Charlize Lands Her Punches
by Nathaniel R
W Magazine is going all out with Charlize Theron at the moment. She's on the cover with a new interview, a gorgeous (what else) photoshoot, and there's also a retrospective of her other most compelling photos for the magazine in years pas -- who can forget that photoshoot with Michael Fassbender for Prometheus (*melts from the heat*).
Her new action flick Atomic Blonde has the unenviable task of following Mad Max Fury Road into theaters but thus far word is that it is a bonafide thrill machine as action flicks go. It opens on July 28th so expect Charlize to be everywhere for the next month including right here where we'll be sure to celebrate her career... albeit a little closer to the release.
For now let's revel in this catfighty, rather than catty, anecdote about that time she punched Teri Hatcher in the face in a fight scene in her debut 2 Days in the Valley (1996) when she was just 20 years old:
I hit her really bad....
And because it was Teri Hatcher, who was a star, and I was this bleached-blonde-Amazonian, catsuit-wearing nobody who was punching her in the face, I was like a wild animal. Back then I didn’t know how to hone in my energy and I was knocking over lights. I had no concept of a set. I connected right with Teri Hatcher’s face. I felt terrible about it. I had no money and sent her some cheap beer the next day. Sorry, Teri.

A total Goddess,it's not really a follow up to MM FD she been in 4 other movies since.
Does she discuss raising her son to cross dress in boyhood?
You know damn well that Charlize is throwing SHADES to Teri there. "..., who WAS a star." LMAO yas queen. Sorry indeed.
Meh. I am not into Charlize anymore. Apart from Monster, where she was under a ton of makeup and seemed very attuned to creating a believable character, ever since she keeps serving up the same B movie performance (scowl, snark, punch).
If for nothing else Young Adult gives her a special place in my actress loving heart.
Yeah, total robbery for "Young Adult". Looking forward to "Atomic Blonde".
If I had to, Charlize would be the one to, you know....
Atomic Bomb looks awesome and she was great (with killer line readings to boot) in Young Adult. I have not seen Monster but have seen a ton of her other films. Outside of Young Adult she hasn't really wowed. I LOVED Fury Road but she and Hardy were just OK in that though she looked badass.
Truth be told most other A-list actresses of her fame level are more talented/proven. I'd like her to do more dark comedies.
@3rtful.
What does your comment mean?
Charlize is gorgeous—there are no two ways about it. I was very cool to her at first, but she slowly won me over and now she is a fan fav. Always wished she and Sharon Stone, another cool blond who eventually did the trick, would play mother-daughter in some steamy neo-noir.
I like Charlize as an actress, but I have never been fan of the persona she presents in interviews. She tries too hard to be nonchalant, cool, and a little too casual. It almost veers into disrespectful, insincere, and cringeworthy territory.
Furiosa, motherfuckers!
Was robbed of an Oscar nomination for Young Adult.
She's wonderful in YA and probably came close to a nod in MMFR. And I love that her debut came in a film with Marsha Mason.
I always tell myself that she was nominated for "Young Adult" and it helps me sleep at night.
I don't think her comment about "Teri, who was a star" ... is shade. At the time, Teri Hatcher was the most downloaded woman on the Internet courtesy of Lois & Clark, and would have her own surprising award-winning comeback 10 years later.
Justice for Charlize in Young Adult, Kirsten Dunst in Melancholia, and Kristen Wiig in Bridesmaids -- the worthy but neglected contenders of that awards season. Not a great best actress roster that year.
