Beauty vs Beast: The Witches of Oz

Jason from MNPP here, trying to stop myself from making a deal with the devil to wish this entire week away before it's even really begun -- how can I hold off though? The Witch is out this weekend! I've been clamoring for the Sundance sensation since last year's Sundance, where it was a sensation, LAST YEAR, for Satan's sake. My patience is as worn-thin as the hair on a witch's chinny-chin-chin, yo. Anyway I was bothered and bewildered this morning to see that I have never used the most famous pair of witches of ever for our "Beauty vs Beast" series, so I'd say that it's high time we conjured this contest up (and we're talking about the 1939 film here, so keep Wicked out of it)...

PREVIOUSLY Turns out it wasn't just at the box-office that interest in the Zoolander films turned out to be very unpretty indeed - the contest between Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller's mad sexy creations was pretty uneventful too. It was the male model with the most-est who strutted off with the win though, taking 52% of the vote. Said Steven:

"The reason for Zoolander over Mugatu..... Magnum!!!!"

When you think about it, Glinda was meaner to Dorothy than the WWotW. She gave her shoes that she knows someone would murder her over, and didn't tell her how she could go home at the beginning.

Both are irresistible but I have to go with Glinda. She travels in a bubble, has a sensitive nose as evidenced by her remark when the Wicked Witch dematerialized the first time "What a smell of sulphur!, dresses like a crazed former debutante and has that awesome fluttery voice.

Glinda might be 'Popular', but The Wicked Witch is 'Defying Gravity'!

Even though her voice is pure treacle I still go for Glinda, I love the soap bubble entrance. And that is a great entrance. Plus I want a magic wand.

I actually can't decide. Glinda is more than a bit of a bitch, and that perma-smile just makes her seem even worse. BUT, the Wicked Witch of the West is very vocally anti-Toto, and even an avowed non-lover of dogs like myself can't hate Toto.

I love Glinda, but how can you beat Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch of the West? Perfectly modulated camp, an amazing laugh, and at least she was so much more up front about how she was screwing over Dorothy. Did you have to wait that long to tell her, Glinda? Did you?

WWOTW all the way. This movie came out in 1939 and everyone regardless of age knows who she is. In each retelling from Wicked to Once Upon a Time she is always compelling. Glinda was never seared into my memory as a child. But WWOTW was.

Nicole Kidman says that watching the WWOTW was what first made her want to act.
