The 89th Oscar Nominations Are Here

Oscar night is February 26th, 2017. Here are the nominees along with how I fared on my punditry and some interesting stats. Also Read: "8 Big Takeaways from the Nominations" and "Sad Snubs and Curious Inclusions", "Nominations that made us happy" and "Curious Statistics - Oscar Numbers"

La La Land enters Oscar history with 14 nominations, the most ever

BEST PICTURE:
“Arrival”
“Fences”
“Hacksaw Ridge”
“Hell or High Water”
“Hidden Figures”
“La La Land”
“Manchester by the Sea”
“Lion”
“Moonlight”

How'd I do on my predictions: 9/9 though this wasn't that difficult I will readily admit

History Made: La La Land, with 14 nominations, ties the record of "most nominations ever" with Titanic and All About Eve

BEST ACTOR
Casey Affleck
Andrew Garfield
Ryan Gosling
Viggo Mortensen
Denzel Washington

How'd I do on my predictions: 5/5. This was the expected list, no surprises...

BEST ACTRESS
Isabelle Huppert
Ruth Negga
Natalie Portman
Emma Stone
Meryl Streep

How'd I do on my predictions: 4/5. I had Ruth Negga in the list until the last moment. Argh! Amy Adams, as I suggested in November, had to sit this one out. Let us not discuss my depression over the Bening being left out.

History Made: As with every time Meryl makes a movie, history made. It's her 20th nomination. Soon she will double the nomination counts of her nearest rivals...

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Mahershala Ali
Jeff Bridges
Lucas Hedges
Dev Patel
Michael Shannon

How'd I do on my predictions: 4/5 Hugh Grant missed the list after all... but that's okay as it was a fraudulent campaign -- he was totally a lead, however great he was. I nominated him in lead.

History made: This is the first time since the 1970s I understand when a Golden Globe winner (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) was not nominated in this category.

Stat-Love: Lucas Hedges is the 8th youngest man ever nominated in this category. He's 20 years old. If he wins he'll be the youngest winner ever in the category.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Viola Davis
Naomie Harris
Nicole Kidman
Octavia Spencer
Michelle Williams

How'd I do on my predictions: 5/5. But this was the expected list. It'd be fascinating to know who was sixth.

History Made: Viola Davis is now the most nominated black woman of all time with 3. There are several people tied in second place with 2 nominations

BEST DIRECTOR
Denis Villeneuve
Mel Gibson
Damien Chazelle
Kenneth Lonergan
Barry Jenkins

How'd I do on my predictions: 4/5. The big surprise here was Mel Gibson. We figured, incorrectly that if the more populist DGA didn't nominate him he wouldn't make it with the more elitist Academy. Better luck next time Garth Davis of Lion breakthrough.

Stat-Love: 4/5 of these nominees are first timers in this category. Barry Jenkins is only the 4th black director nominated in the category. None have won.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
“Kubo and the Two Strings”
“Moana”
“My Life as a Zucchini”
“The Red Turtle”
“Zootopia”

How'd I do on my predictions: 5/5. Go me! I am relieved that Finding Dory wasn't nominated. We really don't need the Oscars to honor cash grab sequels when they can be honoring gorgeous films that need the support like The Red Turtle.

Stat-Love: This is getting to be regular, isn't it? 3 American productions, 2 foreign in animated.

ANIMATED SHORT
“Blind Vaysha”
“Borrowed Time”
“Pear Cider and Cigarettes”
“Pearl”
“Piper”

How'd I do on my predictions: 2/5 oops. But I had 2 of these as my alternates ;)

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
“Arrival”
“Fences”
“Hidden Figures”
“Lion”
“Moonlight”

How'd I do on my predictions: 4/5. I assumed Fences would miss for a surging Nocturnal Animals but Oscar didn't like that movie in the way BAFTA and the Globes did.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
“Hell or High Water”
“La La Land”
“The Lobster”
“Manchester by the Sea”
“20th Century Women”

How'd I do on my predictions: 4/5 I thought Captain Fantastic would squeeze out 20th Century Women. I love both movies but I'm so happy 20th Century Women wasn't completely ignored.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
“Arrival”
“La La Land”
“Lion”
“Moonlight”
“Silence”

How'd I do on my predictions: 5/5. Gorgeous movies all.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
“Fire at Sea”
“I Am Not Your Negro”
“Life Animated”
“OJ: Made in America”
“13th”

How'd I do on my predictions: 5/5 WHOA. I am surprised at my success.

BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT
“Extremist”
“4.1 Miles”
“Joe’s Violin”
“Watani My Homeland”
“The White Helmets”

How'd I do on my predictions: 4/5 I missed 4.1 miles

BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT
“Ennemis Interieurs”
“La Femme et le TGV”
“Silent Nights”
“Sing”
“Timecode”

How'd I do on my predictions: 2/5. Oops.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
“A Man Called Ove”
“Land of Mine”
“Tanna”
“The Salesman”
“Toni Erdmann”

How'd I do on my predictions: 5/5 Yay! It's a good thing to considering how we like to be thought of as the top site for this category.

History Made: This is Australia's first nomination in this category with Tanna

BEST FILM EDITING
“Arrival”
“Hacksaw Ridge”
“Hell or High Water”
“La La Land”
“Moonlight”

How'd I do on my predictions: 5/5

History Made: Joi McMillion who edited Moonlight (with Nat Sanders) is the first African-American woman nominated for film editing.

BEST SOUND EDITING
“Arrival”
“Deep Water Horizon”
“Hacksaw Ridge”
“La La Land”
“Sully”

How'd I do on my predictions: 4/5 I missed La La Land and had predicted Deadpool

BEST SOUND MIXING
“Arrival”
“Hacksaw Ridge”
“La La Land”
“Rogue One”
“13 Hours”

How'd I do on my predictions: 3/5 I missed 13 Hours (wtf) and Rogue One and had predicted Sully and Deepwater Horizon just as I had with sound mixing...

Stat-Love: ...but there was a far greater split in these categories this year than usual. They usually line up 4/5 but this year 3/5

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
“Arrival”
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”
“Hail Caesar!”
“La La Land”
“Passengers”

How'd I do on my predictions: 2/5 OUCH. OUCH. OUCH. I only guessed Fantastic Beasts and La La Land. I am horrified that The Handmaiden wasn't nominated but what can you do? It's very tough for foreign language films to break into regular Oscar categories.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
“Jackie”
“La La Land”
“Lion”
“Moonlight”
“Passengers”

How'd I do on my predictions: 1/5. I think this is the worst I've ever done in this category. But it was impossible to predict this year if you believed, as I did  given statistical evidence, that the music branch would never nominate this many first timers. They usually allow only one a year and 4 of these 5 are first time nominees.

History Made: John Williams (The BFG) is nominated in virtually every year in which he's eligible. The last time he missed the lineup was for Far and Away (1992) a quarter century ago! So his omission this year is a shock. Especially since the branch is so averse to new members.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG
Audition
Can’t Stop the Feeling
City of Stars
Empty Chair
How Far I’ll Go

How'd I do on my predictions: 4/5 I missed Can't Stop the Feeling

BEST MAKEUP AND HAIR
“A Man Called Ove”
“Star Trek Beyond”
“Suicide Squad”

How'd I do on my predictions: 1/3. Oops.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN
“Allied”
“Fantastic Beasts”
“Florence Foster Jenkins”
“Jackie”
“La La Land”

How'd I do on my predictions: 3/5. Missed Allied and Fantastic Beasts

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
“Deepwater Horizon”
“Doctor Strange”
“Jungle Book”
“Kubo”
“Rogue One”

How'd I do on my predictions: 4/5. Missed Deepwater Horizon as I thought Arrival love would pull that in despite it not having "Most" Visual Effects

Stat-Love: True to form Doctor Strange continued the tradition of Marvel Studios nabbing only 1 or 2 (in this case 1) nomination even when it looked like there'd be a good shot for multiple nods.

@Peggy Sue.

I have to agree regarding the announcement. It was so stale and awkward. I admire Cheryl Boone Isaacs for trying to progress the Academy and utilize all available current social media trends to make it relevant...but this whole installation was so lifeless.

