Saoirse Ronan, All Grown Up

Behold the new poster for Oscar hopeful Brooklyn (reviewed at Sundance) which arrives in theaters on November 6th from Fox Searchlight.

Though it's not half as distinctive or even film-representative as the earlier teaser poster, one thing it does aptly convey is the maturation of Saoirse Ronan. Brooklyn is her bridge movie. She was a famous teen (see: Atonement). Now, at 21, she's an actress fully ready for those complicated adult roles that will surely come her way. She's terrific in the film, charting this young immigrant's progress from overwhelmed mouse to confident young romantic heroine.

Should Saoirse be nominated in Best Actress at 21, she won't break the record of fastest to two nominations. That record ain't budging since Angela Lansbury has held it for about 69 years now, winning her first two nominations by 20. But she will break the crowded tie for Lansbury's runner up (Kate Winslet, Sal Mineo, and Jennifer Lawrence all got to two Oscar nominations by the age of 22).

Do you think she'll manage it?

Do you think the movie (and Ronan's role, for that matter) is too "pretty" and/or "feminine" to get her a nomination? It seems the last time an actress got a nomination for a romantic drama was in the 90s. They don't seem to go for them anymore, not even in Best Actress.

(For instance, if we were in the 90s, I think Alicia Vikander would be a shoe-in for "Testament of Youth" but it aint gonna happen.)

I am so ready to love this movie, and have been rooting for Saoirse since "Hanna". (Yes, I'm a Ronan fan who somehow has not gotten around to "Atonement" yet.)

I have doubts but wow in Atonement she should have had that Oscar.

Domhnall Gleeson's in this? Man, he has such a talent for picking films that give him a decent role but leave him overshadowed by other members of the cast with much meatier roles!

I couldn't be more excited for the first first because I love the book after being forced to read it in school but instead fell in love with this novel and though Ronan was perfect casting over Mara who was originally cast. Coming from Ireland myself it doesn't get bigger then Ronan who is probably the most rewarded actress at the irish oscars (IFTAS) winning basically every year she has a film. I've been a fan since those bright blue eyes drew me in in Atonement and since then I've watched the greats films like Hanna and the medicore ones like how I live now. This role is what she needed because since being cast the great roles have flown in from Nina in the upcoming The Seagull film to Apigail in The Crucible on broadway. For all those who worry about all these young actresses around saoirses age going off their looks look at Ronan who vleJy thinks about her choices and I could be happier with her success and while she might not beat the lansbury record if the seagull is as great as I believe it will be she could break Lawrence's record of 3 nomn at 23 by doing it at 22. (Considering she gets the Brooklyn nom which I believe she will)

Easily one my most anticipated at TIFF. We don't get enough melodramas (or even romantic dramas), and I, too, love the book. Really hope she can pull off a nomination.

I love Ronan, and I'm eager to see this movie. But I agree with BVR: I don't think the Academy will reward this type of role, no matter how good she is.

Being a fan of Ronan since Atonement and it's crazy to think it's been 8 years since that. I wish her all the best, she's one of the good ones.

I found this amazingly bland and turgid. I think a nomination will be difficult because her character's main battle never seems that urgent or necessary. It's not as dramatic as it could or should be despite the film being visually sumptuous and ready for a great story. It's just not a great story. It's too...simple, I guess.

The earlier poster was definitively more beautiful! We'll pretend it's the official one. I really really like Saoirse and Julie Walters so I'll go see it as soon as I can.

Nope...doubt she will be the final five

No opinion, since I haven't seen the film. But I have to admit it's this year's winner of my Unbroken award for my total, foot-dragging, do-we-absolutely-have-to lack of interest. But War Horse was an earlier winner of that award and I loved that, so fingers crossed.

Like a lot of folks I'm eagerly awaiting this film. Romantic dramas about impossible love are my favorite, and this looks right up my alley. My favorite films of recent years are "Weekend" and "Bright Star." I'm ready to fall in love and get my heart broken!

Doesn't seem like an "oscar" film to me at all. I think she'll get buzz but oscar-ier and star-ier performances will crowd her out.

September 4, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAnonny

I hope she gets it. I find her much more interesting as an actress than Jennifer Lawrence, who I do enjoy. I just respond more to Ronan's acting sensibilities. Looking forward to this film.

I think she's fantastic in the film and it reminded me a lot of "An Education" (from tone, sensibility etc.). So I think she's got more than a fair chance. But I feel this might be one of those filme that get the lone actress nomination, nothing else.

September 5, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterPatrick

I've no doubt Ronan will be nominated for Brooklyn. A young woman of supreme acting talent, Ronan has amazed film goers with her performances in movies like Atonement (which should have won her an Oscar) The Lovely Bones, Death Defying Acts, The Way Back etc etc. Brooklyn came along at the right time for her, and I reckon she'll receive multiple award nominations for the film.

I'm all for more Oscars nominations (and wins!) for Saoirse. She's brilliant.
