SAG Nomination Surprises: Emily Blunt, Captain Fantastic, and More

As we've noted several times in the past, SAG nominations are often among the most surprising for two reasons. First, the nominating committee changes each year, drawn randomly from the Screen Actor's Guild enormous body of dues paying members. Second, because the members are randomly selected and (presumably) spread out more geographically than the easier to target Academy and Globe members, their nominations can often feel like they were voted on earlier and that's the case this year with more summer films nominated than other awards bodies went with.

The nominees with commentary are after the jump...

Yes! Viggo Mortensen so deserves this. But can he get the more difficult Oscar nomination?

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
CASEY AFFLECK / Lee Chandler – “MANCHESTER BY THE SEA”
ANDREW GARFIELD / Desmond Doss – “HACKSAW RIDGE”
RYAN GOSLING / Sebastian –“LA LA LAND”
VIGGO MORTENSEN / Ben – “CAPTAIN FANTASTIC”
DENZEL WASHINGTON / Troy Maxson – “FENCES”

Who is missing? The obvious absentee here is Tom Hanks for Sully. He has not been Oscar nominated since Cast Away but it's probably worth noting that SAG did nominate him for Captain Phillips (2013) when Oscar didn't in a tight race. Might Tom Hanks have to wait yet again to return to the Oscar fold?

Who might win? SAG can sometimes go very populist so if La La Land explode in time you might see the Gos winning. But for now this feels like a Casey vs Denzel race. Our guess is that Denzel will win. Yes he has two Oscars but he has never won the SAG.

Surprise. It's Emily Blunt!

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
AMY ADAMS / Louise Banks – “ARRIVAL”
EMILY BLUNT / Rachel – “THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN”
NATALIE PORTMAN / Jackie Kennedy – “JACKIE”
EMMA STONE / Mia – “LA LA LAND”
MERYL STREEP / Florence Foster Jenkins – “FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS”

Who is missing? With the surprise inclusion of Emily Blunt for her thriller and SAG making room for both of Oscar's main default nominee darlings (Adams & Streep) a lot of the key players as we've come to know them were shoved aside. No Huppert. No Negga. No Bening. The latter alarms me but then again... it is getting a very late start and SAG is kind of an early bird.

Who might win? I'm guessing Emma Stone. You?

Dev Patel and Hugh Grant are two leads nominated in this supporting category. But SAG voters are actually required to vote with the campaigns. Oscar voters are not.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
MAHERSHALA ALI / Juan – “MOONLIGHT”
JEFF BRIDGES / Marcus Hamilton – “HELL OR HIGH WATER”
HUGH GRANT / St Clair Bayfield – “FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS”
LUCAS HEDGES / Patrick Chandler – “MANCHESTER BY THE SEA”
DEV PATEL / Saroo Brierley – “LION”

Who is missing? No really obvious players. The precursors seem to have settled on these guys (two of them leads) though we still don't understand why people aren't shouting Ralph Fiennes in A Bigger Splash

Octavia Spencer has, arguably, the most endearing role in a film full of endearing roles.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
VIOLA DAVIS / Rose Maxson – “FENCES”
NAOMIE HARRIS / Paula – “MOONLIGHT”
NICOLE KIDMAN / Sue Brierley – “LION”
OCTAVIA SPENCER / Dorothy Vaughan – “HIDDEN FIGURES”
MICHELLE WILLIAMS / Randi Chandler – “MANCHESTER BY THE SEA”

Who is missing? This is the same lineup as the Globes so we could be locking up now. But given that there's no Bening in Best Actress, we should probably not read too much into there being on Gerwig in Supporting Actress. Perhaps not enough of the nominating committee saw 20th Century Women?

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
CAPTAIN FANTASTIC
FENCES
HIDDEN FIGURES
MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
MOONLIGHT

MORE ON THIS CATEGORY HERE

Who is missing? Who isn't? This was a very tough year to predict in ensemble. I only correctly guessed two of these (eep) thinking Lion, Hacksaw Ridge, and 20th Century Women would make it. La La Land obviously missed because it didn't deserve a spot -- it's laser focused on just 2 actors and they were justly nominated as leads so why double up? Other films besides the ones I incorrectly predicted that might have hoped to be here include Florence Foster Jenkins, Love & Friendship, A Bigger Splash, Little Men, Sully, etcetera...

