbrella: the Sequel"? Gurl bye with that noise. Sia is a genius.
