Golden Globe Winners. What does it mean for Oscar?

by Nathaniel R

Sally, Frances, and Martin on Globes nightWe'll dig into the ceremony and key details soon but for now a complete winners list with Oscar aftermath thoughts...

Motion Picture Drama
Call Me By Your Name
Dunkirk
The Post
Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri ★

I predicted The Post. As did Seth Myers in a way with a rather hilarious opening monologue joke about bringing all the trophies out as soon as he said the title -- a joke that Spielberg & company had a big laugh about. Whooops. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri was already looking strong going into the Oscar nominations but basically owned Globes night so it might be the film to beat.

Best Picture (in terms of a win) still feels up in the air though, doesn't it?

Motion Picture Comedy/Musical
The Disaster Artist
Get Out
The Greatest Showman
I Tonya
Lady Bird ★

I predicted I Tonya ... mostly out of fear since it was my least favorite in the category but Lady Bird's win was delicious for being not expected (by me at least). Still there was something rushed and after-thoughty about its win (coming so late in the evening when the show was running so far over time and it had missed two key prizes (Screenplay and Supporting Actress) and that's really too bad because in the night of "Times up!" something celebratory -- like such a warm loving female-centric film being honored, should have felt more jubilant... but the dominant title (in terms of capturing the spirit of the evening) was neither of the movies that won but Big Little Lies.

I still fear that Greta Gerwig will miss out on the Director nomination (that she also missed at the Globes). Talk me down!

Comedy/Musical Actress
Judi Dench, Victoria & Abdul
Helen Mirren, The Leisure Seeker
Margot Robbie, I Tonya
Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird ★
Emma Stone, Battle of the Sexes

Ronan's American accent is so good that it can still be such a shock to hear her in full lovely Irish voice. I still fear that she could be the last minute shock snub if they want to make room for Jessica Chastain in Molly's Game or Judi Dench in Victoria and Abdul. It may seem insane to fear that but we're talking about a young woman who makes complicated performances look effortless and Effortlessness can be anathema for awards voters.

Talk me down!

Comedy/Musical Actor
Steve Carell, Battle of the Sexes
Ansel Elgort, Baby Driver
James Franco, Disaster Artist ★
Hugh Jackman, The Greatest Showman
Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out

One of the night's more memorable wins, due to the gimmicky nature of the film -- Franco even doing his Wiseau mimicry in his speech -- and for Tommy Wiseau joining him on stage (though not permitted to speak!). Was it just me or did Kaluuya not seem too happy to be there last night? He was doing that Tommy Lee Jones or Frances McDormand thing whenever the camera caught him like "Why must I endure this?"... (though strangely Frances herself was not doing the Frances thing and seemed mostly delighted the whole evening).

Is Franco in for an Oscar nomination despite a field that looks pretty even between about 7 men? Last night seemed to indicate yes. Plus as is evident from all the celebrity cameos in the movie, Franco has a lot of friends in Hollywood.

Drama Actress
Jessica Chastain, Molly's Game
Sally Hawkins, Shape of Water
Frances McDormand, Three Billboards ★
Meryl Streep, The Post
Michelle Williams, All the Money in the World

What a nail-biter category it was going into the evening but it soon became clear that Three Billboards had the heat necessary to melt the Globes resistance to the non-schmoozy Frances McDormand. The applause made me believe again that she could (but is not locked for) win Oscar #2 in March.

In a curious push-and-pull reminding us that Frances McDormand is never "easy" she wore navy blue while everyone else was in black, then stated that she was keeping her politics private but then voiced support for the evening's prevailing 'times up!' theme.

Drama Actor
Timothée Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name
Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread
Tom Hanks, The Post
Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour ★
Denzel Washington, Roman Israel, Esq

A lot of people were hoping for a Chalamet win but, as predicted, it was Oldman. Though Hollywood may well be moving into a new era, old habits die hard and the patriarchy affects us all which means that storied older male actors who have paid their dues are still the ones to beat for prizes while youth is only "prize-worthy" with the women.

Still the room seemed pretty subdued about this win, didn't it? Perhaps Oldman might not be a slam dunk for the Oscar.

Supporting Actress
Mary J Blige, Mudbound
Hong Chau, Downsizing
Allison Janney, I Tonya ★
Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water

As I've been predicting Janney upset the Metcalf train. Metcalf would triple crown if she wins the Oscar but Janney won't as she doesn't yet have a Tony Award.