Who will win? Moonlight we think. But we'll see. The tide could shift.

Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
“CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR”
“DOCTOR STRANGE”
“HACKSAW RIDGE”
“JASON BOURNE”
“NOCTURNAL ANIMALS”

Who might win? This could go any which way... but let's guess to Hacksaw Ridge which has more obvious stuntwork with actual actors since superhero action leans heavily toward CGI.

TELEVISION PRIZES

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series
RIZ AHMED / Nasir “Naz” Khan – “THE NIGHT OF” (HBO)
STERLING K. BROWN / Christopher Darden – “THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON: AMERICAN CRIME STORY” (FX Networks)
BRYAN CRANSTON / President Lyndon B. Johnson – “ALL THE WAY” (HBO)
JOHN TURTURRO / John Stone – “THE NIGHT OF” (HBO)
COURTNEY B. VANCE / Johnnie Cochran – “THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON: AMERICAN CRIME STORY” (FX Networks)

The usual suspects

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series
BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD / Lacie – “BLACK MIRROR” (Netflix)
FELICITY HUFFMAN / Leslie Graham – “AMERICAN CRIME” (ABC)
AUDRA McDONALD / Billie Holiday – “LADY DAY AT EMERSON’S BAR & GRILL” (HBO)
SARAH PAULSON / Marcia Clark – “THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON: AMERICAN CRIME STORY” (FX Networks)
KERRY WASHINGTON / Anita Hill – “CONFIRMATION” (HBO)

Bryce Dallas Howard registers as the only surprise here -- who did she bump out?

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
STERLING K. BROWN / Randall Pearson – “THIS IS US” (NBC)
PETER DINKLAGE / Tyrion Lannister – “GAME OF THRONES” (HBO)
JOHN LITHGOW / Winston Churchill – “THE CROWN” (Netflix)
RAMI MALEK / Elliot Alderson – “MR. ROBOT” (USA Network)
KEVIN SPACEY / Frank Underwood – “HOUSE OF CARDS” (Netflix)

no comment. It makes us crazy that SAG doesn't have separate categories for supporting players.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
MILLIE BOBBY BROWN / Eleven – “STRANGER THINGS” (Netflix)
CLAIRE FOY / Queen Elizabeth II – “THE CROWN” (Netflix)
THANDIE NEWTON / Maeve Millay – “WESTWORLD” (HBO)
WINONA RYDER / Joyce Byers – “STRANGER THINGS” (Netflix)
ROBIN WRIGHT / Claire Underwood – “HOUSE OF CARDS” (Netflix)

Aside from Robin Wright SAG went for an entirely fresh slate. Two for Stranger Things!

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series
ANTHONY ANDERSON / Andre Johnson – “BLACK-ISH” (ABC)
TITUSS BURGESS / Titus Andromedon – “UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT” (Netflix)
TY BURRELL / Phil Dunphy – “MODERN FAMILY” (ABC)
WILLIAM H. MACY / Frank Gallagher – “SHAMELESS” (Showtime)
JEFFREY TAMBOR / Maura Pfefferman – “TRANSPARENT” (Amazon)

Still annoyed that Shameless is considered a comedy. And that Macy keeps getting honored when his superior costar does not.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
UZO ADUBA / Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren – “ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK” (Netflix)
JANE FONDA / Grace Hanson – “GRACE AND FRANKIE” (Netflix)
ELLIE KEMPER / Kimmy Schmidt – “UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT” (Netflix)
JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS / President Selina Meyer – “VEEP” (HBO)
LILY TOMLIN / Frankie Bergstein – “GRACE AND FRANKIE” (Netflix)

SAG can't go without their "crazy eyes". Both Grace & Frankie made it.

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
THE CROWN (Netflix)
DOWNTON ABBEY (Masterpiece/PBS)
GAME OF THRONES (HBO)
STRANGER THINGS (Netflix)
WESTWORLD (HBO)

Do you think they'll say goodbye to Downton Abbey with one last win? It's already taken this prize three times in its run. Or will they finally give it up for Game of Thrones (it never wins here but its stunt ensemble does). Or will they want fresh faces and go for Westworld which has very impressive acting all around?

I enjoyed Stranger Things just like everyone but a "best ensemble acting" nomination? That seems like a stretch with a fairly uneven cast. Who would you have voted for here?

