YNMS: Mary Poppins Returns

Movie trailer step in time.
Movie trailer step in time.
Movie trailer step in time.
Never need a reason, never need a rhyme
Movie trailer step in time!

It's finally here! After the jump the Mary Poppins Returns trailer and our Yes No Maybe So™ breakdown.

YES

• The power of nostagia is real. As soon as I saw the the snow globe there was a lump in my throat.
• "As I live and breathe..." that shot of Mary Poppins emerging from the clouds is perfection. As is the way Emily Blunt sort of glides into a walk from the sky when she hits the park. And isn't it wonderful to have the musical genre's great new hope Lin-Manuel Miranda, aboard this retro confection?
• "I was flying a kite and it got caught in a nanny" - HEE! I already love this movie, don't you?
• Ben Whishaw dropping his papers when he sees Mary is bliss.
• "I've come to look after the Banks children." "Us?" "Yes, you too." Haha. One thing people always forget about Mary Poppins is how bitchy she is (in an endearing way)

• A hand-drawn animated detour? YAAAS.
• ...even better genius Sandy Powell has incorporated the hand-drawn look into the costume design for that segment.

• "You've forgotten what it's like to be a child!" ANGELA LANSBURY ❤️❤️❤️❤️
• Also Angela's hat.
• That split second of seeing Dick Van Dyke dancing thrills... as do the shots that look like a recreation of "Step in Time" (but probably aren't). How lucky for this production that Dick Van Dyke is still alive and kicking at 92 years of age. He turns 93 two weeks before the movie opens.

NO

• "This Christmas" It's just punishment that we have to wait that long.
• "Nothing's gonna forever only out of place..." the ONLY musical line in the whole trailer? I get that they're saving the songs for closer to release but this uncomfortably reminds us of the resistance to acknowledging that musicals are musicals in trailer form. Which in turn reminds us that Rob Marshall directed this. And he doesn't consistently deliver quality.
• Some of the garishly colored visual effects are giving off uncomfortable Eyesore in Wonderland vibes. Hope this is just a case of out of context visual noise and not the actual viewing experience.
• On a similar note I HATE Streep's red wig. The internet seems to love it already but I can't.

MAYBE SO

• Hmmm. did we need the exact same plot again? Stuffy dad (formerly joyful son) has forgotten how to experience joy and nonsense.
• "Everythings fallen to piece since your mother..." *weeps*" As longtime Ben Whishaw fans we really want this to work for him because the movies are really underusing him but this role doesn't look like much fun.

• Emily Blunt is a wonderful actress and she seems like the best person for this job but filling these pointy Julie Andrews shoes is a tall order. We remain nervous but hopeful because we love her comic instincts and her singing voice, both of which should serve her well here.
• Honestly forgot this movie would definitely have child actors and child actors are always an iffy notion for movies since they're so often bad!

OKAY, ROLL CALL!
Bless these actors (but why doesn't Lansbury get a title card?) and we hope they all bring it, wonky accents and all!

Are you a Yes No or Maybe So... and to what degree? If you had to rank the performances in terms of which you're most excited about, how would they fall?

That trailer is everything wrong with cinema today. No wonder Julie Andrews wouldn't touch this pos.

Haters to the left. Everything in the trailer (except LMM's accent) is a HELL YES for me. Come on quirky, colorful, perfectly-cast British childhood nostalgia!

It kind of bugs me that they automatically put Rob Marshall on all musicals. His Chicago was great, but Nine was ponderously slow, and Into the Woods disappointing.

I imagine I will wait for this one to come on streaming.

Seems like taking on a lot to do a "Returns".

Hope Meryl has a funny cameo style role.