The only actor I enjoyed hearing speaking was Marcia Gay Harden. That was a delightful story about the maid in the hotel, when she learned of her Oscar nomination. Jennifer Hudson was spazzing and Brie Larson looked bored.

I assume Isaacs wanted to avoid another potential press nightmare if there happened to be another OscarSoWhite controversy.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

... Well, there may be justice in the Academy's world after all : Adams stole Thompson's nomination two years ago, and now it's her turn to be robbed ..... But my heart bleeds anyway...

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterClement_Paris

LA LA LAND will sweep all 14 Oscars!
And the backlash (that's already been building for some time)
will be so punishing!

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterulrich

I tink whoever won NBR best actress is a curse in disguise! Tilda, Emma Thompson & now Amy!! All three were nom at GG, SAG & BAFTA but missed out at the Oscars!!!

I'm happy for Negga, but cant help but tink that had Amy's role been cast as a male (as requested previously when they pitched the idea to a major studio), I'm sure he will nom in best actor for carrying Arrival to such acclaims & multiple noms. But as Amy is a woman & she alr had 5 nods, it's ok to make her wait... I tink her votes is probably super close to Negga's

I'm really sad for Grant...he seldom acts anymore & this might b his last shot at a nom.

I u/stand why pple is hating on Meryl, she really doesn't need this nom, but she is soooooo delightful in FFJ, its hard not to be happy for her, esp after THAT speech.

Meryl is officially the most nom actor at the Oscars (20), GG (30), SAG (12) & BAFTA (15). Her records will be never be surpassed by anyone.............except herself...lol

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

Thrilled for Isabelle Huppert, as with Charlotte Rampling and Emmanuelle Riva she hardly needed a nomination to add luster to her reputation but it's a long overdue recognition particularly with Meryl Streep receiving her 20th. I love Meryl but talk about overkill.

Hated the new presentation of the nominations. Messy and confusing with no sense of buildup. GMA took a BREAK in the middle of them for commercials!! Ugh!

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterjoel6

"The only time she EVER misses is when she has a co-star in the same film who is receiving more acclaim (i.e. Diane Keaton in Marvin's Room and Nicole Kidman in The Hours)."

Er, "Ricki and the Flash" would like a word.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

Aaron - Marcia was great, Glenn was absurd, Hudson totally annoying.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Ruth was EVERWHERE as they were voting. On Vogue's cover, on W kissing Portman, in Palm Springs, screening her film in LA, rocking the red carpet at GG, mentioned lovingly by Streep.

So was Amy... but alas.

January 24, 2017 | Registered CommenterMurtada Elfadl

I think Timothy Hutton was younger than Hedges when he won?

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

Nat, you got 2/5 correct for best original score: la la land and lion

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRicopolo

Jackie deserved a Best Pic nod. But films centered primarily on women so often get shut out from that conversation. A shame - was my favorite movie last year - loved it more than even Moonlight.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRob

Huppert - I was kind of afraid she wouldn't make it. I cannot stop thinking about her performance in Elle. Cannot. Stop. It's such a great performance.

Michael Shannon over Aaron Taylor-Johnson - If you are going to honor the movie, he's the right choice.

Mica Levi - This nomination, which is well deserved, makes up for the Under the Skin snub.

Jeff Bridges - I think it's the best performance he's ever given.

Kubo in Visual Effects - Charlize kinda ruins the movie with her voice work. But the visual effects in that movie are so creative and well-done.

Viggo - I hated the movie. But there's no denying that he's great in it.

Does this mean I have to see Hacksaw Ridge? I'm not sure I can do it.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCharlieG

In my book, Cheryl Boone Isaacs can never do any wrong, for she gave us "Dick Poop," and for that, I will always be grateful.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCharles O

You know, the problem with the thinking on Mel Gibson was the elistist Academy was already busy pushing for Moonlight. When the overall list is already highbrow, these things happen.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

I meant AVA DUVERNAY! Apologies again! Thats what you get for typing furiously into a phone

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBlueMoon02

Neggas performance plays much better than Adams on the small screen I think that's why she got in plenty of passion votes..