Supporting Actor
Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project
Armie Hammer, Call Me By Your Name
Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water
Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World
Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards ★

Argh! Knew I should've changed my prediction from Dafoe when the Globes didnt go for The Florida Project in any category but this one.

We officially have a race for the Oscar between the two of them.

Director
Guillermo del Toro, Shape of Water ★
Martin McDonagh, Three Billboards
Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk
Ridley Scott, All the Money in the World
Steven Spielberg, The Post

I suspect a repeat at the Oscars. Though Best Picture still feels a bit up for grabs. You?

Screenplay
Shape of Water
Lady Bird
The Post
Three Billboards ★
Molly’s Game

They don't differentiate between Adapted or Original though this field was largely devoted to the Original Screenplays. I suspect McDonagh wins the eventual Oscar as well, though I'm rooting for Peele (not nominated here) or Gerwig (Lady Bird) to take it. It would be the second Oscar for McDonagh who won the short live action category for Six Shooter  twelve years ago.

Score
Carter Burwell, Three Billboards
Alexandre Desplat, The Shape of Water
Jonny Greenwood, Phantom Thread
John Williams, The Post
Hans Zimmer, Dunkirk

Another correct prediction and another win that feels like it'll repeat on Oscar night.

Song
"Remember Me" Coco
"Home" Ferdinand
"This is Me" The Greatest Showman
"Mighty River" Mudbound
"The Star" The Star

Second consecutive Globe for Pasek & Paul. Do they go two-for-two at the Oscars or will another song rise?

Foreign Language
In the Fade (Germany) ★
First they Killed My Father (Cambodia)
Loveless (Russia)
A Fantastic Woman (Chile)
The Square (Sweden)

Sweet of Fatih Akin to make the win about Diane Kruger's performance -- which, well, it probably was. Can the film also win the Oscar in this category? It'll have to get nominated first but if so, it has a clear shot at a win.

Animated Film
Boss Baby
The Breadwinner
Coco ★
Ferdinand
Loving Vincent

An easy get on Oscar night, too? Probably. Funny how some years are so damn competitive and others feel like long coronations for the obvious.

TELEVISION WINNERS

Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls and Bunheads) is finally a winner via THE MARVELOUS MRS MAISEL

Comedy Series
black•ish
Marvous Mrs Maisel ★
Master of None
SMILF
Wil & Grace

Golden Globes love their shiny new female-centric series and always kinda have.

Actress Comedy Series
Pamela Adlon, Better Things
Alison Brie, GLOW
Rachel Brosnahan, Marvelous Mrs Maisel ★
Issa Rae, Insecure
Frankie Shaw, SMILF

She really is marvelous on the show.

Actor Comedy Series
Anthony Anderson, black•ish
Aziz Ansari, Master of None ★
Kevin Bacon, I Love Dick
William H Macy, Shameless
Eric McCormack, Will & Grace

In which we learned that Aziz Ansari reads online awards show predictions since he thought he was going to lose.

Drama Series
The Crown
The Handmaid's Tale ★
Game of Thrones
Stranger Things
This Is Us

Actress Drama Series
Caitronia Balfe, Outlander
Claire Foy, The Crown
Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Deuce
Katherine Langford, 13 Reasons Why
Elisabeth Moss, The Handmaid's Tale ★

Actor Drama Series
Sterling K Brown, This is Us ★
Freddie Highmore, The Good Doctor
Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul
Liev Schreiber, Ray Donovan
Jason Bateman, Ozark

Limited Series
Big Little Lies ★
Feud: Bette and Joan
Fargo
Top of the Lake: China Girl
The Sinner

The night obviously belonged to this great mini-series which is now just a regular series.

Actress Limited Series
Jessica Biel, The Sinner
Nicole Kidman, Big Little Lies ★
Jessica Lange, Feud: Bette and Joan
Susan Sarandon, Feud: Bette and Joan
Reese Witherspoon, Big Little Lies

Actor Limited Series
Robert De Niro, Wizard of Lies
Jude Law, The Young Pope
Kyle Maclachlan, Twin Peaks
Ewan McGregor, Fargo ★
Geoffrey Rush, Genius

Was this a surprise? I somehow never clocked that this competition was happening at all so low was the buzz for this particular category.

