'The Shape of' the Critics Choice Winners List

by Nathaniel R

The Critics Choice Movie and Television Awards voted on by the BFCA members were held last night in California with Olivia Munn hosting. Aside from the color of the dresses and the Best Picture winner (Shape of Water) the night was faithful to the template set by the Golden Globes on Sunday in terms of the winners list and the political slant. Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot,  even got to make a speech with a special award (now that they've axed the acting in action film prizes).

In the night's most predictable turn of events, James Franco was a no-show (despite winning Comedy Actor again) after this past week of sexual misconduct claims. In the night's most upsetting development Lady Bird was entirely shut out of the winner's circle. In the night's "Biggest Waste of a Prize" moment, for some reason the group chose Three Billboards for Best Ensemble despite awarding McDormand and Rockwell trophies. (Aside from Woody Harrelson does anyone else in the cast demand a kind of "well, we gotta give this an ensemble prize, too!" enthusiasm? Especially when they had Mudbound, The Post, Dunkirk and Lady Bird right there as the other options!). Winners and a few more comments are after the jump...

MOVIES

The new Oscar frontrunner?

BEST PICTURE  The Shape of Water
BEST ACTOR Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
BEST ACTRESS  Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS  Allison Janney, I, Tonya
BEST DIRECTOR  Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water

These look like your Oscar frontrunners in the big six categories post Globes. While The Shape of Water lost the Globe for Picture to Three Billboards, it's a far less divisive film and as we've learned the last few years, divisive doesn't help you win the big trophy with the preferential system now that the Best Picture voting is not a simple "most votes win" with the Academy.

BEST YOUNG ACTOR/ACTRESS  Brooklynn Prince, The Florida Project
BEST ACTING ENSEMBLE Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE  Coco
BEST ACTION MOVIE Wonder Woman
BEST COMEDY  The Big Sick
BEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY James Franco, The Disaster Artist
BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY Margot Robbie, I, Tonya

Margot Robbie beat out both Tiffany Haddish and Saoirse Ronan for that comedy prize so I Tonya continues to rise in awards power. I'm now expecting a Best Picture nomination as much as it pains me to say it.

BEST SCI-FI OR HORROR MOVIE  Get Out
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM In the Fade
BEST SONG Remember Me from Coco
BEST SCORE Alexandre Desplat, The Shape of Water
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Jordan Peele, Get Out

With different winners for Song and Screenplay than the Globes landed on perhaps we have a legitimate race for the Oscar in those categories? I'll freely admit it: though I heard other people suggest that Diane Kruger's performance alone would be enough to power a big campaign despite an initial lack of prizes for the movie itself, I did not expect In the Fade to emerge as the Oscar frontrunner for Best Foreign Film but perhaps it now has with back to back wins at the Globes and the Critics Choice? Pity that it's still not in theaters!

Ewan and Nicole again won prizes on the same night. When are they going to get a new photo op together?

BEST TALK SHOW Jimmy Kimmel Live!
BEST ANIMATED SERIES  Rick and Morty
BEST UNSTRUCTURED REALITY SERIES Born This Way
BEST STRUCTURED REALITY SERIES  Shark Tank
BEST REALITY COMPETITION SERIES The Voice

I had more things to say 5 days ago, but...

Are Nicole and Ewan not on good terms? No photo-ops at the Globes and the Critics Choice. And her VERY awkward way of referencing him as "the previous winner" when he won right before was eyebrow raising. Could be nothing, but...

Also I would've liked the ceremony more with WAY less skits and more showing the actual awards. No Screenplay? Or how about Young Actor where Brooklynn Prince apparently delivered a humdinger of a speech.