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordon

@Jonathan

Good question. I actually think they're the same age. Hedges just turned 20 and Hutton was 20 when we won. It's so rare for young male actors to be nominated by the Academy, and here you have Hedges and Patel (26) in the same category.

Was thinking yesterday how absurd it is that Gosling had to wait 10(!) years for his 2nd nomination when he's given stellar, nomination-worthy work since Half Nelson (Lars and the Real Girl, Blue Valentine, and Drive were all supremely worthy). The Academy just has a bias that way against young men.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

So sad for Bening and the overall low count for 20th Century Women, although i'm THRILLED it's at least in Screenplay, along with The Lobster!

So happy for Negga but sad for Edgerton who I thought was great. I still need to see Garfield and Mortensen but I really wish they had found room for Edgerton.

So happy that Moonlight did as well as it did, especially in categories like score, cinematography and editing.

Wow. I really don't remember the score at all from Passengers. Was it really that good?

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

John Williams technically missed in 2008 for Indiana Jones 4-that's his most recent. But still staggering that he missed-it's so rare.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

@Clement_Paris: Amy did not steal Emma Thompson's spot three yrs ago, it was Meryl. lol.

But I agreed tt Amy is betta in Arrival than American Hustle but so is Meryl in FFJ than August: OC

I dun tink this time its Meryl (again) who took Amy's spot, it shld b Negga & she probably edged out Amy by a v small margin.

Its a shame they can't break tradition & have 6 nominees (assuming Negga & Adams got exactly the same no. of votes)

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

I mourn for the Bening. (And really in a just world both Fanning and Gerwug should have gotten in for supporting but I knew that was never happening.)

Ugh, I don't wanna see Hacksaw Ridge.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterprincesskaraoke

Of all the films released Fences was one of the years best am I supposed to believe that.

Sad for Grant but he was really a lead anyway.

Adams and Bening better not meet next time they are nominated as there's a blood bath waiting there, those Anette tributes were all a bit pointless

So happy ATJ was left off.

Washington had better not win for that awful performance - Viggo to win.

Streep's speech sealed the deal for nom 20,though I thought she'd get the 20th and win a 4th time in the future.

Spencer's going to leap out of her seat when Davis wins.

Don't talk to me about Gibson

Is this Miss Lack of Versatility's to loose

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordon

ISABELLE HUPPERT.

Beyond thrilled. How lucky are we to get to experience the appreciation and discovery of Isabelle Huppert, Charlotte Rampling, Emmanuelle Riva and a second French-language Marion Cotillard performance all getting recognized by the Oscars this decade? May this fabulous trend never end!

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

But we all know Stone is winning now, right? Perfect age and in the film with the most noms and great box office, Portman just won, Streep just won, Negga's nom is the win and Huppert's performance is in a foreign language and the film itself is just too out there.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

Justin Timberlake, Oscar nominee...

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBen

Best Original Score has FIVE first time nominees as LION is a double.

Four of the five nominated documentary shorts have been available for streaming. The only four of the shortlist. Coincidence, I think not?

So where are all the commenters eating crow at Amy Adams missing? I'm not happy or disappointed about it tbh. Happy for Negga, Streep is great but would prefer Bening over her AND Adams, so.

TANNA!!!

Loving that KUBO visual effects nomination.

Two best actress nominations are the sole representative of their film (Negga and Huppert) with Streep nearly making it a third if it weren't for the costume nod of FFJ.

SUICIDE SQUAD - I've said it before and I'll say it again: having an instantly Halloween ready costume in your movie does you wonders.

Wow, the music branch love J Ralph like the actors love Streep. Three nominations for songs with basically the exact same melody!

Yes, PASSENGERS isn't that great, but its two nominations are in categories that are a) obvious duh moments (after GRAVITY and THE MARTIAN, they just really bloody love space ships in production design) and b) not exactly undeserved.

