Box Office: Cars 3 road blocks Wonder Woman 1... temporarily.

Rule #1 of Hollywood: If it's making money, keep sequelizing it. Yes, even if it's as much of a lemon as Pixar's Cars franchise, basically the sole significant weight dragging down their otherwise blissful quality to quantity ratio (Sigh). But the world keeps buying so they'll keep selling. Cars won't have much time at the top of the charts, though, since another long-in-the-tooth franchise that's a blight on the cinemascape (Transformers) arrives Wednesday with its 5th installment. With so many lackluster sequels out this summer it's no wonder that people have been so thirsty for Wonder Woman, which at least has the benefit of being a "first" in multiple ways. Meanwhile it was a tough opening weekend for Rough Night so I guess this means women AREN'T funny again? (Kidding. But you just know some Hollywood executives are thinking that, because they love to declare women unbankable!)

Nothing in the theater interests me so I have been watching Silicon Valley on HBO. Very funny.
I started to watch Carol but was bored in ten minutes and turned it off.
I wonder if Tom is depressed that The Mummy is such a flop.

The Constant Nymph - Man, this was just awful. Alexis Smith is the sole bright spot.

On cable " Fair Haven" (2016) about young man ( Michael Grant) who returns to his rural home after going through ex- gay conversion therapy.and must deal with his father ( Tom Wopat) and Josh Green his ex boyfriend. A pleasant movie which seems to have been made for a gay Hallmark channel .
At the Sydney Film Festival, I saw CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, THE BEGUILED and WIND RIVER. Outside of that, WONDER WOMAN. So it was a pretty good weekend :)
I've read the CALL ME novel twice (once five years ago and once a few months back to remind me). I admire the novel but don't love it; the film improves on it. It captures summer so beautifully. Hammer, Chalamet and Stuhlbarg are all fantastic but they need to campaign Hammer and Chalamet as leads so Stuhlbarg is not pushed out of Supporting. I loved the film so much and it's really stayed with me. Can't wait to see it again at Christmas when it opens in Australia. I do think it could be a Picture, acting, screenplay Oscar contender. It looks gorgeous (as you'd expect from Guadagnino).
THE BEGUILED is fun - Coppola and the cast do a great job but I think I enjoyed the 1971 version better because it doesn't take itself so seriously. But it was a great film to see with an audience - who laughed in all the right places - and I hope it does well. I'm sure it will be much discussed at TFE in the weeks to come.
I was very taken with WIND RIVER. I was a fan of HELL OR HIGH WATER too and I know Sheridan's style is not for everyone. He is all about the men of course, but Olsen is excellent. I would love to see Renner get a Best Actor nomination. His character is heroic but vulnerable and I would happily watch another film with his character as the lead. If TWC don't stuff it up (a BIG if given their recent track record), I could see it being in the running for Picture and Screenplay nominations (and hopefully actor).
And I loved WONDER WOMAN - I agreed with Nathaniel's Top 10 best moments. Pine was such a good match for Gadot and I love that they were both allowed to be strong and evenly matched characters.
"The Blackcoat's Daughter" - conceptually interesting, but actually watching it is a bit boring at times. I liked the ending, but it's a slow trip getting there.
"Rough Night" - enough good bits to be worth a watch; but with some very long stretches between jokes and an underused cast. Feels trapped by its own premise.
"The Driver" (1978) - Bless the action movie with the wisdom to stop at 91 minutes.
Saw 47 METERS DOWN which was a tense entertaining thriller. Glad it's adding to the resurgence of Mandy Moore into the mainstream.
AFI Docs. Saw Dina ... produced by Vachon ... solid B. Nobody Speak (about the Hulk Hogan/Gawker/Peter Thiel mess) ... solid B. Lots of full-length docs just need 15 minutes trimmed.
Some of the shorts were amazing though - Balloonfest, The Forger, The Foreshore, Goran the Camel Man, Fish Story. Shorts are where it is at!
I saw It Comes at Night and Beatriz at Dinner.
Both films were great with such great casts.
It Comes at Night was not what I was expecting. Much better film then I was anticipating.
I wish Beatriz at Dinner ended differently, but overall it was a great movie, with great acting by everyone.
Loud, stupid sequels (and rehashes) have made me despise the summer movie season, so I've been cuddling up on the sofa with 1980s/90s flicks of my childhood and adolescence which Hulu calls "classics," making me feel much older than I should. This past weekend it was the Clint Eastwood double feature of In the Line of Fire and Absolute Power and the Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle The Sixth Day. None of them are particularly good (The Sixth Day is a real dog), but Fire and Power do get the benefit of material-elevating performances from John Malkovich and Laura Linney, respectively.
Saw Loev, the gay Indian romantic drama that was surprising and interesting and somehow lovely despite a fairly dark even halfway through.
Finished the 2nd season of Master of None which is just great. I just love Dev - so funny and charming and I just love how he gets along (or sometimes doesn't) with people. And the Italy porn in the first couple episodes was just amazing.
And only one more episode left of season 2 of Sense8. So sad to know it's over but I'm enjoying this season, flaws and all.
No box office movies for me this weekend so I watched a few older films. I watched The Sterile Cuckoo for the first time which was good but I thought would have been better.Liza was amazing as usual though. I also re watched Elmer Gantry such a underappreciated film and Shirley Jones has one of my favorite lines in any film with her "rammed the fear of god into me" line. I just think her delivery of that line was so against her wholesome image lol. I also re watched Anatomy Of A Murder and it improved on this viewing for me.
"My Cousin Rachel" which I wanted to like more than I did.
Rachel Weisz was great (what a resume she has!) and the visuals were beautiful.
But I have to agree with what everyone has said about this remake, the previous movie, the novel. It's stymied by having the guy be the narrator, and he is such a bundle of weirdness.
Great movie for talking about, though.
I'm very interested in "Beatriz at Dinner", Salma Hayek deserves a great showpiece and it sounds like this is it.
I was so excited to see Ilana Glazer on the big screen, but it sounds like the movie (Rough Night) is just not very gapped/
@Tom Ford - "Silicon Valley" is great. I especially think Zach Woods is so good as Jared - so understatedly funny with his weird asides and strange, sad facts about his life.