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
THE BIG BANG THEORY (CBS)
BLACK-ISH (ABC)
MODERN FAMILY (ABC)
ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK (Netflix)
VEEP (HBO)

Who would you have nominated for this category?

Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series
“GAME OF THRONES” (HBO)
“MARVEL’S DAREDEVIL” (Netflix)
“MARVEL’S LUKE CAGE” (Netflix)
“THE WALKING DEAD” (AMC)
“WESTWORLD” (HBO)

Who might win? Game of Thrones is an awards magnet (particularly in this category) but let's root for Westworld this year.

READY -- i'd be surprised if these were exact matches myself. SAG isn't usually that close and their nominations were a little surprising this year

HAYDEN -- same thing as with Rabbit Hole (suffering mother). she glides through. Shame really because The Paperboy was one of her all time best performances.

3RTFUL -- Spencer is really good in Hidden Figures. Will she be in my five? No. But fact: people have been nominated just about every year for less than she does in this movie and in The Help so it's fine.

December 14, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Guys, the Best Actress line-up could *still* change. SAG historically includes at least one head-scratcher per year(Blunt). Adams isn't that safe either, she had major momentum for Big Eyes and well....Nothing. Though this years circumstances are very different it could go either way. I love Meryl Streep as much as anyone else but why? Her...Again?! And I pray to God that Supporting Actress get's a major shake up. With the Oscarsowhite controversy of last year they have a *lot* of potential names/ethnicities to change that. Not that ethnicity is how we should measure diversity but it is how voters will be influenced this year, no doubt.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda Buffamonteezi

It's really hard for us in the uk to get that interested at this point cos half of the potential films don't open here till January and none of us have access to Hollywood in whatever form that takes,if you get screeners your so lucky.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordon

Amanda - you hope Best Supporting Actress gets a shakeup due to #Oscarssowhite, yet that's the category with 3 black actresses. I'm confused.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

Because Lily Gladstone. She must be nominated.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

I am OVER THE MOON about that Bryce Dallas Howard nomination. She was FANTASTIC in that episode of Black Mirror.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDancin' Dan

@DJDeeJay what Jonathan said. If they nominated Gladstone that would be major, both artistically and politically, because we know now that the latter has more influence than the former, unfortunately. And for the record, I hate having to think of artistic recognition in these terms. And Also, she deserves it, and it wouldn't be a safe pick like Spencer. Though admittedly site unseen, I'm assuming that's how Spencer got in. I was surprised Monae didn't get a nomination somewhere. And I was very surprised that Taraji P. Henson was a no-show on the Globes roster.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda Buffamonteezi

Dancin Dan: Like Colin Farrell in The Lobster, she absolutely was doing her best with some WEAK material.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

thanks sean c. I forgot Patel.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterjon

I'll be fine with a (likely) Amy Adams nomination. She was really good in Arrival and it's an atypical Oscar movie. But I will give a huge Liz Lemon eye roll for Meryl Streep's nomination for Florence Foster Jenkins. Like, seriously, what the hell? Please nominate someone less prolific like Bening, Huppert, Negga, etc. She does not need to be nominated for every half-decent performance of hers. So many actors are snubbed for giving the performance of their lives, so I am comfortable in saying she can sit out this year even though she is quite charming in FFJ.

I have also not seen Hacksaw Ridge, but Andrew Garfield looks terrible in it. Perhaps the surprise on Oscar morning will be a nomination for him in Silence?

The Ensemble nomination for Captain Fantastic was a pleasant surprise. Will Hidden Figures get a best picture nomination, or will it go the way of 3:10 to Yuma, American Gangster, or Hairspray and have to settle for this ensemble nomination?

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

Streep is inching closer and closer to an Oscar nomination. Two weeks ago I didn't think it would happen but now it's looking better and better every day. 20 Oscar nominations!

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrandz

I am happy for Captain Fantastic's ensemble nod as I really loved the whole cast. I really wish Craig Robinson had gotten more traction with his brilliant performance in Morris From America as i was hoping for a Mo'nique style nod with him in which a comedic performer does a role that is a change of pace.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEli

Where's The Birth Of A Nation? Thought that was supposed to sweep every award this year?

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTOM

Where's The Birth Of A Nation?

