New Laura Linney Movie Tops The Box Office

Don't you love headlines that are technically true but twisted to serve an agenda? If The Film Experience ran the world movies led by great actresses would always be event movies. Unfortunately for now we're stuck with The Lovely Laura Linney as a police chief within the context of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. [sigh] But what can you do? Summer is cruel that way.

I started a new project. I will watch one movie of each year chronologically from 1917 to 2016.

For now i watched:

Easy Street (Charlie Chaplin, 1917)
The Outlaw and His Wife (Victor Sjรถstrรถm, 1918)
Blind Husbands (Erich von Stroheim, 1919)
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (John S. Robertson, 1920)

No offence to Laura but Why?weren't there better kids films to appear in.

June 5, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermark

Mark, you know the Turtles gig was the best paying offer.

I'm a bit reluctant to watch Mandalay. I know the intent is to provoke but sometimes you just wanna watch a movie you're curious about without it ruining your day.

I saw The Lobster, which I really, really liked. Smart, unique, funny, disturbing. Packed theater. Glad it's doing well in limited release.

Also, I recently saw two films that bookended a trip (one I downloaded the rental on my iPad, the other was one of the selections on the flight itself)--The Family Fang and The Gift.

I was VERY pleasantly surprised by The Family Fang. It's not a masterpiece, but it's funny and touching. As a big Nicole Kidman fan, it was a pleasure to see her in an actual good movie, and I really liked her a lot in this. The cast was uniformly strong, though.

I watched The Gift since I like a good thriller and it got strong reviews when it was released last year. I did not intend to have a Jason Bateman double feature--it just turned out that way. I thought it built nicely but then fell apart in the final act. I wasn't really sold on it overall, but it was entertaining enough.

Does anyone know if there's a chance Love & Friendship will get a wider release in the next weekend or two? It's doing quite well.

June 5, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterScottC

Scott C -- it's very nearly wide (depending on how you define wide) as it's just over 800 theaters now. I imagine it's only got one more expansion but it has been going very well so fingers crossed.

I saw Love & Friendship yesterday morning. It was so fun to watch. Kate Beckinsale I hope doesn't get overlooked for Best Actress as she gives the performance of her career.

June 5, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSteven

I definitely feel that Beckinsale will get a GG Comedy nod. An Oscar nomination will be an uphill battle due to the film's early release date.

What would be a plausible, non-embarrassing Laura Linney franchise? Another US attempt at adapting "Prime Suspect", maybe? TV is so full of procedurals, though, it seems like it would take a pretty special variation to get people to pay theater $. I could also see her doing something along the lines of Vera Farmiga in "The Conjuring" films.

June 5, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDave S.

Is it too soon to pitch Linney as the new Anna Madrigal in a "Tales of the City" relaunch? I'm not sure it needs remaking, but worse ideas have certainly made it to premium cable.

June 5, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDave S.

Been vouching it this weekend, watching L'atalante and sex, lies & videotape, two fascinating time capsules
Finally going to see High Rise tonight, which is exciting, because it also means I can listen to the Lobster/Splash/High Rise podcast.

June 5, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMike in Canada

Finally find a way to see "Applause" & OMG! Whoever distributed (or lack there of) this gem really screw il up. Paprika Steen gives one of the best (I'm serious here) performance by an actress...E-V-E-R. There's something very wrong with a world that allows a amazing film like that to be ignored. And Paprika Steen (The name, the Face, THE RAW TALENT). Shame just a shame...

12 Years A Slave finally made its way to UK television - thought that it was wonderful and sits just behind Stranger By The Lake at the top of my 2013 list.

Was a little surprised that Lupita had such limited screentime - loved her, Paulson, Ejiofor and Fassbender.

