Turkish Delight is excellent. It should have won the Oscar in 1973. Much better than the overrated Day for Night.

"I’ve watched the film dozens of times, and I couldn’t figure out, for the longest time, why watching it felt so satisfying. It’s a three hour long, emotionally draining film. But then I realised. Dogville is a revenge fantasy against oppression."

Never really saw it that way before. I just thought that I was secretly sort of sick in the head at how much I was totally feeling those last 20 minutes or so. But I can see that there's a sort of satisfaction in Grace surviving the bared teeth of Dogville and then, for better or worse, ending up on top. It's not the ideal way of going about things but when you're wronged, it's extraordinarily hard to not to want to serve back twice as hard as what was inflicted on you. So tempting but yet possibly dangerous and disastrous.

"When they go low, we go high", right?

I guess that's what also makes it satisfying. What if for once, we decided to go low? Even lower than they thought possible? Seeing someone get to surrender to that dark impulse that we dare not confront until we're pushed to the limit *is* a vicarious and disturbing thrill. Especially when the offending party or the evil is purged in some manner.

Redford is a classy classy guy with a lot of talent and a great career. Good for him. Hope he gets out on a high note. Boy do I love Dogville. Still my most cherished Nicole Kidman, Paul Bettany and Patricia Clarkson performances.

rick -- there are not checks and balances when the GOP runs all branches of government and their very platform (look it up) is anti-LGBT rights and pro deregulation (which gave us the Recession and poisoning citizens with polluted water and so on and so on and so on).

and besides, under fascists checks and balances don't remain for long. They are usually dismantled within a few years. Say goodbye to America as you know it unless a miracle of some kind occurs.

Nate -- OOPS. that was not purposeful. I shall fix.

Tony - i hope so, too. wish he'd been oscar nominated for All is Lost.

I love Robert Redford. I hope everything is okay with him and he really does just want to retire.

Hollywood forgives its bad boys too easily. (Gibson, Downey, etc.) Its women not so much. How long did it take for Winona to get back on everyone's good graces?

Nathaniel, thank you for being honest and acknowledging the horrific state the USA is in. I'm tired of people pretending things are going to be OK when the country is collapsing around us.

Is anyone else here thinking of moving to another country? It can be incredibly difficult depending on your situation, but perhaps worth contemplating if you're a member of a vulnerable group. The hate crimes and legal discrimination against us is only going to intensify, I'm afraid.
