Coming Soon Milla Jovovich confirms she's about to make another Resident Evil movie, supposedly the final one. She turns 40 this year and started this series when she was but 25.

Out Alexis Arquette taking no prisoners in an interview. But bizarre that she didn't know her own sister was up for an Oscar!

Indie Wire the lineup of New Directors New Films this year The Tribe and White God are both featured. They feel like anything but "new" to me after a whole year of festivalling but I still haven't had the chance to see either - will they ever open theatrically or just keep doing festivals like this one for a second year?
In Contention most anticipated films of Sundance
We Recycle Movies you should check out Anne Marie's rainbow countdown to the Oscars
The Carpetbagger welcome to Phase 2 of the Oscars. Also: Mark Schultz changes his tune again on Foxcatcher. I am not saying this snarkily but with concern: this is why we need universal health care and easier access less stigma for mental illness treatment. Something is seriously wrong with this guy

American Sniper Mania
Grantland excellent piece by Mark Harris on why American Sniper's box office won't help its Oscar run ... "success breeds scrutiny"

Towleroad's the story of Björk's new album, released two months early. Sad she broke up with Matthew Barney. They seemed like such an iconoclast match

WHAT. Did not know this about Björk and Matthew Barney. Devastated.

"... the one reason to keep watching Girls"
People need to stop acting like there need to be reasons and defense of watching it. It's a good show. There.

I agree on the Mark Schultz stuff. So bizarre. And frankly, I cannot even get exasperated about it. Two people you were close to are dead because one shot the other and then died in jail, not to mention playing in a sport (UFC in this case) that can cause head trauma.

John Cameron Mitchell has this in pre-production. May Elle Fanning's auteur fever strike again:

And as far as reading American Sniper political pieces, I enjoy reading Matt Taibbi on movies as much as reading Joseph Califano or Lindy West talk films.

To say that Mark Schultz is mentally ill may be giving him too much credit. He sure seems dumb, though.

Thank heavens for Netflix. We are the Best is a great film!

What does your Sundance schedule look like?

"Alexis Arquette taking no prisoners in an interview. But bizarre that she didn't know her own sister was up for an Oscar!"

Puts things into perspective, doesn't it? Some people just don't care about this award stuff. My sister would probably react the same way if I were ever nominated. ;)

Some terrific sounding films in that Sundance piece.

I'm already tired of the endless thinkpieces criticizing American Sniper. It's a decent character study, a really good suspense/action movie, and far and away the best thing Eastwood has done in years. It's more complicated than both its defenders and its detractors give it credit for. It has two really good performances at its center, and it shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone how successful it was with the Academy and with the public (the limited release numbers were through the roof). Can we please move on already? At least to talk about the film it actually is instead of the film others want it to be or thought it should have been?

"American Sniper and Selma Oscar battle... that isn't really a battle but that people have suddenly made it into one"

Uh, you've been making it into one for a couple of weeks now, haven't you?

American Sniper is a polarizing film. Period. And its politics and effects it has on people is not as simple as left and right as journalists make it out to be. Michael Moore hated it. Jane Fonda loved it (compared it to her film Coming Home). Go figure.

My problem is American Sniper is that some people in the public eye who need attention are making it into a battle of Red vs. Blue. That's unfortunate and I'm sure kind of horrifying to someone like Bradley Cooper.

First, thank you so much for the link. When I saw it at the top I almost didn't believe my eyes.

In other news:

Schultz is so entertaining on Twitter...like a car crash, really. It's hard not to look right at him, even though I really know I should look away. When he went on his initial tirade it felt like a desperately stupid man trying to get attention moved over to his book, but now that he's doing so much backpeddling, and to such extremes, I'm truly concerned for his health. Something is amiss.

I really need to see American Sniper. The media/blog talk about this film is flooding and I'm trying to look away until I see the film...but it's so hard.

Mark Schultz is totally just a dummy who shouldn't be allowed to tweet. Cool interview on the music scores

Really loved that interview with composer Ben Talmi. He shares my love for the scores to GBH, Gone Girl, Interstellar, and especially, Birdman.

Ah, Milla Jovovich. Remember when there was a time when she wasn't making sequels upon sequels to franchises in genres no one cares about? Me either. Maybe Zoolander? She's too radiant and charismatic to waste away in yet another installment. Someone get her in a Woody Allen or a Judd Apatow comedy.

Alexis Arquette seems SO over the industry, I don't know why she keeps doing these juicy interviews but they sure are entertaining to read. Kissing and telling is a no-no but that Oprah story is awful, talk about invasion of privacy.

The whole Mark Schultz debacle reeks of someone who has no center of self beyond the physical. The studio's PR probably has him hog-tied from ever speaking about the movie again. Harvey had a hand in here somewhere, I bet he had an intern pen a request asking for comment about the homo stuff that ended up in the movie and that freaked Schultz out.

After three seasons, I've resigned to the fact that Girls is a technically well directed show about awful people behind and in front of the camera. This will not change, the characters will not change as a stance and study on masochistic unlikable characterization and the show will end where it began: with Lena Dunham purposelessly naked and eating a cupcake alone. Whatever, if the writers clearly don't care about their characters, why should I for 5.5 hours each year?

Really pissed that the lame-o who leaked Bjork's album. If there was ever a musician who deserved to have their art released on their own terms when it's completely ready, it's her. Apparently the album is amazing so that's the nice silver lining.
