This Past Week's Must Read (If You Missed It)
Meant to share this a whole week ago but if you haven't yet read Stephen Rodrick's totally absorbing, fascinating, and non-spiteful but damning profile of Johnny Depp, "The Trouble With Johnny Depp" you must. I've been thinking about it all week and mourning the Johnny that once was, from the Edward Scissorhands, Cry Baby, Donnie Brasco, pre-Jack Sparrow days.

Nat, in case you haven't heard, Glenda Jackson will be in "King Lear" in Broadway playing the title role. I think it's expected to open next year, continuing her run after playing the role on West End.
I really fear for Depp.
LOL. Is Julia redoing Barbara in The Prince of Tides? Delusional therapist who has her hair done each day before seeing patients.
...first look at Julia Roberts in the Amazon series Homecoming. Apparently she still wants that Emmy.
You said it's the easiest triple crown award to earn yet it eludes her, Anjelica Huston, Mercedes Ruehl, Kevin Kline, Jennifer Hudson, and countless others.
/3rtful -- it does elude a lot of people. That doesn't change the fact that it's the easiest to win. (there are more emmys you can win every single year than any other major award (save the Grammy)
I read that piece on Depp. $2 million a month on wine. 14 houses around the world. Thousands of dollars for furniture that was once owned by the Kartrashians. No wonder he's nearly broke.
I'm just going to say it. He never should've left Vanessa Paradis. She kept him in check. She grounded him with the real world but no... he had to become an idiot and now someone we don't want to see in the movies anymore because he's never going to play a real character. Instead, he's like Tom Cruise. All they do now is make derp-de-derp films.
it eludes Roberts b/c IMO she really does not have the required talent to win this.
At least Julia Roberts is still trying and challenging herself. After giving great performances in Closer and August Osage County and probably almost winning for Normal Heart, she wants to keep finding good material. Bonus points to her for realizing the Tony was probably out of her league.
That list of gay horror films uses the term loosely- "Rebeca" is not horror a movie- not list would be complete with out David DeCoteau's " The Brotherhood" (2001) about homoerotic frat boys vampires
I like Julia Roberts. Her movie stardom blossomed for me at the tender age of seven. So it matters to me she's keeping herself relevant by earnest attempts at expanding her range. And she should go back to broadway. There's a character I bet could deliver with nightly.
YES IKO UWAIS! INDONESIAN REPRESENTS!
It's so heartwarming to see his stardom rise in Hollywood!
Dressed to Kill (1980) should have made the list.
Oh good lord. Julia Roberts is a terrible actress.
I'm not sure if Julia Roberts will ever return to the stage after the debacle of her debut.
I've listened to the podcast Homecoming is based on, and it's a good part. Maybe Julia Roberts is actually taking the best role available to her rather than chasing another piece of hardware.
@thevoid: that’s a huge insult to Cruise. He is 1,000x better and is not the drug and alcohol addled talentless mess that Depp is nowadays
I honestly have never quite gotten the Julia Roberts thing. She's perfectly fine, but not a master thespian by any stretch of the imagination. Even in a romantic comedy like My Best Friend's Wedding you could see her straining to be funny - she just lacked a natural comedienne's ease there. Still, I appreciate that she always tries to stretch. I think her best role to date was probably Erin Brockovich, it seemed to distill her star persona best.
I've seen all but 5 of those 55 essential queer horror. I think it's a great list. The ones I haven't seen just aren't as widely available. I hadn't even heard of Killer Condom before. The quality of the films is pretty good, overall (I despise Sleepaway Camp, but it belongs on the list).
The must-see film on the list Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, which is so significant because everyone involved in the production knew how blatant all the imagery was and it still got a wide release, still helped cement Freddy as a horror icon, and didn't stop a new low-budget horror series from reaching 7 entries, a spin off series (Freddy's Nightmares), a crossover event (Freddy vs. Jason), a reboot, and one of the best behind the scenes documentaries ever made (Never Sleep Again).
Robert G I agree about " Freddy's Revenge"
I am concerned for Depp. The interview took place 7 months ago and Depp is still around and working so I hope he can turn his life around.
TheVoid99, don't know where you read $2million a month on wine. The ex-money managers said $30,000 per month in their court documents but I thought that was ambiguous as was it the same amount every month for years or $30,000 one month when there was unusually high expenditure. When Depp was quoted as saying he spent $50,000 on wine, it did not give a time period.
I am a numerate person so I notice these things but I think Depp is not numerate.
According to the link, "Unbelievable"' will be a Netflix series, not film.
That Classic Stage production of Carmen Jones, which I saw over the weekend, needs a Broadway transfer so that Anika Noni Rose can win a second Tony because she is absolutely sensational. The entire show was a real treat to experience. I like how John Doyle and company were able to condense it to 90 minutes without losing the story itself or its impact.
Killer condom is based on the Comic by Ralf König, a gay Comic Artist. He only draws male gay Comics.
A closer look at queer comics is something that would interest me greatly.
someone is saying julia roberts in my best friend's wedding is less than perfect? what kind of revisionist history is this shit? julia was flawless in that movie and deserved a nomination for best actress in it. straining to be funny? did you not get that character? that character was about not being funny. she navigates envy and desperation, cunning and pettiness and she has to negotiate with the loss of her best friend.
i think she will do well with homecoming. i hope it finds an audience. the podcast was great.
Julia Roberts, like a lot of movie stars, is charismatic with a limited range but can do really good work within that range. She is legitimately good/great in Pretty Woman, Erin Brockovich, My Best Friend's Wedding, Closer and August: Osage County, and maybe a few others I'm forgetting/haven't seen (I think her work in Steel Magnolias is fine).
God, Depp is just so pathetic now, and he used to be so great and so un-Hollywood.
