Oscar's International Race Pt 5 - The Eye Candy
by Nathaniel R
Now that we've covered female directors, returning auteurs, trivia, and half of the trailers, and updated all the charts, let's do something lighter... and sexier... before we wrap up with the rest of the movie trailers.
We've selected 9 hunks for you to gawk at from the 93 films submitted. In the comments we trust that you'll let us know whose, uh, native tongue you'd most like to learn.
For educational purposes.
After the jump, beautiful men from Argentina, Norway, Pakistan, Thailand, and more...
AHMED ALI AKBAR - Pakistan, Laal Kabotaar
He's been famous in Pakistan for years in films and on TV as an actor and singer. He's currently starring in their Oscar submission, which is a crime thriller. You can follow him on Instagram if you wish.
DINO BAJR0VIC - Bosnia & Herzegovina, The Son
His father is the famous Slavic actor Izudin Bajrovic (who also appears in The Son). The younger Bajrovic originally wasn't going to go into acting but somewhere along the line he changed course and he's just finishing up University in the Performing Arts. In The Son he plays the lead role of an adopted teenager who is perpetually acting out. You can follow him on Instagram where he is often doing sporty type things.
FERNANDO BARBOSA - Bolivia, I Miss You
In this gay drama about a father visiting his recently deceased son's boyfriend in NYC, Barbosa plays the boyfriend reprising his role from the stage play this film was based on. It's only his second film as an actor but he also served on two documentaries as a cinematographer. We haven't been able to find out much more info about him but he looks very tall. Is he?
ROY CHIU - Taiwan, Dear Ex
The gorgeous 37 year old actor/pop star was nominated for Best Actor at the Golden Horse awards last season for this role in which he plays a messy free spirited theater director who can't get rid of the widow and young son of the man he was in love with before his tragic death. Charming funny film despite the undertow of grief. You can find fan pages for Chiu on Instagram but not the real thing. The gif above is Chiu getting a shout out at the Golden Horse Awards last year.
CHINO DARIN - Argentina, Heroic Losers
We drooled in his general direction last year when he starred in not one but two Oscar submissions (El Angel, A 12 Year Night). He looks even better a year later (Heroic Losers , in which he co-stars with his movie-star father, Ricardo Darin). Yes, somehow that is possible, defying all rules of science. And every once in a while his Instagram gets shamelessly thirst-trappy ... which could partially account for those 1 million followers. Well, that and the fresh movie stardom that's arrived just in time for his thirtysomething years...
MIRON ONDRÍK - Slovakia, Let There Be Light
This 39 year old has been been working steadily for 10 years now in TV and film. He's from a huge family (seven siblings). He previously co-starred in the Slovak submission Eva Nova (2016) from the same director Marko Skop. This time he has the lead role as a father who discovers his son is a bully and part of a para-military youth group (radicalized young men is a theme popping up in several films of late. An ominous sign of the times)
TOBIAS SANTLEMANN - Norway, Out Stealing Horses
The most delicious of the Kon-Tiki sailors in Norway's 2012 Oscar nominated film, is back in a Norwegian Oscar submission. This time he's playing father to the protagonist in this bifurcated drama's World War II era sequences. If he looks familiar that's because he's done a lot of film and TV work. The 39 year old Norwegian star can also be seen in the TV series The Last Kingdom and Borderliner (both streaming on Netflix), and American movies like Hercules and Point Break in addition to his work in acclaimed Norwegian films like Kon-Tiki, I Am Yours, and In Order of Disappearance. He has far too few followers on Instagram given his general awesomeness in looks and talent.
RANVEER SINGH - India, Gully Boy
The 34 year old is one of Bollywood's highest paid actors and a major celebrity (27 millions of followers on Instagram) and style icon in India. He's married to another Bollywood fashion-plate Deepika Padukone who you'll recall made her own major waves on the Cannes red carpet this past summer.
OABNITHI WIWATTANAWARANG - Thailand, Krause: Inhuman Kiss
This 25 year old Thai actor is the object of the demon's affection in Inhuman Kiss, and his smile makes her head's tendency to fly right off of her body in search for flesh totally, like, relatable. The young heartthrob already has 1.2 million followers on Instagram.
So which of these movies do you wanna see now?

Umm, hey there Chino Darin.
Chino Darín is tiny but he can have me.
peggy -- tiny in what way? how short is he?
Slim, not very tall. Big head.
Movie stars usually have big heads.
My heart's with Akbar (dreamy), Darin (just beautiful), and Wiwattanawarang (pure cuteness), but this is a crazy gorgeous batch. Following them all on Instagram now!
Peggy, keep going! I was ready to touch myself.
Just saw El Angel this weekend. There’s a scene where shirtless Chino Darin passes out, and his fellow thief takes off Chino’s pants and then covers his crotch up with all their stolen pearl necklaces and jewelry. Just an FYI..
Lemme join in and echo what’s already been said: HELLO CHINO DARIN!! Yum.
Oh and Ahmed Ali Akbar - hello to him too!
Bolivia, 100%. Pain & Glory is an amazing film so I would add Antonio Banderas.
Ranveer Singh is gorgeous and incredibly talented (also very egotistical).
Also, where's Leonardo Sbaraglia (From Pain and Glory)?
You know what Roy Chiu -or any other Asian actor- should do to be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar? Simple. Produce and star in a biopic of the Japanese actor Sessue Hayakawa in the silent movies of the 1910s. He became a super star and near-sex symbol for women in the US... women of all races. In many of his films -such as The Cheat- he was partnered with Caucasian women. Look him up in Wikipedia and you'll see why.
Chino Darin is very cute but Miron Ondrik is one handsome man
César Vicente, from Pain & Glory towers over everyone listed, and his scene that depicts Almodovar's youthful sexual awakening just destroys any and all competition here, although Chino Darin and Roy Chiu do make a valid attempt to give him a run for the money. How Vicente was not mentioned in the first place is a bewildering, no...SHOCKING, oversight! He is a 10 in every way, including the obvious!
Ishmael -- i stand mortified that I forgot about him when I did this list since I just saw the movie again last night and you are correct.
And the actors of Pain and Glory? I mean Antonio Banderas, Asier Etxeandia, Leonardo Sbaraglia and César Vicente. All of them much more interesting than Chino Darin (the most interesting thing about him is being a son of world cinema legend: Ricardo Darin)
Harmodio -- but i was mostly trying to draw attention to lesser known people. PAIN & GLORY and PARASITE are getting all the attention this year.
and the winner is...
