75 days until Oscar nominations...

The upcoming Oscar ceremony is their 90th but guess who's having their 75th birthday this year? Oscar's bad seed step-sister The Golden Globes, that's who! We kid. We love the Globes, bad seed reference aside, in all their adorably flawed glory. What should we do to celebrate the Globes 75th birthday this year?!?

To honor their impending anniversary ceremony, here are 10 random times that the Globes were smarter than Oscar:

  • 2010 The Social Network, Best Picture (The King's Speech won the Oscar)
  • 2005 Brokeback Mountain, Best Picture (Crash won the Oscar)
  • 1996-1999 Their choices for Best Supporting Actor always preferrable to Oscars!
  • 1995 Sense & Sensibility, Best Picture (Braveheart won the Oscar)
  • 1984 Kim Basinger was nominated for The Natural instead of Glenn Close at the Oscars for the same movie (Close is a better actress, sure, but Basinger is way better in The Natural)
  • 1980s They recognized that Cher was a brilliant actress long before Oscar (three nominations and a win even before Moonstruck!)
  • 1967 Edith Evans, Best Actress for The Whisperers (Kate Hepburn won her second of four Oscars for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner)
  • 1962 Angela Lansbury, Best Supporting Actress The Manchurian Candidate (Category frauding Patty Duke took the Oscar for lovely work in The Miracle Worker)
  • 1960 Janet Leigh, Best Supporting Actress Psycho (Shirley Jones won the Oscar for Elmer Gantry)
  • 1959 Marilyn Monroe won the Comedy Best Actress Globe for Some Like It Hot (she was not Oscar nominated)

Can you think of any others?

To me, the most genius GG nomination was Mulholland Dr. for best drama back in 2001. Didn't win, of course. But neither that piece of boredom-by-the-numbers called A Beautiful Mind, which went to win the Oscars later on.

In 2014, the Golden Globes gave Best Picture - Comedy or Musical to The Grand Budapest Hotel over Birdman and Best Director to Richard Linklater over Alejandro Inarritu. Much smarter than the Oscars, which unnecessarily overrewarded Birdman in the top categories (but the Oscars do love their show business films).

Marilyn wld hav gotten that nom had her notoriously difficult n tardy behavior on the set o Some Like It Hot not alienated the entire crew, n in turn, the whole industry.

Billy Wilder n Tony Curtis had passed many scathing comments of her during the promo o the pic + she had a bad rep + she still being viewed as a sex symbol rather than a good actress.

Great idea for a post! My favourite decisions from the film awards body of my country (BAFTA) was Best Pic to Brokeback Mountain over that abomination Trash, and Best Actress to Emmanuelle Riva (legend, RIP) over Jlaw.

BAFTA have become a glorified Oscar prognosticating factory in recent years, but I do regard those decisions with great fondness.

Don't forget Sally Kirkland, the all-time greatest Globe winner! :)

Marilyn and also Nicole won Golden Globe Comedy/Musical - To Die For, 1995 - and no Oscar Nomination, what she deserved.

November 9, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterIngrid_Essex

They've also been much more generous to Tilda Swinton than The Academy has, with nominations for The Deep End & We Need to Talk About Kevin (if I'd had my druthers, would have been for Julia and I am Love, but you can't have everything...).

On the flip side, of course, you have Scent of a Woman winning Best Picture/Drama 1992....

On a totally unrelated note, realistically speaking, do you think there's actually enough time for All the Money in the World to make its 12/22 release date now that they're re-shooting with Plummer? I don't know exactly how large Spacey's role was, but it seems to me that unless we're only talking about a few scenes, that's a wildly optimistic projection.

1977--Diane Keaton (Annie Hall) and Marsha Mason (The Goodbye Girl) tie for Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical Motion Picture

This blows my mind. While I believe Diane deserved her Oscar, Marsha was my No. 2 that year in the lineup. And I love that two brilliant comic roles were honored in this way and at the Oscars when comedy seems to always be the awards bridesmaid.

Katharine Hepburn won her second* oscar for Guess Who's Coming To Dinner.

Josh , regarding All The Money In The World, most reports seem to state that Spacey shot his part over the course of two weeks and that is the same amount of time they have slotted in for Plummer to shoot his scenes.

I think also recognizing Nicole Kidman in To Die For and, let's be honest, Sharon Stone in Casino

November 9, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJon

Sigourney Weaver won twice in one night. Also they nominated Gone Girl and Selma for Best Director.

Josh/Rami

Won't it be sweet if Christopher Plummer manages to sneak in an Oscar nod if it does get released.