Michael Shannon's two nominations now come with little to no precursor support and for films that were once expected to do much better.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn Dunks

So in the acting categories,
Andrew Garfield is the only first-time nominee in Best Actor.
Hubert and Negga in Best Actress.
Naomie Harris in Best Supporting Actress.
And then the most newcomers are in Supporting Actor with Hedges, Patel, Ali.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSteve

Joy: Ava DuVernay and team, Isabelle Huppert, Viggo, 8 noms for Arrival including Denis!, Kubo for Effects

Sadness: Amy Adams missing for the most deserving performance of her career, the Hacksaw Ridge love, no Matt Ross for Screenplay

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

- Bradford Young is the first black nominee in Cinematography.

He's the second. The first is the DP for Elizabeth (1998).

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Definitely thought that Isabelle Huppert and Emma Stone would one day be nominated together after that weekend in 2010 when I watched Easy A and White Material.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAbel

Well, my few guesses yesterday were wrong, but my season-long predictions of Negga in actress and Lobster for screenplay both came to pass.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCash

@ulrich - I was certain Land of Mine would get nominated just from watching its opening 10 Eastwood-lite minutes all the way back in October 2015. Glad you're happy. I prefer interesting cinema.

Also sad Amy and Bening missed out on a nomination, even if it's hard (impossible) to get angry at Negga or (after that Globes speech) Streep.

I have no trouble getting angry though, at that Gibson nod.

However, I have decided to spend all day today exultant, repeating the phrase "Academy-Award-nominee Isabelle Huppert" in my head on loop.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered Commentergoran

Indeed, Bradford Young is the second black nominee for cinematography (although the first African American).

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn Dunks

Octavia also made history as being the first black actress to get another nomination after winning.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBen

I'm just bummed for Annette Bening. I saw 20th Century Women over the weekend and she was incredible. A screenplay nomination without her seems especially odd (like Happy-Go-Lucky being nominated without Sally Hawkins in 2008).

Also, the Streep nominations have reached the point of absurdity. I know the cheese stands alone, but I honestly don't think she's given a nomination-worthy film performance since Adaptation and The Hours.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterEric

Don't be foolish Internet. The total love for Arrival, 8 nominations, can only mean Adams clashed with herself in Nocturnal Animals. In fact that can only mean the Academy follows her career more closely than people think.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

Lets talk about fraud: VIOLA DAVIS in "Fences" ...

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

With six POC nominated, is this the more diverse oscar in the acting prizes?

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTheBoyFromBrazil

Shocked, SHOCKED i TELL YOU, that Supporting Actor has not one but TWO men under 30 nominated. Ya'll, that never happens.

Massively grossed out that Gibson was invited back to the party. And with THAT.

Hell or High Water is a testament that as long as people like you, you make money and you're the right genre with a bunch of dudes, you can open in the summer and you'll be fine.

I counted TEN female producers nominated in Best Picture, that has to be a record. Matt Damon, Denzel, Pharrell are among the male BP nominees. Dede Gardner's FIFTH nomination in this category since 2011, amazing.

I was wrong about the Portman snub but Adams didn't make it in, which validates me a bit since she clearly missed the #1s needed and people thought she'd be fine still. Wish Meryl had waited on her 20th nod, this film/performance is nothing special but her field was.

Can't believe we're living in a time where a Kenneth Lonergan film has three acting nominations to its name.

Second time in two films that Tom Ford has a male actor giving a sole nominated performance.

The Animated Feature lineup is pretty legit, once again. Love their continual championing of underseen talent. LOVE seeing Kubo score that deserving Visual Effects nod.

4/5 of the Cinematography lineup being newbies is pretty amazing.

Doc Feature is the most incredible it's been in YEARS. Lick it up, this doesn't happen often.

Foreign Language Film could've been much worse. The mediocre Scandinavian film nods could stand to take a break tho, jeez. Australia's first nod!

Passengers?? Lolz.

Mica Levi getting nominated is a freakin' miracle. Love seeing Dustin O'Halloran being recognized as well, after years of solid work.

Justin Timberlake is an Oscar nominee! and LMM! And J. Ralph again, they can't get enough of that guy!

August Wilson has been dead since October 2005 and just now was Oscar nominated. Nuts. That had to be a record of some kind.

