Costume Designers Guild Nominations

by Murtada Elfadl

The costume guild nominations were announced today and some of the titles expected were indeed nominated. Ruth E Carter for Dolemite Is My Name, Arianne Phillis for Once Upon a Time….. In Hollywood and Julian Day in Rocketman. All in the Period Film category.

However, surprise no shows were The Irishman, Little Women, and Judy. Perhaps because it mainly has suits and no showy gowns and dresses, The Irishman was omitted. But then how do we explain them passing on Judy? After getting only 2 Golden Globe nominations does this spell doom for Little Women’s awards chances? Or has it started screening too late for this year’s earlier deadlines?

For Contemporary Film those gorgeous suits and wool sweaters from Knives Out were recognized. Mitchell Travers was nominated for his singular beautiful and timely choices in Hustlers. Queen and Slim, a film full of style was also recognized.

As previously announced, honorary awards will go to Mary Ellen Fields (Distinguished Service Award), Michael Kaplan (Career Achievement Award), Adam McKay (Distinguished Collaborator Award) and Charlize Theron (Spotlight Award).

I’m surprised to see “A Beautiful Day in the neighbourhood” in Contemporary. The film is set in a previous Century. 1998 to be precise but that’s still 20 years ago, ain’t this Period film?

Well, Hustlers is set in the mid-'00s (and The Laundromat not long after), so I think the definition of "period" is subjective, albeit likely generational. Like, the early/mid-'90s seems to be increasingly positioned as "period," so who knows.

I suspect LITTLE WOMEN's commercial performance (likely to be huge) will greatly help its awards hopes.

Solid list. Good work, CDG. Although no POSE in period tv is... dumb. Really dumb.

The only place God Control will be nominated?

I love this Guild. They have such enthusiasm and appreciation for expertise in their field.

In re-organizing my closet last week, I found a sweater like Chris Evans’, from “Knives Out”, that I had forgotten I had. I didn’t wear it because I thought it wasn’t in fashion. Now I wear it with great satisfaction.

It's a shame that On Becoming A God in Central Florida is getting more widely recognized because the costumers, for one, are choice and delicious.

Solid list overall.
I'm particularly surprise. The CDG and ADG snubedd The Two Popes.
Also Dumbo and Bombshell would be good choices, though a little predictable.
Happy for Rocketman, Knives Out and Hustlers...

Also sad that no one is talking how amazing the Midsommar costumes are...

Little Women feels a lot like Atonement in 07. Kept missing guilds but then came roaring back as the second most nominated film come Oscars. The box office will help since ballots will be in hand as it’s out.