Come on, now. The deck was stacked against that film:

- Nate Parker is not the second coming of Orson Welles (that said, the film is not as bad as some films nominated for Oscars, but a novice black filmmaker can't be mediocre or imperfect and hope to conquer awards season)

- Nate Parker's personal life

- Loving, Fences, Hidden Figures, Moonlight there to take its place(s)

- last and the opposite of least: the subject matter

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

I thought these nominations were a slight step ahead of the Globes. The only nomination that had me rolling my eyes was Meryl Streep. Now look, I respect Meryl and I get that she's very respected. But have her give someone else a turn!!

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMatt St. Clair

All day, I've been trying (and failing) to contain my amusement at the degree of hand-ringing that has greeted La La Land's omission from the Best Ensemble category. In the eyes of some, the Best Picture race is now "wide open," while others insist La La Land can no longer win. As you and others have correctly observed, the SAG award is for Best Ensemble Acting - not Best Picture - and taking nothing away from the singers and dancers who comprise the La La Land ensemble, the film does not actually HAVE an acting ensemble in the traditional sense. It has two leads, one supporting actor, and a few brief cameos. And yet, it seems impossible for some to distinguish an Ensemble Acting category from a de facto Best Picture Award (I'm not sure where these folks were when Full Monty, The Help and American Hustle won the top prize from SAG, but no matter.) Looking at the situation objectively, (1) La La Land really has no business being nominated for an Ensemble Acting Award, and (2) there is just no way, based on the sheer number of Oscar nominations La La Land can reasonably be expected to receive, across a broad swath of different categories, that it will not be the Oscar nominations leader. Hell, it could get three nominations in the Best Song category alone. The question for me is not whether La La Land will lead the pack on January 24th, but by how wide a margin? Double that of its nearest competitor? It's conceivable. So, I have to admit...it's going to be kind of fun to see all these Chicken Littles change their tune about La La Land's Best Picture prospects after those nominations come out.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJosh R

Josh R: Actually, the limit for nominees in Original Song is 2. They changed it after Dreamgirls and Enchanted got three nominations in consecutive years. What I think it's supposed to do is not make people think "this is a big snub" when something gets 9 nominations, but 3 are in Original Song. And as far as winning BP? Well, American Hustle and The Revenant didn't, so it could still go another, less nominated, direction.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

@ Josh R

Two nominations is the maximum in the song category. I think La La is looking at a total haul of ten nominations, Moonlight at least seven.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Wow Andrew Garfield is really getting that Oscar nom huh?
At the Oscars, I think it's gonna be:
Garfield
Gosling
Affleck
Washington
Hanks

Thank god the SAG noms are not really that weird as usual.
Actress has become quite tricky, now that Bening is gradually losing the campaign.
My predix for Oscar:
Adams
Stone
Portman
Huppert
Streep

I never see that Mahershala is gonna win the whole thing and Octavia getting nommed again from a mile, but GOOD FOR THEM!

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

Huppert needs a little post-SAG booster shot, like a Golden Globe win and/or a BAFTA nod.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer... Is this The Help reunion or what? Where's Jessica Chastain when you need her?

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPJ

Huppert needs a little post-SAG booster shot, like a Golden Globe win and/or a BAFTA nod.
Elle won't be eligible for BAFTA because of the release date (unless they changed it, which, oddly, doesn't sound like Picturehouse is going to do).

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCinesnatch

Really happy both Millie/Winona are nominated. They were so good in Stranger Things! And oh my god, Bryce Dallas Howard for Black Mirror. Yesss!

Every time Meryl Streep is nominated, it's both a happy and sad experience.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterdfjldkhfs

Not as disappointed with SAG as last year ... thank GAWD they didn't nominate Helen Mirren again.

Troy H - agreed. Meryl gets nominated for things that no other actress would get any buzz for. Like Julie and Julia??? I was like 16 when that movie happened and I still knew it was blasphemous. Not saying she wasn't good, but Oscar? For playing Julia Child in a B-grade Hallmark movie? Not only was she nominated, she won awards...she was considered to be in contention for the award with Sandy Bullock. That would've NEVER happened if someone else played her. And it stole the spotlight from Gabby Sidibe and Carey Mulligan who were actually the best that year. At least this movie is better than that one, but it's sad to waste the opportunity to boost the career of Ruth Negga, or finally tip the industry hat to Isabelle Huppert's career, on someone who's been vastly rewarded over her career and did a solid job in a movie that won't be remembered in a few years. And I don't think Streep even wants the attention/her twentieth nom for this film. She wasn't even at the critics choice.

