The unfolding Bruce Jennfer story is another reminder, like the superb documentary Prodigal Sons by former high school football star turned trans documentarian Kimberly Reed, that external presentation does not always equal internal truth. Bruce became famous as such a traditionally masculine person in the late 70s, gold medal athleticism and all, which is I think why this whole thing surprised so many people. Including myself. In case you missed it we revisited Bruce Jenner's 1980 movie Can't Stop the Music this very month last year.

Because of a forgotten scheduling conflict involving, um, superheroes (mom, they're oppressing us again!) I had to postpone Jane Campion's poetic flowery romance for 'BEST SHOT' which was originally tonight. But here are 4 early entries for A Fistful of Films (which you have to agree is one of the best blog titles ever), Lam Chop Chop, Coco hits NY, and Zitzelfilm to whet your appetite for its visual splendor.

Just look at that cast: Marion Cotillard!! Léa Seydoux! Vincent Cassel! Nathalie Baye (who played Laurence's mother in Laurence Anyways)! And Gaspard Ulliel, too (who was in Saint-Laurent).
Surely I'm not the only one who immediately thought of Octavia Spencer in 30 Rock when hearing about the Harriet Tubman biopic? "I don't like Tubman. It sounds like a dude. Let's change it to Tubgirl."
Hollywood is unreliable to ever do the right thing and provide some space and opportunity to Viola Davis. Remember her last starring theatrical vehicle Won't Back Down died on arrival in its opening weekend which gave them the excuse no one is interested.
I'm starting to have really conflicting feelings about these historical dramas, especially when it comes to black history. On one hand it's crazy to me that Selma is the first major motion picture to tell the story of MLK, the same way I find it crazy that Harriet Tubman's story hasn't ever been told. On the other hand, I'm SO TIRED of slave movies (at least the way Hollywood makes them) when there's so much more to the black American experience and the black experience in general. I'm happy whenever someone like Viola Davis gets a lead role, but, like, can she get a good romantic leading role? Why can't we get a great movie about the Harlem Renaissance or something? It's just so frustrating.
thefilmjunkie: Also: You could argue it was 12 years late. (34 years after the death of Gandhi, we got Gandhi, after all, so why not aim for synchronicity by releasing the first major motion picture of MLK in 2002?)
I, too, was quite disappointed when I found out the Harriet Tubman movie was an HBO film. Like, I know that Oscar aren't everything, but we all know she should have one by now, and as a woman of color it's harder and harder to find projects that will garner you one...and THIS would garner you one! It was like "yay she's playing Harriet Tubman" and then four seconds later..."NO, it's for HBO!"
Oh well.