November 9, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBJT

Nicole Kidman was nominated for Birth. That is all.

November 9, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

BJT--that would be so lovely.

'02 Best Supporting Actress - Meryl Streep Adaptation
'01 Best Leading Actress - Sissy Spacek, In the Bedroom
'97 Best Supporting Actor - Burt Reynolds, Boogie Nights
'90 Best Supporting Actor - Bruce Davison, Longtime Companion

The Globes were much smarter when they awarded Boyhood Best Picture and Director.

The Oscar losses to Birdman were so disappointing. :(

November 9, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMike

What I love about the Globes is that they get it right almost all the time ( almost, I still haven`t bought the nods for The Tourist), I found it great the Aaron Taylor-Johnson win for NA, They recognized the brilliancy of Nicole Kidman in To Die for, The Paperboy and Birth, Sharon Stone deservedly won over Susan Sarandon for Casino and they nominated her for The Mighty and Basic Instinct. Julia Roberts was nominated for Charlie Wilson`s War, Angelina Jolie for A Mighty Heart, Keira Knightley for Atonement, Jane Horrocks for Little Voice, Winona Ryder won for The Age of Innocence.

Marilyn Monroe was robbed of a few oscar nominations. Still mad at it.

People call her a bad actress.. well F U, you know nothing about acting.

November 9, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBrad

The existence of specific awards for comedies give the Golden Globes an advantage. Some brilliant female performances recognized with awards or nominations are the ones provided by Jamie Lee Curtis in 'A Fish Called Wanda', 'True Lies', and 'Freaky Friday'; Julia-Louis Dreyfus in 'Enough Said'; Greta Gerwig in 'Frances Ha'; Charlize Theron in 'Young Adult'; Amy Adams in 'Enchanted'; Julianne Moore in 'Maps to the Stars'; among many others. I think that I'm not alone when I feel that the Academy Awards tend to overlook brilliant work when it is displayed through comedic vehicles.

Oh, and I forgot the most important part of my comment. One of my favorite Globes was the one given to Sally Hawkins for 'Happy-Go-Lucky'. Great acting, no Oscar nomination.

November 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterLuigi De Angelis

The Globes have always picked better winners and more interesting nominees, here are my top 10 best Globes players:
* DANCER IN THE DARK (2000), Best Actress - Drama (Björk) and Best Original Song
.
* THE ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF A SPOTLESS MIND (2004), Best Picture - Comedy, Best Actor - Comedy (Jim Carrey), Best Actress - Comedy (Kate Winslet), Best Screenplay (Oscar winner)
.
* MATCH POINT (2005), Best Picture - Drama, Best Director (Woody Allen), Best Supporting Actress (Scarlett Johansson) and Best Screenplay
.
* INTO THE WILD (2007), Best Original Score and Best Original Song (great contender in the music races and Emile Hirsch deserved a nom)
.
* VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA (2008), Best Picture - Comedy (winner!!!), Best Actor - Comedy (Javier Bardem), Best Actress - Comedy (Rebecca Hall), Best Supporting Actress (Penelope Cruz) - I would add Johansson for Best Actress and Best Screenplay, but still....
.
* (500) DAYS OF SUMMER (2009), Best Picture - Comedy and Best Actor - Comedy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt)
.
* FRANCES HA (2013), Best Actress - Comedy (Greta Gerwig)
.
* ALL IS LOST (2013), Best Actor - Drama (Robert Redford), Best Original Score
.
* GONE GIRL (2014), Best Director (David Fincher), Best Actress - Drama (Rosamund Pike), Best Screenplay and Best Original Score - and I would just nominate this one for Best Picture - Drama
.
* NOCTURNAL ANIMALS (2016), Best Director (Tom Ford), Best Supporting Actor (Aaron Taylor-Johnson, winner!!! but no Oscar nom) and Best Screenplay

Everyone could wear top hats in honor of Greatest Showman. Appropriate dress for the occasion and probable Musical/Comedy winner.

November 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Marilyn has to be one of the most outrageous snubs in Oscar history... the biggest film icon, one of the best comedic actresses of all time.. zero noms.

Crazy.

To add salt, Thelma Ritter 6 noms zero wins

November 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

I love that Jamie Lee Curtis *won* for TRUE LIES.

From the top of my head, wish I had time to Google:
-Emily Blunt's nom for THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
-THE HANGOVER's shocking win over JULIE & JULIA
-Chris Colfer winning for GLEE right before that show became a shitstorm
