"The Post" on Our Doorstep
Chris here. I was just mentioning the other day that we had yet to see any real goods on Steven Spielberg's The Post, and voila: we just got a new trailer and poster. And the promise of the film being a potential major Oscar player has just gotten a whole lot more intense.
If we thought this one aims to capture the zeitgeist, the first look makes good on that and then some. Gender equality, journalistic integrity, a lying government, etc. The Post seems to hammer all of these in a graceful way to make for what looks to be a richly entertaining drama. There has been steady buzz for this first look online (and not just from movie obsessed folk like us at The Film Experience) since dropping late last night, so we may also have a big box office hit on our hands.
So what Oscar questions might have been answered here? For starters, Streep is definitely a lead performance, landing both top billing and the majority of the trailer's attentions - so the Best Actress race just got definitively more crowded. Giggle at the various hairpieces, but it's worth pencilling this next to other Makeup and Hairstyling hopefuls.
Of course with any reveal, there is also inevitably more questions. In The Post's case, which of these featured supporting male actors could be a contender? Tracy Letts, Bradley Whitford, or Bob Odenkirk perhaps? Might Sarah Paulson's earnestness get her an awaited first nomination or is she more of a crucial bit player? Give us your first impressions and burning questions in the comments!

I saw someone compare this to one of those HBO political movies like "Game Change" or that crap Cranston/LBJ movie and I kinda, hate to, wish I didn't have to agree. I'm very hopeful that its the fault of the trailer and trying to get something out to the public. The music is way overdone and Streep's angst in every frame belies the truth about a ruthless and principled woman who, honestly, saved journalism back in its day. I truly hope she's not a passive character throughout. The poster inspires confidence and maybe when we see an actual clip or two I'll be more confident.
My question is, what is up with Tom's fake gruff, gravely voice? Clear your throat, Tom! This isn't "The Walking Dead," you can talk like a normal man.
@adri - I mean, Bradlee may have been beautiful as a young man, but otherwise I think Tom pretty much embodies smart, charismatic and nice, right?
Also, I didn't get the impression Graham had to have things mansplained to her. This trailer made it look like MEN thought she had to have things mansplained to her.
Thank you Emma!
It's a good enough trailer, selling Hanks + Streep + high stakes political relevancy above all else. Bridge of Spies also had an underwhelming trailer, and turned out to be a masterpiece.
Never, ever underestimate The Beard.

That's what I got too.
Eh, this trailer looks a bit stodgy but isn't dimming my interest in the movie. Still my most anticipated holiday release. I am a little apprehensive Spielberg will go into "I am dealing with a Serious Subject and Must Treat it Seriously" mode, where he's a bit more hit and miss than when he's playing entertainer. I'm in the minority that found "Lincoln" dreadfully dull for that reason, and I didn't care for "War Horse" at all, either. But I really liked "Bridge of Spies," and "Munich," and of course "Schindler's List." So my hopes remain high.
You guys are nuts. This looks so good!
I like it that we live in a world where Meryl Streep has top billing over Tom Hanks.
Meryl also just got the December Vogue cover.
Love the Vogue cover. And the interview with Anna Wintour is amazing! Let the campaign begin.
Also last time she was on the Vogue cover was during The Iron Lady campaign. She was aslso the oldest woman to grace the Vogue cover and it seems she bested her own record by appearing on it again.
Settle down. Meryl hasn't won the Oscar yet. She should be incredible to win a fourth. It's not owed her.
Brooksboy- Did I say Streep was winning the Oscar? I am just hedging bets she will be nominated.
I get the entire 'Spotlight' this-is-a-very-important-subject-matter-vibe.
Should fit well into Hollywood's anti-Trump vibe. That'll be their entire campaign drumbeat.
Think that Meryl will prevail into the top 5 just because it seems like a substantial female role. She gives off a Margaret Thatcher/Iron Lady composure. Doesn't seem like Sarah Paulson does anything large - sure that there's someone in the Best S. Actor Category.
Spielberg will probably get nominated. It's an 'important' topic and didn't 'War Horse' get him nominated?
brookesboy - she's been incredible in performances that didn't win her an Oscar. Plus, Ms. Hepburn was far from incredible in her four Oscar winning performances LOL
