Cast Sharon Stone in something worthwhile Hollywood.

La La Land. The second trailer got me even more excited about it.

I was in a meeting today with 2 guys (each around 26 years old) - for some reason Kathy Bates' name came up and they didn't know who she was (??!!). But it made me wonder .... 1) Am I living in a self-deluded actressexual bubble? And 2) how many of our Oscar winners are unknown to most people? I mean, I get someone not knowing, say, Brenda Fricker, ... but how do you not know who Kathy Bates is?!

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEllsworth

I finished watching Patton yesterday. I thought I really wouldn't like it but turned out loving it. Has there every been a movie you had to watch that you were sure you would hate but ended up loving?

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTom

I just keep having the same fantasy for the past 9 months:

Therese Belivet and Elis working in the same store in NYC and both chatting in the canteen. Talking about their prospective partners and, without realising it, providing the encouragement to go on.
Ahhh.

But is that just me?

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAdam Lewis

Charlotte Rampling is never far from my mind, darling, but because of Liliana Cavani's confession that Mia Farrow was her first choice for "The Night Porter," I can't help but compare them as actors.

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTyler

@Ellsworth

Unfortunately I think we're in a bubble.

It gets even worse. I was talking to some late 20s the other day (i'm late 30s), and they were totally unaware of KATHLEEN TURNER!

I almost shut the whole conversation down there and then but I proceeded to answer: "She was one of the biggest female box office star of the 80s!"

Their response: "I wasn't born then, how would I know. I don't watch movies made before 1990".

Queue full Rose Byrne in Neighbours 2 mode as I responded: "I was fucking born in 1908 but i know who fucking Bette Davis is!"

Two things I learned that day:

1 - I wouldn't be speaking to them again.
2 - (to misquote Addison De Witt) - "We're a different breed we who love the movies"

I finished Jeffrey Toobin's fantastic book on the Patty Hearst kidnapping and I really hope Kristen Stewart is cast in the lead in the movie, which is being scripted by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who were the head writers on The People vs. OJ.

This may be for the question bin, but who are your top 3 women that AFI should add to their life achievement roster for their life achievement award, based on their groundbreaking contribution to cinema, soon while they are still alive? Mine are Julie Andrews (musical comedy), Diane Keaton (comedy and drama), Jodie Foster (acting and directing).

My sister and I did a dysfunctional sister triple feature last night with Blue Jasmine, Margot at the Wedding, and Rachel Getting Married. All rewatches for me.

Margot at the Wedding really benefited from a rewatch. Nicole is genius. Jennifer and Jason are brilliant.

Unpopular opinion: I think Rosemarie DeWitt is better than Anne Hathaway. I also have trouble placing her in the supporting category. And my goodness, Bill Irwin! The little moment where he says, "I know, sweetheart. Me too," to Rachel. So touching. I know a lot of people are excited about that film overall, and I have joined that enthusiasm in recent years.

I'm seeing Sissy Spacek's Oscar winning role tonight on the big screen! I don't remember it very well, but my mother always compares herself in Sissy in it whenever she's having a meltdown.

I also saw Lo and Behold last night, which was fine, and Little Men the night before, which I LOVED. Hoping to also catch Absolutely Fabulous and Love & Friendship while they're still screening.

Toni Erdmann won the Fipresci Award. All of a sudden I keep reading about this movie. I guess we can call it the Foreign Language front-runner.

Didn't they write Big Eyes too? I am of the opinion that anything political should be offered to Tony Kushner first (Angels in America, Homebody/Kabul, Caroline or Change, Munich and Lincoln, collectively, being the most searching works of American consciousness of my lifetime).

@ Adam and Ellsworth
"The world existed before you and, barring Trump, after you. You only have an excuse for not knowing the latter."

Also, that is some pretty awesome fanfic right there.

@Tom
The amount that I LOATHED The Darjeeling Ltd meant I was fully prepared to hate Moonrise Kingdom. I love that movie pretty openly and agree with the podcasters who thought it came close to a BP nomination (and would be a BP nominee going forward)

Same as V... LA LA LAND. Why does it come out in DECEMBER? I can't wait that long.

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

Also, I'll be going to TIFF this year. I have a 32 film package (twenty + twelve) and I have 80+ films I want to see.

So this should be fun to boondoggle.

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterArkaan

Why can't NetFlix green light an adaptation of Geek Love starring Meryl Streep directed by Paul Thomas Anderson? That would be amazing.

Hello everyone. I'm Jon, I write in the Film Experience comments whenever I can, and now, I thank you very much for Nathaniel have given us the opportunity to talk about what's going on in our film mind.

I am writing in Brazil. I am Brazilian and from the protest that Aquarius film team did in the last Cannes Film Festival, they have been followed boycotts of our interim government.