/3rtful - I agree ... like, I love Octavia Spencer and I think she does her niche really well, and I'm so happy that someone so unorthodox in Hollywood has done so well post-Oscar win. But to join Whoopi Goldberg and Viola Davis as the only black actresses to garner multiple nominations?? It feels strange. Even Oprah missed out on that when she got snubbed for The Butler. If anything, I would've rather she had been nominated for Fruitvale Station because it was at least a bit different, and a more harrowing film, with a role that seemed more Oscar-worthy (though I haven't seen Hidden Figures yet).

Jamie - Agree that Streep has a good shot at BAFTA, but Ruth Negga has a high probability of being nominated there. She's Irish and more well-known in the UK.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

With that said, I'm still happy for Octavia and the fact that these barriers are being broken, so I'd still be happy if it happened. Interested to see if Janelle can favor in at all for her breakout year, tho.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

So happy for Streep, Adams, Mortensen, Grant, Hedges. Sad for Bening, Huppert, Foster, Gerwig.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterErick Loggia

To put it bluntly, Emily is the odd one out n much as I adore La Streep, she doesn't need a 20th nom to break her unsurpassable record.

Sad tt it looks like The Bening has no chance o a win even if she did manage to snuck in, as no actor (except for Marcia Gay Harden) has ever won the Oscars wo a SAG nod.

Is Elle not rel in UK yet to qualify for Bafta? The Bafta is usually more french friendly than Hollywood n Huppert will def has a good chance o winning if she's nom thr (hello, Riva n Cortillard).

The lock for actress now look like Stone, Portman n Adams. I'm prayin hard for Huppert n The Bening to get the final 2 slots.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

Well...

La La Land is Center in two Actors.

The same we could say of Million Dollar Baby: Center in Clint, Hilary and Morgan.

They got a nomination for best ensemble. Only three Actors nominated: Clint, Hilary and Morgan. Check on Imdb. Is there.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJon

Jon -- it's true of Million Dollar baby but at least 3 is an ensemble, however silly. There is a whole different word for 2 and that's "duo". No one thinks of duos as groups. Thank god really as that would have been the silliest nomination.

dfjldkhfs

Every time Meryl Streep is nominated, it's both a happy and sad experience.
this. Meryl is so fun at events but if they didn't feel the need to give her an Oscar nomination as soon as she signs for each part before she's even stepped on set, the nominations would be so exciting because each would be a new record you could cheer.

Isn't it strange to think back to the time she *wasn't* nominated for The Hours or Prairie Home Companion... maybe the solution is for her to have multiple films each year so that she CAN'T be nominated for everything?

Eli -- more attention for Morris in America would have been fun but at least there is that Spirit nomination? I guess that gross of only $91,000 (ouch) did the prospects of attention in.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Nathaniel- but if Streep did have multiple movies each year then she would be crucified and accused of "stealing" all the roles.

I get it. Most of you are upset.

But what she is doing in FFJ is actaually difficult and quite impressive. We are just used to her being able to do anything that many are quick to dismiss her. And SAG (actors) recognize that. For this role, she is deserving for awards consideration. Do I think she needs to be nominated for every role... no... and she isn't.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

If Meryl Streep gets this 20th nomination, growing an obscene excess of Oscar nods, she will also be stealing a nomination from a far worthier performance--Benning or Negga (Huppert is guaranteed Blunt's spot). What is this hold she has over these voters? Why not wait for truly brilliant work from her, especially in a year with such rich work from so many under rewarded actresses?

I love Huppert but she has no chance of winning. Oscar has only awarded three foreign language actors.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

People forget that actors LOVE Streep. They also have seen and like Florence Foster Jenkins. Oscar has a legacy that does not always line up with personal choices. A 20th nomination for her bookends her career in a very logical, symmetrical way.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJono

Jono, you're right about bookends. But her career isn't over.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

If Bryce Dallas Howard bumped out Jeannie Berlin for The Night Of, it's not cool.