3rtful - I'm due a rewatch of Manderlay but from memory I recommend it (it seems to have a bad rep, particularly amongst Von Trier fans). Very confrontational - I interpreted it as attacking the arrogance of liberal white America in trying to be a saviour in 'freeing slaves' but failing to create any kind of support network. Effectively taking a group of institutionalised people, removing their homes and telling them to fend for themselves. Not comfortable viewing but I remember Isaach De Bankole, Mona Hammond, Bryce Dallas Howard and (especially) Danny Glover all giving excellent performances.

I would like to read 30 in depth essays on the politics and worldview of Manderlay but most critics seemed to pretend that it never existed...

June 5, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterkermit_the_frog

Saw X-MEN. Good golly, McAvoy and Fassbender are giving so much (SO MUCH) to this series. Wish the series could live up to their awesomeness.

Also binge-watched THE NIGHT MANAGER with Tom Hiddleston. Very cool.

June 5, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

I saw X-men and it is not nearly as bad as everyone says it is (this includes Lawrence) I enjoyed it very much. Sophie Turner is wonderful.

I also saw Working Girl. It holds up pretty well.

June 5, 2016 | Unregistered Commentertom

stjeans -- YAY! She was a nominee here but so few people have seen that movie. (sigh)

June 5, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

tom: I LOVE Working Girl. Years (and years) ago, at the very start of my Oscar fever, I bought VHS tapes of all the supporting actress movies of 1988 (making me the only teenager in the country who could loan you a copy of The Accidental Tourist), and from then I watched Working Girl all the time. It deserves its place in Mike Nichols highlight reel.

June 5, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMike in Canada

Nate--I remember & it's thanks to you that I looked & looked & looked for it. Finally I found a dvd of it at my public Library. Let's hope darling Paprika will be seen again, for the great joy of every actressexual everywhere.

June 5, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

Ernest and Celestine: A beautiful charmer. Now I just need to see Frozen to finish off that category.

Eden: I didn't love it like some people but I'm finally beginning to see what people see in Mia Hansen-Love's movies. Loved the camera work.

Love & Friendship: I liked it a lot, but thought Beckinsale just couldn't pull off the role. Fantastic supporting cast and it made me laugh a lot. More than most of my audience, so take that with whatever grain of salt you like.

The Stanford Prison Experiment: Pretty much what I expected. Chris Sheffield was my favourite, realized I think Keir Gilchrist and Tye Sheridan are the same person.

So, is anyone else shocked that My Name is Doris pulled in almost 15 million dollars? That's almost twice I'll See You in My Dreams or Grandma

June 5, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterArkaan

Pet -- I love that idea

Arkaan -- guess that shows Sally Field's bankability. She has had a lot of hits in her career.

stjean -- if you like Paprika, you should also try to find SUPERCLASICO, in which she has the lead role in a romantic comedy of sorts and the 'dogme 95' classic CELEBRATION (1998) which is amazing all around

June 5, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

She was in CELEBRATION which I loved.. so there's hope!

June 5, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

I saw The Nice Guys and wanted to watch it again right away (but I didn't). My kind of "buddy comedy."

(That is one bizarre juxtaposition of actors in the photo accompanying this post.)

June 5, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Laura Linney and Megan Fox sharing a frame is making my rosacea act up.

June 6, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMojo

I saw wiener-dog and was surprised to find that Todd Solondz was present to introduce the film and do a q&a after as part of a Sundance London event. I then went home and watched Life During Wartime & the remake of Poltergeist...

June 6, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterchoog

I can't believe Paprika Steen is making an appearance on this week's "What Did You See This Weekend"? This is why I love TFE.

I've seen just about everything at the theaters. It's summer. So, I watched stupid Frankie and Annette movies. Muscle Beach Party, Bikini Beach, Beach Blanket Bingo, and Pajama Party (which is sans Frankie). All fluff, no substance. But some highlights:

1. The Panavision Pathecolor used on these movies is just beautiful. It brings the Disney nostalgia. Someone should revive all of that.

2. Pretty extras and bit players.

3. Some of the small jokes have long traction (Tommy Kirk's line "I'm from Mars" followed by Annette's "I'm from Venus," the Sondheim references in BBB).