Aquarius is in our pre-list of nominees for foreign language film Oscar, and they are trying in every way to boycott your application, in addition to its box office and access in Brazil. The first began with the convening of the critic Mark Petrucelli the committee that will choose our representative. Reason? In your Facebook profile, Petruccelli is, since May, repeated personal criticism of Mendonça Filho, and also the protest made by his team against the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff at the last Cannes Film Festival.

"So it was like this: film made with public money goes to Cannes to represent Brazil and does not take any prize. That is, the lie about the alleged coup in the country through phrases on A4 paper on the red carpet did not work very well to expose Brazil to ridicule. "

Last week, we received the news that the Kleber Mendonça Filho film censorship would have 18 years in Brazil. Because of a sex scene. A film with censorship 18 have, unfortunately, a minor decoy exhibition market in Brazil. In theaters, explain.

Kléber came to public claim of such a classification, considered exaggerated by those who saw the film. 'Neon Ox', for example, has much stronger scenes and got the indicative rating of 16.

Well, Anna Muylaert and Gabriel Mascaro (directors 'Mãe só há uma' and 'Boi Neon', respectively) withdrew the candidacy of their films at the Oscar 2016. Anna explained the reason: "We will not participate because you think the year is Aquarius, so there's why. It is the most quoted, at historical in Cannes. I believe Kleber is suffering subtle persecution. Put in commission someone to hate and say it in public, then it is something seemingly biased. And now comes this statement 18 years. They are small retaliation. "

Gabriel also gave his opinion: "It is unfortunate that the Ministry of Culture, through the Audiovisual Secretariat, endorse the selection committee a member who behaved irresponsibly and unprofessional to make statements without presenting evidence against the team the film 'Aquarius', after their protest on the red carpet of Cannes. Aquarius was the only Latin American film in the official competition in Cannes, having been acclaimed by international critics. Given the gravity of the situation and against the creation of precedents of this order, we recorded our discomfort in participating in a selection process of questionable impartiality. "

That's what's going on in my head.

Wow, the Town Crier approach is liberating. Stranger Things touched a friend of mine to the bone. Sorry about Lochte, Brazil!

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTom Ford

Arkaan: The problems with Big Eyes mostly stem (not entirely stem, but mostly stem) from the casting of Christoph Waltz. With another actor, that probably would have been a good movie, even if not equal to Ed Wood or their OJ show.

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Just left THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS. Is there such a thing as being so perfectly cast that it makes the performance a bore because an actor hits all the expected notes or is it just that the actor keeps playing the same kind of roles?

I can see someone who only goes to the movies
Not knowing Kathy Bates ... As she has done primarily TV
For the last few years.

To add to Ellsworth's comments.

Persons who are 26years old may not know
Many Oscar winners. Because many of them who won
Oscars had quite shaky careers afterwards.

@BVR

I know exactly what you mean!

Funnily enough I use them in my weekly spelling test for my Year Four class.

Once we get to the last word in the list I always make up a sentence that uses that catchphrase!

For instance:

If the word is INVITATION the sentence is.

I asked the Queen if I could have an INVITATION to the party but she said...

(and the class yell back)

...GET OUT!

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAdam Lewis

I just got back from the Big Heat/In A Lonely Place double feature at Film Forum and I think I finally "get" Gloria Grahame. I still don't like her Oscar win (that award is Jean Hagen's and always will be), but I don't hate her anymore. And In A Lonely Place is Bogart's best performance. By a MILE.

Also: The only thing that keeps me from watching both La La Land trailers on an infinite loop is the trailer for The Handmaiden. I need both of these films on my eyeballs NOW. I want to BATHE in them. I can't wait for them!

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterdenny

I just watched the wonderfully weird and oh-so-peculiar Wiener-Dog. The stories that bookend the film are definitely the best. I had never seen a Todd Solondz film before this one, other than bits and pieces of Welcome to the Dollhouse on cable when I was a kid, and now I'm really intrigued.

Other than that all I can think about is how close we are to Fall movie season and how much I want to see Barry Jenkins' Moonlight. That trailer is so gorgeously evocative and I'm a huge fan of his previous film, Medicine for Melancholy.

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterthefilmjunkie

Jennifer Beals. Talented.. Intelligent. BFF's with people like Jodie Foster and Denzel Washington. In one of the most iconic movies of all time. Member of the Academy. Easy on the eyes. And yet she does shit TV show after shit TV show. I don't understand it.

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

Would you have given Kathleen Turner Oscar nominations for "Body Heat" or "Romancing the Stone"? Or anything else for that matter.

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterforever1267

Anybody else watch Mr. Robot? Brilliant show, but it has Grace Gummer in it and I cannot stop thinking I am watching her mother. And I keep thinking, I want a young Shelley Duvall in this part, not a young Meryl!!!