Best Original Screenplay is especially fantastic. Good job, writers.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

I am princesskaraoke, and will repeat myself anyway: Bening wuz robbed!

Best lead female performance I saw from 2016 (caveat: haven't seen Florence Foster Jenkins), and perhaps the best of her career.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterlylee

Streep was more locked up with Acadmey voters back in August than people want to admit.
40 years in film. 20 nominations. And without all these best Actress round tables they never invite her to.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

This is another thing that's starting to become regular: Non-Ghibli anime don't get nominated. At this point, I want to set them down: Please. Look beyond Ghibli. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars are better anime than your last couple of lazy Ghibli-wank selections.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Very happy to see Isabelle Huppert's name first in the Best Actress lineup (but sad that Amy Adams and Annette Bening will not be nominated once Huppert's name comes up first). I know that I once said that as long as Huppert gets Oscar-nominated, it would already be a great great year for her after her 'upset' wins in the Golden Globes and the critics' circles. But man, I hope Huppert wins the Oscar!

Happy for Ruth Negga, Andrew Garfield, Lucas Hedges, Mica Levi's score in Jackie, Dustin O'Halloran's score for Lion, Hidden Figures as a best picture nominee, A Man Called Ove in the foreign-language category, Michael Shannon and My LIfe as a Zucchini/Courgette</>.

Sad for the snubs for Lily Gladstone, Joel Edgerton, Greta Gerwig, Ralph Fiennes, Rebecca Hall (I know I know, she never had a chance nor the respect for her wonderful delineation of Chubbuck in Christine), The Handmaiden in production design, The Dressmaker in costume, and Trevante Rhodes.

I won't disparage my least-liked movies and performances that were nominated, Too much negative press out there already.

For now, I hope Huppert gets the Oscar and get in touch with her inner Michele Leblanc-meets-Erika Kohut-meets-Augustine self for her acceptance speech if and when she receives the Oscar from Leo dC.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterOwl

Glad that Mel Gibson and Passangers got no nominations, Gibson is too hated that I did not think it wourl happen and Passanegers had great desing and music but I assumed nobody would notice over the bizarre bad reviews, so great.

I am frustrated about Meryl getting in and Amy missing but I guess there is more goodwill for Amy if she is seen as snubbed do she can actually win one year. I am just always worried that there is not enough female roles and eventually she won't get great ones so I am happy every times she gets a nom.

Otherwise expected and there is still too many films I have not seen, hopefully they get to my country soon.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterChinoiserie

And a personal thanks to the AMPAS for not falling into the Deadpool trap in any way. Bless. ;)

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

WHERE THE HELL IS AMY ADAMS?! #JusticeforAmyAdams
She was my pick for upset win. Damn Negga or Never huh
Ok this at least doesn't make her tie the record with Glenn Close for most noms without a win
This means they might be saving her for the time she will actually win!
YAY Isabelle!!! I am predicting her now cause I can't stand with the possibility of Portman's second oscar or Emma winning for a lightweight performance.
Ok now. It seems that this year they are very driven to at least give one nom to deserving movies, like Hail Caesar, 20th Century Women, and even Nocturnal Animals.
NO DEADPOOL! LOL

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

Amy Adams had the best performance by a female lead I've seen this year (I still haven't seen Negga or Bening, though). The Academy recognizes her talents, but her dialed back, nuanced acting style works against her ultimately. That's why they've stopped nominating her, because they know she just won't win against showier performances from the likes of Stone, and they don't think anyone deserves so many heartbreaks in such a short period of time. Caring people, this Academy.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBruno

I am guessing with the massive La La Land nom count that Stone is pretty much the frontrunner in actress now

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRami

Yeah, gotta add to the chorus of Amy fans. I actually haven't been a fan of ANY of her nominations since Junebug, and she really swept me off with Arrival. It also does add to my miffed feelings about the fact that there's only 1/5 alignment between Best Actress and Best Picture and 4/5 (!) alignment for Best Actor and Best Picture.

January 24, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCaroline

Jonathan -- Tim Hutton was also 20 years old but he was closer to 21 than Hedges is right now
