Beauty Break: Happy International Women's Day!
But, let's be honest: that's kinda every day here at the Film Experience. Therefore I have nothing special planned for it. Sorry bout it. I'd list my single favorite actress from every country but who got time for that? Instead a shout out to international readers and please enjoy these pictures of Anouk Aimée, Nicole Kidman, Maggie Cheung & Zhang Ziyi, Monica Vitti, Melanie Lynskey & Kate Winslet and more after the jump...
Tell us which actresses you'd like as cinematic ambassador from your country (or State)!
And we'll end with France because they are SO greedy with the Actresses, always embarrassing the rest of hte world with their spectacular quality abundance.

I think from Indonesia is Christine Hakim, she really felt like Indonesian's Meryl Streep in here.
Genevieve Bujold, s'il te plait.
From Mexico, Silvia Pinal.
Where to start.......................Salma Hayak, Connie Neilsen, Monica Bellucci, Bardot, Indira Varma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Racquel Welch, Nicole Parker, Vanessa Williams...........Sophia Loren.......Eva Green...................
Last Saturday I saw Gong Li in the flesh. What a beautiful vision she is. Yes, my jaw dropped and I was so starstruck they had to revive me. More Gong Li on thefilmexperience plz!!
What about a shout out to Portugal?
Here's our most prestigious trio abroad: MARIA DE MEDEIROS (Pulp Fiction, Henry and June). BEATRIZ BATARDA (Night Train to Lisbon). ANA MOREIRA (Tabu).
And for most beautiful: Joana de Verona, Catarina Wallenstein, Maria João Bastos.
From Italy I suggest beautiful Ornella Muti...stateside famous for her role in FLASH GORDON but also Marco Ferreri's and (more recently) Lucas Belvaux's muse...and exquisite leading lady in several italian, french and spanish features
From Missouri, Miss Marsha Mason!!!
Mary Pickford
Actress; Movie Star; produced her own films; co-founded United Artists, AMPAS, the Motion Picture Relief Fund. A Sweetheart for her own era.
I'd like to make a little shoutout to an extremely versatile german actress that unfortunately passed away a few years ago, not so much well known for cinema, but TV: Evelyn Hamann.
She was not a beauty, but trust me, she was a great comedienne and could play ANY female role convincingly. I still miss her...
Raquel Welch is half Bolivian, and I'm Bolivian so I'm going to claim her
Cris -- claim away! what a beauty
Adri -- is that for Canada? wasn't mary Pickford canadian? or am i think of Norma Shearer
Massachusetts-
Bette Davis
and
Amy Poehler
Norma Shearer and Mary Pickford are both Canadian beauties. Damn straight!
Mary Pickford was born in Toronto. Her statue is by the Hospital for Sick Children, where her house had been. She became an American citizen and America's Sweetheart of the movies, but requested dual nationality in old age.
A real pioneer in having control over one's own artistic output, and considering that artists are a community that help each other in times of hardship and old age.
Liv Ullmann representing Norway: I approve! :) Looking forward to Miss Julie
Well, if we are claiming Missouri beauties, Kathleen Turner, Tess Harper and John Goodman (the most fetching drag queen on SNL).......and of course, one of the great beauties of the screen, Brad Pitt.
Lee Young-ae, representing.. South Korea! Remember Sympathy for Lady Vengeance? She hasn't made a single goddamn movie after that. It just bums me out to see such a talent of her caliber go to waste.
I'm not actually from Sweden, but I love all things from that country, so I'd like to mention Bibi Andersson, Ingrid Thulin and Harriet Andersson. What a great Swedish Triumvirate!
I'm from Serbia and I can't really choose between Milena Dravic (maybe best known among foreign cinephiles for her role in WR Mysteries of Organism) and Mirjana Karanovic (Grbavica, Underground). they are both great actresses and nice ladies.
From my home state/city: Miss Barbara Stanwyck
From my currrent state/city: Miss Jamie Lee Curtis
From my adopted country/city: Miss Audra McDonald (although Dietrich was first to come to mind)
From Hungary: Mari Törőcsik for being the first lady of films; but Éva Ruttkai was just as stunning and maybe even more of a queen in the hearts of the public. :) Can't go wrong with either.
Paul -- wow. i had no idea Audra was born in Germany
From Mexico- Maria Felix
I'm from Chile, so I think I should choose between Paulina García (Silver Bear at the Berlinale for her wonderful "Gloria"), Catalina Saavedra (Special Jury Prize at Sundance for her brave performance as "The Maid") and Gloria Munchmeyer (Volpi Cup winner at Venice Film Festival 1990 for "La luna en el espejo")... but that is only to name the most internationally prestigious and awarded names, because we also have some other actresses that I really love for her performances in the chilean cinema: Aline Kuppenheim ("Machuca"), Francisca Gavilán ("Violeta went to Heaven") to name a few...
I love this!
Barcelona: Vicky Peña (I know you would love her. Sondheim praised her Mrs. Lovett)
Chile: Paulina García. I still can't get over the fact she got zero awards traction last season
Israel: Hiam Abbass
Argentina: Norma Aleandro and Cecilia Roth
Romania: Luminita Gheorghiu
philippines: vilma santos
@Peggy Sue: So cool that you mentioned Vicky Peña! I saw her as Blanche DuBois and she was amazing...
Noecitos -- Oh, I'm so glad you loved her! She was amaaaazing! That's probably the single reason why I'm not buying this whole Blanchett infatuation. The world is round and there are other Blanches people!
Well if we narrow it down to people from your county, I can claim Kristen Wiig
I'm from Romania, so thanks to whoever said Luminita Gheorghiu. There's also Anamaria Marinca, the lovely actress who played in "4months, 3weeks & 2days". The interesting part in this is that Luminita is one of my mother's friends, where Anamaria was my sister's deskmate in primary school (and I was in the same class with her older brother). So for me it would be a tough choice between the two. ;)
Maggie Cheung! Always Maggie!!
