Elizabeth Debicki in Guardians Vol 2 and The Night Manager
Murtada here. Big studio franchises are aggressively courting actressexuals. Following in the heels of Laura Dern joining Star Wars, now comes the news that Elizabeth Debicki will be featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.
Debicki is sort of an obsession at The Film Experience. We wrote about her here. And here. She is short listed for Villain of the Year at The Film Bitch Awards. Debicki stole The Man from U.N.C.L.E (2015) and was the most arresting figure in The Great Gatsby (2013). So much so, we thought Gatsby will be remembered mostly for being the first film in her huge career, more than anything else.
Debicki’s Guardians 2 character is being kept secret. The internet though is rife with speculation...
There’s a theory she may be Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel. Let’s take that with a grain of salt. So many actresses have been rumored for that role. From Emily Blunt to her Huntsman co-stars Charlize Theron and Jessica Chastain to Margot Robbie and Rebecca Ferguson. Could Marvel hire someone not that famous for such an iconic part? They have done it before before with Chris Hemsworth for Thor. Still that's probably not true. It’s just Debicki's fandom wishing her part in Guardians 2 to be substantial.
Before all that though Debicki takes a TV turn with April’s AMC and BBC John Le Carre mini series The Night Manager. Directed by Danish Oscar winner Susanne Bier the series tells the story of Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston), a British soldier turned luxury hotel night auditor. Pine is recruited by intelligence operatives (including Olivia Colman) to go undercover as part of a sting operation against Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie), an arms dealer. Debicki plays Roper’s girlfriend, Jed. Pine of course falls for her. Shades of Tequila Sunrise (1988). Will the menage a trois will be as scorching hot as Pfeiffer/Gibson/Russell. Highly doubtful although Hiddleston/Debicki will definitely bring lots of their own heat.
Being a prestige mini series and all, The Night Manager is premiering at the Berlinale this week. Early word is that Debicki steals it. Of course she does, that’s her MO.
Are you looking forward to these projects? Or would you rather see this lanky Australian in Carol: The Early Years?

Carol: The Early Years - Heehee. Who's Abby? Kate Mara?
I've been waiting for her to reach mega-stardom. Surely it's a matter of time? I saw her on stage with Cate Blanchett and Isabelle Huppert, and she just about walked away with the whole show. And that's saying something against those two.
I'm getting impatient, she needs to break out already! I have thought for a while that she should get a Marvel role, or a role in a blockbuster of some kind since her height really is a great asset for films like those, especially since getting cast in a 'regular drama' may be difficult as she would stick out like a sore thumb. I'm pleased she did get in with Marvel, but I really hope its something substantial like Captain Marvel, rather than a half-baked small supporting character! I know there were rumours of there being 2 new female characters in the next Thor film and thought that with a cast of Hemsworth, Hiddleston and La Blanchett she would have been a perfect addition. The Night Manager airs in the UK from this Sunday so I will be tuning in!

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY TO BE DIRECTED BY STREISAND!!!!
Every time that I see that picture of her I think it's Dakota Fanning!
I love the idea of a Carol prequel. If they wanted to get really creative they could make it a Rebecca prequel as well. Irresistible women who love women and the men who hate them for it. Meeting in the spaces of decadent elite excess in the (otherwise depressed)1930s.
It's great that she's getting opportunities--she's such an arresting screen presence. Would love to see her work more with other actresses. Imagine the electricity of a pairing with Lupita.
She's one of the actresses that I want to hit big, along with Nina Arianda. It's just divine to see two ethereally beautiful women playing character roles.
Blowing up too soon might be a curse, so watch out Vikander. We don't want another Sorvino.
Fadhil: YES about Debicki AND Nina Arianda. I love them both so much.
James Gunn has previously said that Carol Danvers wouldn't be in the movie, and that he wants to keep Starlord as the only human in the ensemble.
The other notable female members of the iteration of the Guardians that the movies are using as Phyla-Vell and Moondragon, either of whom would be the MCU's first LGBT superhero (they were a couple). It's not clear that she's playing a member of the team, though, and beyond that it could be anyone.
Debicki stood out to me even in the trailer for The Great Gatsby, so I'm interested to see her in this.
Sean C.: If she is going to be Carol Danvers, that might mean Debicki is going to be in the post-credits scene. After all, those aren't "the movie" in the strictest sense of the term.
Some subtle Hugh Laurie shade there. I saw what you did. Ha!
summer: Hugh Laurie has his moments of charm, though. Stuart Little. Monsters vs Aliens. Jeeves and Wooster. It's kind of unfortunate he's most known as Gregory House.
Hell to the yes! She is stunning and would be absolutely perfect for Carol Danvers.
