And finally the teaser to Aladdin...
About which we have not much to say since it's very much a tease in which we glimpse Aladdin himself (Mena Massoud) only at the tail end for a second as he reaches for the lamp, this 'diamond in the rough'... otherwise it very much looks like an animated movie with CG environments and growly cartoon narration. Aladdin opens May 24th, 2019 to challenge Beauty & the Beast's box office crown in the unique subgenre of 'nearly shot for shot live action remakes of animated musical classic for nostalgia's sake'.

I love Gail, too.
Brie signed a seven picture deal for $35M? I hope she is allowed to act. Someone (Sasha) said the last era of several Titan movie actresses at once was the Streep-Lange-Winger etc. era in the 80's and that's so true. After Jodie, Michelle, Meg, Julia (now coming back) in the 90's, they have gone down in number every decade. Streep still timeless. Now they are fighting over action parts. And where is Jennifer Lawrence's next job? Tick tock.
Scar-Jo 3:16 getting $15 million! OH HELL YEAH!!!!
I'm with John Carpenter on this remake of Big Trouble in Little China. He needs to lay the smackdown on the Crock and give the Crock exactly what he's been wanting. He's been talking about it for years and likes to do it to other people which is to take some object, shine it up real nice, turn that sum-bitch sideways, and stick it straight up his roody-poo candy-ass!!!!!!
We had Jolie Diaz Bullock in the 00's and Lawrence Stewart McCarthy now.
ScarJo, Johnny Depp, and Willam: what a trio!
mark -except Stewart isn't a box office draw. I think it's only Lawrence & McCarthy now with a bunch of almost there but less consistent draws like Stone & Johansson & Hathaway & Streep (still)... and maybe after Widows we can start having Viola Davis there which would be awesome.
Nat I think Viola will get there,I think she's a draw for a lot of demographics,i'd also add Sandra Bullock to the list.
Chris Pratt would have been a better choice to star in a remake of "Big Trouble in Little China"
But why is Aladdin wearing a shirt under his vest? UGH.
RE: Johnny Depp
I'm more annoyed her married another woman other than his longtime partner and mother of his children. That was the first sign of his trashiness.
I never imagined that Streep and Cruise would be the most enduring box office stars. Their runs cover decades.
Isn’t part of why Jennifer left CAA is that no one will pay her $15M fee? I do think things are worse now for the ladies. None of them seem to get interesting roles to do good work.
PS, I think Sasha meant Titan as in actresses had their own production companies, or were so recognized for talent that studios built movies around them (like Streep, who was to me similar to Bette Davis). Ever since, lead actresses have gotten younger and less powerful, with rare exceptions. They also have a shorter shelf life. It’s hard to imagine a ten year run by a Julia Roberts, etc. I blame comic book films and cartoons.
HW - I'm not sure if that was a rhetorical question, but Lawrence is playing Elizabeth Holmes in Adam McKay's adaptation of Bad Blood. The book is sensational and it is great part.
I found that piece of Sasha's, like everything she writes, beholden to her unhappy whims of the given year. There have always been very young Best Actress winners (Janet Gaynor, the first ever winner, was 22), and in the past decade, we have had two of the oldest Best Actress winners in Streep and McDormand, both of whom are "titans." One could argue that Lawrence and Blanchett are, too, as is Moore, in her own way; Portman and Stone are probably on their way there.
I don't think Bad Blood has a script or start date.
RE: the First Man AD article.
The problem with Sasha Stone and most Oscar pundits (yourself and a few others excused, Nathaniel) is that they seem to unironically and earnestly heap mega praise on the 'chosen Oscar films' every year. And every year, this makes me think as far as film goes, they don't know what they're talking about.
We knew early on in the year that A Star is Born and First Man were going to be Oscar contenders, and yet like clockwork Sasha and these other guys and girls proclaim them THE VERY BEST thing they've seen all year! And it's only ever Oscar contenders that make the cut. Those two films are good films. But the very best?
Has Sasha even seen Leave No Trace, The Rider, First Reformed, Eighth Grade, Private Life, You Were Never Really Here, etc?
I hope Wong Kar-wai will give us a new movie soon!
The 00's were Bullock, Witherspoon, Jolie, Diaz, Kidman, Zellweger. At least that's how I remember it.
Yep, and only a few are still in the movie biz.
I peruse Awards Daily every once in a while, but evangelina, I agree with you.
Sasha's writing irks the hell out of me. She's always writing in such grand terms about everything. So dramatic, always, about everything. Chill out and eat a cookie, girl. lol.
/3rtful - How Boujie of you.
I agree that Nathaniel is the best of Oscar pundits, because he always has room for another great performance. He expands the field, welcoming all kinds of eclectic and interesting performances, rather than reducing it to predictions that are “right”.
That’s why I’m always willing to see one of his recommendations or to reconsider a performance. Rather than those writers whose hectoring tone puts me right off even seeing the movie.
Jono--TV is where it's at CONSISTENTLY for unbelievable female performances. Actresses are getting great, juicy roles, and giving it their all. Both domestically (US) and internationally. Even for big movie actresses. I think what Glenn Close did in Damages is superior to what she does in The Wife.
Awards Daily on A Star is Born:
October 8: Why I’m Not Calling A Star is Born the Frontrunner Just Yet
October 9: A Star is Born’s Status as Oscar Frontrunner is Becoming Too Big to Ignore
October 15: A Star is Born Becomes Titanic, Too Big to Fail and Official Oscar Frontrunner for Best Picture
Errrr...
@Pam—Totally agree. If you didn't watch Damages, it's been 20 or 30 years since you've seen Glenn doing her ferocious livid volcanic thing onscreen. In that case, I can totally see why the final act of The Wife would be so thrilling and momentous.
But if you watched Damages, it's easy to name a dozen scenes or episodes where Glenn met or exceeded that bar. And she did it in a much more interesting, fully realized character—with a better script and production around her.
I'm pulling for Glenn because she needs an Oscar. But I'd take Patty Hewes over whatshername any day.
Hayden - Agreed!
