but is it a link post?

Awards Daily takes on the unfortunate phrase "but is it an Oscar movie?" in relation (partially at least) to Gone Girl.
Empire Leonardo DiCaprio continues to have a bajillion movies in development. He's now bought the rights toAmerican Wolf which Robert Zemeckis wanted, too
i09 Be careful what you wish for. We've always wanted Christopher Walken in another movie musical. But this picture of him as Captain Hook is TERRIFYING
The Stake good piece on the casting of Vince Vaughn in True Detective 2 and what has happened to the actors original gifts

Telegraph Profile of Luke Evans who headlines Dracula Untold. This time he actually acknowledges that "Noted Homosexual" business albeit in a very Jodie Foster way
Salon suggests that Woody Allen's Magic in the Moonlight (which I weirdly have not yet seen) could have been way more fascinating based on the real life magician that inspired it
Guardian so many film festivals happening at the same time. This is a recap of Fantastic Fest in Austin
BadAss Digest investigates why some trilogies will never split up their last film into two parts as is currently the trend. For this we must profusely thank The Four Musketeers?

The Guardian on Emma Watson. She continues to have the press hopeless enamored. And I heard random old ladies on the street talking about her UN speech the other day.
AV Club celebrates incest! Perhaps that was a poor choice of words. They're selecting famously incestuous pairs from recent movies & tv from Game of Thrones to August: Osage County

Viola photographed by Graeme Mitchellicymi
Last week the New York Times had fine ass profiles of two of our favorite creatives, director P.T. Anderson and  actress Viola Davis who is our unofficial 'star of the week' since she keeps inadvertedly being brought up in every post lately. Love her quotes in this piece, like...

“I always got the phone call that said: ‘I have a great project for you. You’re going to be with, hypothetically, Vanessa Redgrave, Julianne Moore, Annette Bening. Then I get the script, and I have a role that lasts for a page or two.”

I wish I'd written this
I was trying to voice my frustration about a new terrifying age of lost old movies post-streaming technology on twitter then other day but this KQED Arts article is way more articulate than I was being "For Cinephiles, Netflix is less and less an option." If anyone has a solution or a silver lining to any of this, please speak up!

Thanks for linking to the Netflix article. I've noticed an ever growing, and ever more alarming, list of titles either dropping off my DVD queue entirely or going to "extremely long wait." I don't rely on Netflix for getting DVDs at all. At this point, if it's not available streaming from the usual suspects, I"m more likely to just go on Amazon and buy a used copy of the DVD. It's a real problem for die hard movie fans, and not at all what I expected from the streaming era, when, if anything, it should be *easier* for companies to get their catalogue titles out to the public. Just license it to Amazon/Netflix/Hulu/Vudu - whatever. But it is definitely a hit and miss practice so far.

The Viola Davis profile is sad. Terribly acurate, but very sad.

Download the TCM APP - love it!

One bright spot on the Netflix/streaming movies issue - I was DELIGHTED to accidentally stumble upon hundreds of Criterion Collection releases on hulu plus. I had no idea that was part of their roster.

Viola talks like its soooo easy for Vanessa Redgrave (she who has spent decades elevating three-page roles) to get work in Hollywood.

September 29, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W

Hayden W: You realize Redgrave's outspokenness on politics alienates her from a lot of Hollywood decision makers. She has the talent and the complexion for the protection for the collection (Paul Mooney). Do not dare minimize the reality that Davis faces before she opens her mouth to audition. Her talent is not enough. They care what she looks like based on skin color alone. Not simply the subjectivity of beauty. Viola Davis continues to tell the truth to the indifference and shock of non-blacks.

Has anyone tried Facets? I just checked out their website based on a comment on that Netflix article and they seem to have a great stock of rare DVDs to rent by mail.

Christopher Walken is THE actor I will watch do anything at any time and any place.

I can't believe we're not commenting the horrendous wedding of George Clooney!!!

3rtful, calm the eff down. Good lord, your posts are miserable and rude. As Nathaniel has pointed out to you before, this isn't that kind of site. If you feel like getting into flame wars by wildly overreacting, there are plenty of other film sites that are friendly to that.

September 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W

Hayden W, I don't see how 3rtful wildly overreacted to your post. (I can't believe I just typed that, but I did.)

The Netflix article was absolutely fascinating, and completely sad. I find more and more of my discs hitting Very Long Wait, and I do a little dance if one of them actually bumps. I too have gone to the point where I buy a used copy, and more and more find myself rushing through as many Netflix discs as possible, as even in its current state it's hard to fathom there will be a proper substitute in the next few years (unless TCM gets a streaming service, in which case the hallelujah chorus can start singing).

Sorry, I think any sentence that begins "Do not dare minimize..." when I did no such thing (and even if I had...) does not constitute a pleasant discussion.

September 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W

You should really get Hola Unblocker if you want to take advantage of the Netflix catalog in other countries (which is IMMENSE and never leaves me wanting). Also there's MoreFlicks which will search Netflix across countries.

It doesn't have Sweet Sweetback's though so I guess it was all for naught.

September 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRahul

John T -- I would glady pay $50+ a month for a TCM service if it had their whole catalog on it. Research and restropectives would stop being so ridiculously cumbersome and expensive for the devoted cinephile.

I love Paul Outlaw. He is my favorite Paul after Verhoeven and Thomas Anderson.

September 30, 2014 | Unregistered Commenter3rtful

I get that Luke Evans probably went back in the closet due to pressure from agents etc., but I appreciate not knowing so much about an actors personal life. I stopped paying money to watch Tom Cruse because I found myself spending more time trying to figure out which way the lifts tilted than I did following the story.

Tim Curry must feel so insulted.
"We want Capt. Hook to look like Tim Curry. Who should we get to play him?"
"Hmm...Christopher Walken!"
"YES!"

September 30, 2014 | Unregistered Commentershawshank

I would think Mr. Curry would take it as a compliment seeing as how he isn't physically able to perform at the moment. Hopefully that will change.
