Popular No More

Let the joyous news at last be spread the wicked old wi popular achievement Oscar is dead!

As if the first full four-movie day of TIFF wasn't enjoyable enough (more on those films soon), after the screenings I finally heard the excessively wonderful news that you have surely already been celebrating at home all day: the Academy will not be proceeding with that "popular achievement Oscar" plan this year. This is not to say that the idea is totally dead... we know the board of governors liked it enough to announce it in the first place so it's probably lingering there like a malignant tumor BUT they're not proceeding this year. Perhaps they'll have more time to talk themselves out of it, now? If you missed our three discussions about all the things that were gross and problematic and delusional you can always click back to read and hear them.

For now let's breath a huge sigh of relief, and pray that there's an even bigger miracle and they quit with that stupid plan to shove the craft categories into commercial breaks.

WHAT OTHER GOOD NEWS HAVE YOU HEARD RECENTLY? LET'S LIFT EACH OTHER UP!

Good riddance. That said, I was perversely curious about what rules they were going to go with. That would have been fun to argue over.

Nathaniel: Will you get the chance to see FAHRENHEIT 11/9 at TIFF?

September 6, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Nat, your film-bitchiness is refreshingly vicious, gur. I'm hoping they decide to just kill this category, because I don't wanna live in a world where someone like Michael Fucking Bay could be an Oscar winner. I'm not about that life at all. In film-related good news, Tom Holland and Chris Evans (the two best performances across the MCU) have been announced to star in a movie together!

Good news for me - Emma Watson replaces Emma Stone in Little Women.

I had no problems with this category in reality, my problem is the fact that some categories are not going to be presented live, that's my problem since it is an insult to the winners and nominees in those categories and it is once a year. Because it seems that nobody cares and instead get angry with Most Popular Picture is something I do not understand.

it’d be hilarious if Portman (not in your predictions or even in your possibilities!) sweeps in amd gets a nom over say Kidman lol. It can happen

Cicely Tyson! That is all I need.

I'm with Chris on the idea of Michael Bay having an Oscar as that is something I don't want to live with it. Can we just try and get our foot on the door for more important Oscar categories that need to be mentioned like casting, dance choreography, and stunt work?

Have you commented on the Honorary Oscars announcement? I am very happy about Cicely Tyson (whom I've loved and followed since Sounder) and also Lalo Schifrin, who happens to be a fellow Argentine!

Though they sneaked along this announcement that 6-8 categories are getting cut from the show and that's awful.

Nat, what did you see today at TIFF? I'm here for the first time this year, really enjoying it so far... :)

September 7, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterRichter Scale

Hmmm... I’d actually started to come round to the idea, but ah well.
Good News = Cicily Tyson!!! :)

Keep it in their back pocket for when a white blockbuster they love succeeds jk,

We did it Fam!

Thank goodness they took the criticism seriously and set this aside (for now).
As for good news, there seems to be an excellent crop of fall films coming out.
TIFF is on and you are in a country that is run by a sane government. Enjoy.

I don’t really have an issue with presenting some categories during commercial breaks. It sounds like they will broadcast clips of the winners receiving their Oscars and part of their speech too in the main telecast. The Baftas have done this for years (mind you the whole telecast is tape delayed there). My hope is they make the full presentation of the non-televised awards available online so people can still watch them.

I think they will slowly make this go away and try to pretend that it never happened to distance themselves from the backlash and embarrassment. As they should.

According to critics, Olivia Colman is awesome in The Favourite.

End of the F***ing World is getting a Season 2.

Jack Thorne has a commission for the third part of his National Treasure trilogy.

In other Jack Thorne news, I have tickets to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in NYC next month.

This is excellent news.

I watched Merrily We Live recently. And how refreshing it was. A silly but intelligent comedy. Imagine that.

You all should do a piece on Support the Girls. It is a great showcase for Regina Hall about the type of woman who rarely gets her own movie. It's available On Demand, so anyone (in the US at least) can see it.

My good news this week is related to Popcorn Oscar

Spielberg don't like the idea!

Mr. Blockbuster himself don't liked!!

That's all!