Supporting Actress, Series of any kind
Laura Dern, Big Little Lies ★
Ann Dowd, The Handmaid's Tale
Chrissy Metz, This is Us
Michelle Pfeiffer, The Wizard of Lies
Shailene Woodley, Big Little Lies

Supporting Actor, Series of any kind
David Harbour, Stranger Things
Alfred Molina, Feud: Bette and Joan
Alexander Skarsgard, Big Little Lies ★
Christian Slater, Mr Robot
David Thewlis, Fargo

The Globes were heavy on the repeats of Emmy winners which is not always the case.

How well did you do on your predictions?

Nathaniel, I get your worrying about Saoirse potentially missing out on a nod, but I think despite the fact that Molly’s Game had a good showing at the guilds this week, it had to late of a release for Jess to gain any traction with voters. Also, I’m not entirely sure people even remember Victoria & Abdul was a film that came out this year. I’m not entirely sure and I saw it, in theatres. I worry whether or not Robbie is the one we’ve been overestimating.

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterRCL1997

Nathaniel, I have been worried about Ronan all season. Why does she feel like Amy Adams in Arrival to me? God I hope I am worried for nothing!

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMichael R

i could easily see a robbie snub, but ronan i'm pretty sure is in and may indeed win. i think that if lady bird receives 6+ noms including best director ronan will likely win the award. i could imagine a situation in which the academy doesn't care for i tonya and janney is the sole nominee from the film. i don't think it's likely, but it's entirely possible.

i am also not convinced that streep and hanks will be nominated, but we'll see.

Daniel Kaluuya's attitude is not good for his Oscar campaign. Yeah, I know "Get Out" is very popular and he has been doing good during interviews and magazines, but that lack of celebrity shine (and he's such a "young actor") might hurt his Oscar chances. Plus, like you said above, "Get Out" went to comedy to avoid Globes snub and it ended going home empty handed.
Will Tom Hanks or Gyllenhaal take Kaluuya's place in Best Actor nominees shortlist coming Oscar nominations morning?
.
I would bet Gyllenhaal will happen. He portrays a real-life character and a disabled one! Plus, he's campaigning (I know both Globes and SAG snubed him, but it can happen)

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterEd

I'm also tired of the fact that awards go to "mimicry" performances almost by default, but Oldman is much better in "Darkest Hour" than many of you are giving credit for.

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterRob

I highly doubt Ronan will miss a nom, and I'm almost equally sure she won't win. It's likely going to either McDormand or Hawkins, and it might come down to how much they love each of their respective films.

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterBruno

I agree with so many of the prior comments... especially Huh and Movieman.

I will add my 2 cents in , also.

I cannot look at Dunkirk and # Billboards and see the latter as a Best Pic.... it is not even made all that well.

I think the nominees for Beat Actress will be: McDormand, Ronan, Streep. Robbie and Sally
Hawkins. ( the only alternate would be Chastain. )

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered Commentergrrr

I don't know what "attitude" Daniel Kaluuya had last night. He acted perfectly fine to me. Maybe he was just overwhelmed by the proceedings? Or he knew the writing in the wall early in that night that "Get Out" would go 0/2? He didn't owe the good and kind white folks in the audience and/or at home a shuck-and-jive show, massa. That might just be his normal, low-key British personality at work. He's squarely in the Oscars final five, and let's not forget his huge NSFC win that went unnoticed on here.

Also, Oprah's speech wasn't 20 minutes or even 15 minutes. She spoke under 10 minutes, which is perfectly reasonable for a DeMille speech. Reese's introduction might have added three minutes or so with the montage. One of Oprah's best shining moments EVER!

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterDorian

Gotta love Oprah's speech; she sounded and looked sensational, as did Saoirse.

Natalie's epic call-out is just that: a well-played call-out to the H.F.P.A. *and* the nominated directors, all of whom are members of the D.G.A. and, presumably, A.M.P.A.S. as well. These men actually *do* have the power (albeit not total) to influence the directors' branch to recognize at least *one* female director (Greta Gerwig, Dee Rees, etc.) with a well-deserved nomination this year. So, as much as Del Toro charmed the room, I disagree that he, Spielberg, Scott, Nolan, among the most powerful men in Hollywood, *don't* deserve a momentary, sobering serving of embarrassment, which Natalie dished out ice-cold. Who wants an #OscarsSoMale backlash anyway?

Random factoid: Gary Oldman was married to (and has a son with) Lesley Manville. Who knew!