December 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMarsha Mason

Jamie --i agree that what she's doing in Florence is difficult and impressive. It's my fav performance by her since Julie & Julia. But I think why people are going to be freaked this year if Streep gets in is because everyone considers it such a great and overflowing year for Lead actresses. If they have to hold a spot for both her and Amy, even in such a year like this, there is just never any chance for underdogs with rare buzz (like Huppert & Negga) or other older actresses doing arguably career crowning work (Bening).

needless to say this Oscar year is going to be a nail-biter right through to the nomination announcement since SAG & the Globes & the CCMAs didnt line-up all that neatly and it's hard to deny that Negga & Huppert haven't been buzzing for months (even though they missed today)

December 15, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Nathaniel, actually "20th Century Women" was one of the first screeners sent to SAG. If true, then you need to reconsider your prediction of Bening and Adams.

December 15, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterleon

I don't think the Best Actress line up will be the same for the Oscars as the first commenter said. I still have my money on Huppert getting in, and Streep being booted out. I think Streep will get the Emma Thompson treatment, just almost there but not quite. Adams feels like a lock. I also feel Bening will get in.

Oscars line up predictions:
Amy Adams, Annette Bening, Isabelle Huppert, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone.

Re: Streep being nominated for her wonderful work in FFJ. If it actually happens I wouldn't be too upset, only frustrated because there have been far more richer, dimensional and layered performances by actresses this year. As Nathaniel said, it would be egregious to have Streep's performance supersede the likes of Huppert, Negga or Bening, who are real possibilities with strong momentum in the campaign trail. Somebody said earlier that Streep is no default nom. No, she is. In spite of Streep's enormous talent, the Academy has developed a bias for her when it comes to considering nominations in this category. Just the mention of Streep in a film is enough to start the Oscar buzz no matter whether the work merits it or not. That's what a default nomination means. It's not about the actual quality of an actor's performance but more about how voters take the decision of nominating it in a given year.

December 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJones

Nat, a hypo Q: if it boils down to the final spot, w Stone, Portman, Adams n Streep r in, who will be yo Sophie's Choice?

The Bening or La Huppert?

I kno its cruel, but if it has to come down to this, I wld take Huppert.

December 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

Why should Meryl be snubbed? She has always been good and deserving. Just because she has been nominated 101 times doesn't mean she should give up being nominated. Wanna shut her out? Well, just need to work harder & be better than she is!

December 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEthan

Emily's SAG nomination comes as a huge surprise. Much as I want her to get her first Oscar nod, I don't think she deserves it for Girl on the Train (the movie was a mess). It's the same way I feel about Viola Davis - I'm happy she's finally going to clinch gold but rather disappointed (and furious) that it all boils down to category fraud. And please don't get me started on Negga - I've watched Loving twice yet I don't get all that love for her, It's a fine performance like Meryl's in Florence but pales in comparison to Huppert, Stone and Rebecca Hall and some others whom I've seen. Hopefully the final 5 would be Stone, Huppert, Portman Bening and Adams.

December 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJans

If they nominated Meryl Streep for anything, then why last year she wasn't nominated for Ricki and the Flash?

December 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJack

Ethan - ha ha ha you're so right !!!....so damn right !!!

December 15, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterarturo

Ethan -- lol. that's exactly the thing only not how you intended in. The point is just that: in many years people are better than Streep but she beats them to a nomination anyway. ;)

December 15, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Nathaniel, Arturo, sigh .... dont even get me started. Many times it's not about being the best or deserving .... 2003 she wasn't even nominated for The Hours?! Was Nicole more deserving? Thanks to her make-up artist :) 199, was Gwyneth more deserving than Meryl in One True Thing? Come on! in 2010, Sandra for The Blind Side over Julie & Julia? Come-On x 2!
& yes Meryl was't even nominated for Ricki & The Flash - so it's not by default she gets a nomination :)

December 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEthan

Regarding Julie and Julia's nomination: "That would've NEVER happened if someone else played her."

You're so right! Because no one could have played Julia Child like her. Same with FFJ.

December 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterArlo

Actually, I would have liked to see Gena Davis play Julia Child. Davis is six feet tall, red haired, the right age, and full of joie de vivre. I also would have believed that she could have been a spy.

Streep not nominated: Ricki and the Flash, The Giver, The Homesman, Suffragette, Hope Springs, etc.

Maybe she gave a more memorable performance in Florence Foster Jenkins and it's a more memorable film? It's a free country, and not everyone has to think the same way (thank God).
