Bask in the Glow of "The Beguiled" Poster

Chris here. Like I'm sure many of you will relate, Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled is among my most anticipated of the Cannes lineup. The festival kicks off this coming Wednesday, but we'll have to wait for these repressed southern ladies until the back half of the festival according to the just released festival schedule. Cry not, readers, because we'll be hearing about Todd Haynes's Wonderstruck right out of the gate.

Also to dry your tears is a brand new poster in all its gauzy glory to knock you sideways - literally:

Some thoughts:

  • How do I get this "Vengeful Bitch" filter on my phone?
  • This Cannes red carpet is going to be off the charts, right? It comes last in Kidman's Cannes foursome, so maybe she'll save the best for last? What bird will she emulate this time?
  • Colin Farrell stuck just out of frame because that's what he gets for taking Kidman's top billing.
  • That blush pink is so smartly used and unexpected. Like the the first trailer, this promises a more twisted take on feminity from Sofia Coppola.
  • But how twisted? The film was just got an R rating for "some sexuality", which is missing a key spoilery detail if you're unacquainted to the original (which: fix that if you are). Maybe Coppola keeps the "vengeance" even more to the imagination...
  • All different directions of gaze from each woman suggesting different motivations, intentions, plotting, etc. while still being a unified force. LOVE.
  • If this sophomore trip to the Cannes main competition should yield Coppola's film a prize, where do you think it could prevail?

There's two honest answers for top billing on this poster format: A: The four mentioned are actually supposed to be viewed as having equal billing or B: The person billed as closest to the vertical top of the poster, which would mean Elle Fanning, not Farrell. If Farrell were actually unarguably "top-billed", everyone supposedly below him would be slightly more to the right of the poster.

wow, SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER galore in that trailer. So glad I watched the original first this weekend before seeing that trailer. Apparently they're going the Robert Zemeckis route with that one.

Oh... me likey!!!!

It'll flop at Cannes, I fear.
None of the trailers bode well.
Everything seem off - the acting - the accents, the images - the setting.
And this is coming from a huge admirer of Sofia Coppola's first 3 movies.
Hated Somewhere and Bling Ring.

But I hope I'm wrong about The Beguiled, and that it's great.

Volvagia - lol I meant the billing in jest, but he does have top billing in the trailer if I recall correctly

Great poster. Would've made it better if there was a hint of skin for Farrell... open shirt, for example. ALAS!

Can't wait to see the film regardless.

The blush pink reminds me of Rosemary's Baby.

It's a melodrama starring a mostly all-female cast...you know it's going to be butchered by the (male) critics!

I can't wait for it though. And beautiful poster!

Maybe this wins best actress for all three like Volver!

Hmmm...could the Academy use this to finally give Kiki her nomination?

Beautiful poster. I hope the movie is not too beautiful. You know, without the smell of putrefaction, sweat and other body fluids of the original.

I don't like it- the image is beautiful but why have the title cover it ?

May 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

I hope for all on this blog that it will be good.
I do not see it doing very well.

Too glossy for such a gory story?

Kiki <3

I hope this does well, but I'm worried.

Aaron -- yup. i learned long ago not to take critics seriously when they discovered female pictures. Otherwise i think paying attention to critics can be helpful. But not with anything feminine or that is widely considered to be feminine even if its gender neutral (like the genre of movie musicals)

I'm so ready! The poster is pretty but I feel like the title is maybe too big? It also kinda reminds me of the one for I Am Love.

I love it but I also agree with Ryan T. that a bit of skin from Farrell would be good. Not just for the eye candy aspect but to subtly highlight his sexuality and masculinity, although I guess the beard is also doing that. Love that he's just barely cropped out of frame, though. Great touch.

All this spoiler talk has gotten me so excited about the surprise ending, when Nicole Kidman finds out she's been dead all along and it's a sequel to The Suicide Virgins!