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMarsha Mason

I saw Multiple Maniacs the other night and !!! ...I had just watched Marat/Sade and Hell or High Water earlier that day so, needless to say, I had a lot to process.

Hoping to see Howards End for the first time when it's here in NYC next week.

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPatrick T

Just watched Reversal of Fortune for the first time. What a great movie. Weirdly very entertaining. Glenn is amazing as usual. And JEREMY IRONS is brilliant in his Oscar winning performance.

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

I was thinking that because animated films and horror films have been so successful this year, they should consider making an animated horror film. They took a risk on Sausage Party, a raunchy comedy that almost got an NC-17. I don't see why they can't take a risk on an animated horror film. It'd be something innovative and that's what Hollywood needs to be. It should be about taking risks and introducing audiences to newer, more diverse ideas.

I don't want to see Hollywood repeatedly pissing away $100m on remakes, reboots, sequels that we never even asked for.

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMatt St. Clair

@BVR- I just watched that on youtube! That is the funniest moment from an awards show in the last decade.

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTom

Love seeing so many people dying for La La Land. Can't wait!

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered Commentereurocheese

@ Adam

I wouldn't speak to them again either! :)

And I think Addison would have loved Kathleen - fantasy meeting! Can you imagine her dealing with him? Thanks for your hilarious response. Tangent - I wonder if Kathleen ever met Bette in real life? Two of the best. I know she befriended Maggie Smith which seems like a fun pair

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEllsworth

I just celebrated 1,670. Yes, 1,676 Oscar-nominated performances and I now have seen 1,670 of them. The question is what to do with the remaining six. Three are lost and three I just can't find.

Not that it would matter too much. The only thing that matters is that I can pat myself on the back.

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterWilly

Kathy Bates is a character actress. Her name would not be widely known to people who only causally know the names of current and perennial movie stars. Winning an Oscar can be the fulfillment of a personal dream but it ain't job security. Oscar winners matter to Oscar watchers.

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

@ Ellsworth

Good question - I know Kathleen met Lauren. Bette was still very active in the 80s so I imagine they would have.

Have you watched Kathleen's theatre talks on Youtube? I love the one where she's dismissive of Elizabeth Taylor.

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAdam Lewis

We need a Winonaissance after Stranger Things. Would love to see her being cast in a Jane Campion or Ang Lee film

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBlueMoon02

Saw a screening of Complete Unknown last week and watched Midnight Special on the plane last night; Michael Shannon is an extraordinary actor. Damn.

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterchasm301

I know I'll never be a true cinephile though I like even love a lot of good to great arthouse movies, but not all. And then there are enough movies trashed by audience and critics, but I still love them.
Funny enough that a few "classics" now were flops in thier released years.
I'm thankfull for the feeling to be able to really love what I love, even if it's "trash". Sometimes it's even way more fun to love something most people hate. 8)

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSonja

Just realized Justin Timberlake's "Can't Stop A Feeling" is apparently from an animated movie coming out this fall. Is it this year's "Happy" Oscar nominee?

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPeter

Willy! Congratulations! Quite an accomplishment!

We're exactly on the same boat. I am also missing only 3: the two lost films (The Way of All Flesh and the Patriot) and The Barker (1928 with Betty Compson nominated). The UCLA Film Archive restored it but apparently it has not been screened or made available. What is the other film you are missing?

On a different note: I read that the Weinstein Company bought the rights to remake the French film Intouchables and the English-language version will star Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston. There is a very recent Spanish-language remake from Argentina starring Oscar Martinez (of Wild Tales) and Rodrigo de la Serna (of The Motorcycle Diaries) which is quite good.

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMarcos

Sonja, preach! My friends and I were just discussing this. When it comes to movies, good or bad is hardly the point. It's whether they're entertaining or boring. I would much rather watch a bad movie that's fun than a good movie that's deathly dull. I mean, Mommie Dearest could never be called, by the kindest individual, a well-made film. But I'll take that any day over Chariots of Fire. Dear Jesus.

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

"Didn't they write Big Eyes too? I am of the opinion that anything political should be offered to Tony Kushner first (Angels in America, Homebody/Kabul, Caroline or Change, Munich and Lincoln, collectively, being the most searching works of American consciousness of my lifetime)."

Tony Kushner is a great writer, but this is like saying that Jennifer Lawrence or Meryl Streep should be offered all the roles for women in their age groups. Having one man write all of the screenplays for an entire genre of film would not result in a very diverse or interesting cinematic narrative. Was he really the best person to write the screenplays to Selma, Zero Dark Thirty, Fruitvale Station?

Regardless, the reason that Karaszewski and Alexander are adapting the book is because The People vs. OJ was based on Jeffrey Toobin's book The Run of His Life, so they have successfully worked with Toobin and adapted his work.
