Scarlett Johannson is the grossest actress ever
...as in, the cumilative box office grossings of the films she's starred in!
Josh here to quickly talk earnings. Scarlett's cumulative box office grossings earn her the title of highest grossing actress ever in the USA according to Box Office Mojo. This title is a little misleading as it's not exactly just Scarlett drawing people to all those Marvel movies that she isn't even the lead of (shame!). Along with the Marvel cinematic universe, her massive tally includes her 5 seconds of voice work in The Jungle Book and actual star vehicle Lucy. This puts her ahead of Cameron Diaz, Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett and Julia Roberts (who is the only lady on the list not propped up massively by a mega-franchise).
The top ten and more facts about the cashed up list after the jump
Top Ten Biggest Box Office Earners:
More facts
- Apart from being the highest grossing actress ever, ScarJo is also the youngest in the top 10 by a significant margin
- She's also the highest grossing actor of any gender without an oscar nomination to their name (shame!#2).
- 3 of the top 10 actors are African American
- All have played or voiced the same character in at least 3 movies
- The first actor on the list to have only played a character a max of 2 times is Adam Sandler at #35
- Robin Williams and Philip Seymour Hoffman are the only actors in the top 50 not still alive
- #1 Harrison Ford is ahead of #2 Samuel L. Jackson by only 200 million, and only stole the spot after The Force Awakens.
- Anthony Daniels has the highest gross average ($451.8 mil) on the list having played C-3P0 almost exclusively his whole career.

I completely forgot Morgan Freeman was in the Nolan Bat-trilogy when I saw this list...
Okay, so she'll be, pretty much, #6 or 7 in no time then? As far as her nomination track record, the problem is that, even if you love her as an actress, SHE'S REALLY BAD AT BAITING. So, let's create two lists. Asterisks for work that is bait, exclamation marks for work that, for one reason or another, is anti-bait and nothing beside "Oscar friendly, but not clearly baiting"
Top 10 Performances:
10. Lucy!
9. Captain America: Civil War!
8. The Avengers!
7. The Perfect Score! (Awful movie. If the concept doesn't appeal to you, don't watch it. That having been said? ScarJo has given far worse performances in far better movies.)
6. Captain America: The Winter Soldier!
5. Under the Skin!
4. Lost in Translation
3. The Man Who Wasn't There
2. Ghost World! (This is a stretch, sure, but a lot of it IS still watching teenagers make fun of adult lives.)
1. Her!
Bottom 5 (this is half guessing, but):
5. Vicky Christina Barcelona
4. We Bought a Zoo*
3. The Other Boleyn Girl*
2. The Prestige
1. The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie! (If you want to know why she never tried voice work for a LONG time, just pop this movie in and actually listen to this performance.)
And considering her next three movies are Sing, Ghost in the Shell and, in pre-production, Rock That Body, Lucia "Broad City" Aniello's feature debut about a bachelorette party having to solve the death of a male stripper, I'd say we're at least three Oscar cycles away from work that could plausibly get a nomination.
It means zero to me.
@ Volvagia
You forget Match Point, Girl With a Pearl Earring and Don John, in all of which she is good and clicks off various Oscar boxes...
This is an interesting list, but I'd like to see the list revised if you exclude all the movies where the star was merely a small supporting part or wasn't really a part of the draw of the film.
i.e. Anthony Daniels ranking at no. 15 doesn't signify that he is more of a draw than Matt Damon at no. 20 who got there by headlining most of his films and being the driving force of their marketing.
Yeah this list feels pretty meaningless to me. There's no way to take out franchises (because Ford was no doubt ONE draw of Star Wars TFA, for example, as I'm sure Scarlett was for Avengers) but to have ensemble/voice work in here is a bit odd. An even more interesting list would be the one detailing which actors were entrusted (repeatedly) to carry large budgets and let it sink. Although I feel you may have posted something similar to that and Adam Sandler had a pretty egregious return on the dollar.
Are we sure Gary Oldman doesn't have a spot on that list? Between four Harry Potter films, the Dark Knight trilogy, and his random assortment of box office hits (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Hannibal, Kung Fu Panda 2), I always assumed (slash thought I'd read) that he was high up there.
Scar-Jo 3:16!!!!!
Clearly quantity not quality. Scarlett is pretty minor, based on evidence to date, and it shows how men are hogging all the attention.
Indeed very sad, where are the REAL stars now.
I miss the heyday of Julia Roberts- a true star who didn't need mega blockbuster franchises to elevate her resume.
Are we sure Gary Oldman doesn't have a spot on that list?
If you click on the BOM link, you'll see that Oldman is... #11.
I think the worth of this list is quantified by the following -
Lupita Nyong'o is apparently the 192nd most bankable star of ALL TIME (!!!!)
Yet she still hasn't had a single leading lady vehicle created for her.
Shame on you Hollywood! What nonsense...
Can we please have an 'adjusted for inflation' list created by someone? I can't live in a world where Meryl Streep's 'biggest hit' is Mamma Mia...
Finally - Kathy Bates at No.58 (!!!!!) - GO KATHY!
Titanic aside, just what is dragging up her cumulative figure? I can't think of any franchises that she's been in?
She's been in Sandler movies and Transfomers or was that Mcdormand.
Miguel,i long for the Julia days when a Star was Star..
Finally - Kathy Bates at No.58 (!!!!!) - GO KATHY!

The Blind Side and Midnight in Paris are huge hits.
No. I hate these Top Grossing Actors lists because they insult our intelligence. Love Sam Jackson, but dude has like 100,000 film credits, the only ones that remotely made money were those franchise roles that would have made billions without him. Look at those films HE lead - and the numbers are humbled. Hollywood needs a better formula for these lists - especially in an age of big-budget franchises - where actors are becoming more dispensable. This may be too blunt a tool - but perhaps only count lead roles and NET box office (adjust for budget). Or have a weighted system where lead and supporting and voice have different weights. Whatever - it may not be that serious - but it's still annoying to read these things.
The irony is that the huge grosses come from the very category of movies that simply don't rely on star power to bring ticket sales.
"Indeed very sad, where are the REAL stars now."
At Melissa McCarthy and Jennifer Lawrence's houses.
We know it's meaningless, but nice publicity for ScarJo nonetheless right?
