Writers Guild Nominations

Manuel here bringing you the latest guild awards courtesy of the writers in the industry. As with SAG and DGA, what the writers enjoy and choose worthy of a nomination helps those of us intent on predicting the Oscars see what might be in the running not only for the screenplay categories but also what films are gaining steam enough to see the across-the-board support that nets them a Best Picture citation.

A few caveats, though. Given the Writer's Guild rules, there are a number of high profile screenplays that weren't even in the running for their award and thus their absence should in no way be taken as a slight on their quality or a notch against their potential come Oscar nomination time. As usual, animated fare and foreign language (and foreign-produced) films are the ones least likely to show up here given the eligibility requirements—one must be a member of the WGA in order to be nominated.

Without further ado, find the nominees below with some quick commentary. Scroll further down still if you want to see the TV and New Media categories which were announced back in December.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Arrival, Screenplay by Eric Heisserer; Based on the Story “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang; Paramount Pictures

Deadpool, Written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick; Based on the X-Men Comic Books; Twentieth Century Fox Film

Fences, Screenplay by August Wilson; Based on his Play; Paramount Pictures

Hidden Figures, Screenplay by Allison Schroeder and Theodore Melfi; Based on the Book by Margot Lee Shetterly; Twentieth Century Fox Film

Nocturnal Animals, Screenplay by Tom Ford; Based on the Novel Tony and Susan by Austin Wright; Focus Features

NOT ELIGIBLE HERE SO YOU MIGHT SEE THEM AT OSCARS STILL: Elle*, Finding Dory, The Handmaiden, Krisha, Lion

(Totally Biased) Commentary: Sometimes, these eligibility issues mean that the WGA needs to go further afield with their list but that nomination for Reese & Wernick is just... wow. (Unpopular opinion: Deadpool wasn't that great. But really, the question I know we'll all be asking ourselves come Oscar nomination time is: will we forever be required to type "Oscar nominee Tom Ford" from there on out?

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Hell or High Water, Written by Taylor Sheridan; CBS Films

La La Land, Written by Damien Chazelle; Lionsgate

Loving, Written by Jeff Nichols; Focus Features

Manchester by the Sea, Written by Kenneth Lonergan; Amazon Studios/Roadside Attractions

Moonlight, Written by Barry Jenkins, Story by Tarell McCraney; A24

NOT ELIGIBLE HERE SO YOU MIGHT SEE THEM AT OSCARS STILL: Florence Foster Jenkins, The Lobster, Maggie's Plan*, Miss Sloane, Paterson, Toni Erdmann, Zootopia

(Totally Biased) Commentary: We already know two of these finalists won't make Oscar's shortlist: Jenkins' script for Moonlight and Nichols' for Loving were both deemed (accurately, I'd say) Adapted Screenplays and thus will compete in that category. That means that Chazelle, Lonergan and Sheridan (all Globe nominees) are looking pretty solid going forward. But who will fill out those other two spots? Might we be looking at Disney Animation's first ever screenplay nomination? Can Lanthimos surprise?

*As per a WGA member in our comments, turns out both Elle and Maggie's Plan were eligible. Huppert really can't catch a break with these guilds can she?

DOCUMENTARY SCREENPLAY

Author: The JT LeRoy Story, Written by Jeff Feuerzeig; Amazon Studios

Command and Control, Telescript by Robert Kenner and Eric Schlosser, Story by Brian Pearle and Kim Roberts; Based on the book Command and Control by Eric Schlosser; American Experience Films

Zero Days, Written by Alex Gibney; Magnolia Pictures

OSCAR HAS NO CATEGORY FOR DOCUMENTARY WRITING. Sad!

(Totally Biased) Commentary: Author makes sense here since it's such a writerly script (about a writer no less!) even though I was not quite taken with it. And here, not knowing what was or wasn't eligible makes it hard to ponder what got "snubbed." Either way, this is nothing but good news for Zero Days and Command and Control, both of which are on Oscar's shortlist and going head to head with some mighty competition *coughOJMadeInAmericacough*

People sure seem to hate Nocturnal Animals don't they? Yet it still seems to be swimming in prizes and nominations.

I didn't love it but by no means did I despise it as much as some of the readers here did

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Rather boring choices. "Indignation" should be showing up for Adapted Screenplay and "Hail, Caesar!" for Original. Also, where the heck is "Love & Friendship?"

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

Actually, Elle WAS eligible. And Maggie's Plan was also eligible (in the adapted category). [I'm a WGA member.]

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAlexander

Oh, thanks for the inside info Alexander! Will edit accordingly.

January 4, 2017 | Registered CommenterManuel Betancourt

A shame about Stillman not making the cut in Adapted. Am hoping Lanthimos joins Lonergan and Nichols when the Oscar nominations come out.

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterScottC

The Nocturnal Animals hate here is tired. Just like the Amy Adams hate here is tired. Just like most of the things these inept white dudes seem to trumpet time and time again is tired.

They should stick to movies like La La Land, two tone-deaf white people who can't dance explaining jazz to white people for 2 hours. That seems to be more in their wheelhouse.

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRB

RB, dissing other readers for no reason is tired. Lets have fruitful discussions, shall we?

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTheBoyFromBrazil

I'm kind of LOLing at the idea of August Wilson paying his dues.

I haven't seen, nor do I intend to see, either "Deadpool" or "Nocturnal Animals". But I think it's time to seriously consider them as Oscar darkhorses.

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGuestguestguest

While no masterpieces, Deadpool and Nocturnal Animals are far preferable to those overpraised white elephants Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea. And Loving IS close to being a masterpiece. I'm as happy to see its nomination as I am depressed to not see Jackie's.