4. The cameos can be great (e.g., Dorothy Lamour in Pajama Party, Don Rickles when they let him improvise, etc.). But some are really bad (e.g., Buster Keaton 95% of the time).

June 6, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCharlieG

I started off the weekend watching Tab Hunter Confidential via Netflix on Friday night, which is quite the absorbing retrospective of a complex celebrity whose life and work I knew almost nothing about before viewing -- and by golly, he's still as handsome as ever at nearly 90 years old.

X-Men: Apocalypse was my Saturday afternoon feature, and though -- as tom already has pointed out -- it's not as bad as some may say, there's still much that is downright awful about it. Less is more when it comes to these comic-book superhero movies, especially with respect to running time, storylines, and principle characters, and Bryan Singer broke every single rule. Moreover, I found Apocalypse to be so silly and corny as a villain that I couldn't take anything seriously about him or his mission, which brings me to my next issue. I really need antagonists with goals more focused and pointed than ruling or destroying the world because watching the ruination of international landmarks week after week every summer has become extraordinarily extra ordinary. However, I do agree with Ryan T. that McAvoy, Fassbender, and even Lawrence to an extent imbue this film with more than it deserves.

Thankfully, Saturday evening brought us a more interesting offering with Dope, which I kept meaning to catch last year in the theater but missed somehow. I haven't yet formed a concrete opinion on it, though I'm leaning toward favorable. One thing that I did realize is that writer/director Rick Famuyiwa's voice and style have evolved tremendously since his first couple of films, and Zoe Kravitz is absolutely stunning.

June 6, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

I watched The Misfits. For the great cast: Monroe, Gable, Clift, Wallach, and the great Thelma Ritter. Always bittersweet, since most of this cast would soon be gone. Watching Monroe, at a time of great stress, saying lines written for and about her, is almost too much.

June 6, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterrick gould

I wonder if either Primal Fear or Absolute Power were also box office champs? Talk about 90s-style titles.

June 6, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Saw Love and Friendship and was pretty dissatisfied. It's ok I guess, but the whole thing felt so tentative, like the actors had just read their parts about 15 minutes earlier and hadn't had time to form their characters. This is especially sad with Kate Beckinsale, who is clearly out of her depth, the arch witticisms sounded like they were read from a teleprompter, not as though she thought them up herself. Still, Austen's lines are witty, and the snappy pace more or less rescues it. But just.

June 6, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterken s

Arkaan and Nathaniel - The interesting thing is that The Meddler did not do very well at all relative to Doris, Grandma or I'll See You in My Dreams, and Susan Sarandon is probably a bigger star than Lily Tomlin (and definitely a bigger star than Blythe Danner). I wonder if Sarandon's recent political statements hurt its box office.

June 6, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

I rewatched Escape from Tomorrow. It's more disturbing than I remember. If anything, the disjointed Disney setting and CGI transformations makes the gross pedophilia and child abuse elements more palatable the first time around.

June 6, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRobert G

brookesboy, according to Box Office Mojo, Primal Fear spent three consecutive weeks at number one, while Absolute Power debuted at number two.

June 6, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

It's a shame that A Bigger Splash was promoted so poorly! now the film is losing theaters and I doubt that Fox Searchlight will give it a wide release. With a good promotion, it could gross over $10 million, now I doubt that it will reach $5 million like Guadagnino's previous film, I Am Love.

June 6, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJ.

thanks, Troy! I remember both being big hits. Absolute Power is a terrible movie, but I find it endlessly entertaining. Judy Davis really exceeds her daily recommended intake for fiber as she feasts on the art direction.

June 6, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

CharlieG - LOVE Dorothy Lamour's scene in "Pajama Party", almost a high concept distillation of the generation gap jokes that were always turning up in those movies. And Tommy Kirk might as well be a plank of balsa wood, but for the role of a disoriented martian, he's a natural.