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

I know we're all speculating and that's quite fine, but I think we really need to see who gets the SAG awards... and then who gets Oscar nominated! In nay case, I will do the same thing we're all doing!
Do you think that voters who are torn between Ronan and McDormand might think "Well, I'll vote for Ronan next year with On Chesil Beach. Now I'll just go for McDormand"? I hope not, but anyway, I can't think of a case in the past where this might have happened.

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMarcos

People arguing over Daniel Kaluuya's attitude need to stop policing black men's behaviors. Plenty of the old white farts in the room never crack a smile.

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered Commenterbeyaccount

In what's firmly the year of the women, I do wonder whether the Academy might accidentally shoot equality in the foot with an unintended, unanticipated repeat of OscarsSoWhite in the acting categories.

Kaluuya feels like he's on a knife-edge for that fifth spot, and could easily miss out to someone like Hanks.

In which case we are probably reliant on Supporting Actress to show some diversity, and the two frontrunners are white. I would be astonished if none of Blige, Chau, Spencer and Haddish (especially after THAT speech right the moment whilst ballots are being filled out) made the cut, but with Hunter, Manville and Scott Thomas all very conceivable... I just wonder. When the frontrunners are getting the lion's share of the number 1 votes, anything can happen.

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterRobUK

Yeah, I'm not sure what attitude people are attributing to Daniel Kaluuya. It's a little uncomfortable to say that he should smile more. That is always so condescending to women and people of color. Perhaps he doesn't know the camera is on him and he's not there to perform.

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterRaul

I hope Allison Janney wins the Oscar. This just puts her over the edge.
LOVE the deserving wins for Big Little Lies and Nicole!

Ugh that Israeli Portman comment is so unnecessary. Not everything needs to be about her. And Time is also Up for your abuse in Palestine. It's not the directors' fault to be nominated. Thank god Guillermo is a graceful winner.

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

Washington looked angry all evening, what's with him?

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

My 2 cents:

Actress - so happy for Ronan!!😁 I found her short speech charming n genuine n Nat, dun worry, she will def b nom. The one who is vulnerable here is actually Meryl, looking at how The Post was snubbed goin in w 6 noms n she won NBR which is wat Amy had won the prev yr. If voters take to Molly Game's, Chastain will likely take the last spot.

Actor - is Get Out really happening?? If so, Kaluuya will likely get in. Else, the Academy wld wanna make up to Hanks or maybe even Gyllenhaal for the past snubs.

Supp Actor/Actress - Janney/Rockwell may hav won for their more flashier roles, but I still tink Metcalf/Dafoe will prevail at SAG n Oscars.

Director - at this pt, I tink Gerwig is a safer bet than Peele n maybe even Spielberg! McDonagh looks like he gettin in oso w the luv tt Three billboards is getting.

All said, the DGA n SAG will provide us e clearer insights in a few wk time, esp SAG.. Whoever won them more or less hav the Oscars in their bags.

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

I can't believe that Gary Oldman won.
Has Hollywood forgot what a right wing nut-bar he is?
Remember, this is the guy who called Nancy Pelose a "fucking useless cunt", and this is the guy who choked and smashed a telephone on his ex-wife's face. And finally, this is the guy who, a few years ago, called the Golden Globes "a meaningless event"! I guess it's only meaningless when they don't nominate you, right Gary? And, yet, here he is proudly holding one. Sick! Not to mention that Timothy Chalamet was robbed.

i'm looking forward to seeing what frances mcdormand picks out of the laundry basket on oscar day

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered Commenterpar

Ed, your comment re Gyllenhaal makes me wonder if he'll be the Bradley Cooper/AMERICAN SNIPER of this year.

January 9, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterJakey

Frances is winning that Oscar. I'm convinced now.

Seriously. This is the zeitgeist performance of the moment. A middle-aged woman seeking justice for the death of her daughter who was raped and murdered? Against a chauvinistic and careless police force who devalues the lives of young girls? Engrave her name already.

January 9, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

Yeah I think McDormand may be more of a lock than Oldman for the win.

January 9, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

May be late to the party, but this thought just crossed my mind. With the winners, every best actress win correlated with the winning film/series. Nicole Kidman/Big Little lies - Rachel/Marvelous- Elisabeth Moss/Handmaid’s Tale - Saoirse/Lady Bird - Frances/Three billboards. Just found that interesting. If Laurie Metcalf had won, the supporting categories could have been included (since Laura Dern won).