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterken s

Nat, I think your last predictions for Adapted Screenplay still hold up (Moonlight, Hidden Figures, Fences, Arrival and Lion). I don't think either Loving, Nocturnal Animals or Deadpool are strong or respected enough to get in. The only film I see sneaking in is Silence, but who knows what's gonna happen with that.

Original is weirder. What's going on with 20th Century Women? Well, Beginners didn't get nominated here elther and that one also looked like a screenplay nominee.

Its also nice to see Transparent nominated, which is great across the board. Im glad awards aren't forgetting about it.

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterLucky

What is up with "Jackie" being missing from most nominations other than Portman? It's so hard to make bio-pics fresh and dangerous. Jackie, Moonlight and Arrival are the three films I can't shake long after seeing and yet one of them keeps getting blanked.

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTom M

Was Jackie eligible?

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Hate to say it, but more and more I think Deadpool may get into the Oscar lineup for screenplay.

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterlylee

RB -- you seem like a nice person.

lylee -- noooooo

Tom -- makes zero sense to me for the reasons you cite. Jackie is marvelous but it would have been pretty standard with lesser filmmaking on all fronts. I'd argue that the film is actually stronger than Portman though she's great, too.

Scott -- is it crazy that i think he will. Lanthimos i mean.

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Deadpool is a worthy nominee if you like your paint-by-numbers Marvel formula infused with crusty memes and embarrassing fourth wall breaking. When are people going to stop drinking their Koolaid?

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDrew

@Drew: Deadpool wasn't made by Marvel Studios.

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSean C.

I'm just rooting for " Hell and High Water "

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

It's really exciting to see Atlanta getting so much love; I've only seen the first few episodes but it is immediately apparent that it is a complete original in tone, characters, and plot. I've successfully been able to hold back from binge watching, since I want to savor it.

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca

I think the only way The Lobster misses a screenplay nomination is if the voters didn't see it.

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCash

I don't think either Loving, Nocturnal Animals or Deadpool are strong or respected enough to get in.

Prepare to be surprised.

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Let us remember that THE HANGOVER was a WGA nominee (and a Globe winner), too. I don't think Oscar is going to take it seriously.

I still think LION has the potential to be surprisingly big with Oscar (pic, dir, screenplay, supporting actor and actress, editing, cinematog, score) or... just a smattering. I'm leaning more on it being a stealth Imitation Game style movie.

But then I'm also wondering if LOVING is like this year's FOXCATCHER, something that appeared too sombre and quiet, but then surprised with some really big nominations.

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn Dunks

Although I haven't seen everything yet, the screenplays that I thought really successful this year included:
Adapted: Hunt for the Wilderpeople
Original: The Nice Guys

January 4, 2017 | Unregistered Commenteradri

Let's hope that Tom Ford will be nominated. His screenplay is obviously one of the best of the year but I'm afraid that LION, FENCES, MOONLIGHT and ARRIVAL have stronger buzz (though both LION and ARRIVAL are mediocre movies with mediocre screenplays) and it might be difficult to win nomination with LOVING and HIDDEN FIGURES (mainly because we had #OscarsSoWhite last year).
If NOCTURNAL ANIMALS isn't nominated we might call the Academy too stupid to know the real film art. But I'm afraid that they ARE too stupid. :(

January 5, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSomeone

NO NO NO STOP WITH THE DEADPOOL LOVE
Good god we could be looking for a best actor nom for Reynolds if this continues

How the hell there's no Veep in episodic comedy? Still Veep FTW in comedy series

Documentary Now! is sheer genius

I frickin LOVE Triumph and that damn dog deserves to win this one.

January 5, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

Deadpool has a solid screenplay. It's something that felt different even though it was the cleanest, most traditionally structured superhero origin film in many years. The novelty of the character and commitment to recurring gags--no matter how silly or vulgar--are what is carrying it to awards nominations.

I doubt it will have enough support for an Oscar nomination, but I would be quite pleased if it did.

Yeah, I loved the film when I saw it on opening weekend. I still love it on repeated viewings.

January 5, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRobert G

Okay, I really liked Deadpool but what is with the critical boner for this movie? Is swearing in a super hero movie really that cool? I'm kind of shocked by all of this.

January 5, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBrittani

Episodic Drama: Except none of those shows really ARE episodic. If you're going to have a distinct category labeled "episodic", it should be a category championing shows that are able to tell a story that has a beginning, middle and end in 42-44 minutes.
Someone: Um...pardon? I just...Here's my joke: You have, in this corner, the merc with the mouth, weighing in at 100 minutes before credits with no wasted lines or hamhanded symbolic moments, Deadp-p-p-pool! And in this corner, a fashion designer's second shot at being a respected writer/director, weighing in at 111 minutes before credits, but with his right hand crippled by an ominous pre-match papercut (seriously, pardon? If that was in the novel, a smart screenwriter would realize how blunt and stupid that would play on screen. And that's WITHOUT ruminating on the sexual politics!), Nocturnal Animals! Who will fight their way to the fifth slot? Will the winner deserve it? Tune in at Sunday at 9:00 on Screenplay Boxing to find out!

January 5, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Deadpool? Seriously? Listen, I am in favor of blockbusters getting recognized. I championed Mad Max getting in last year along with The Martian. But Deadpool?! Ugh. Over Indignation?

Anyhow, I like the inclusion of Hidden Figures and Arrival for Adapted along with Manchester and Moonlight in Original even though that was expected.
