Carey Mulligan Hunts Bad Men

by Murtada Elfadl

When I recently listed five films premiering at January’s Sundance I’m most anticipating, Promising Young Woman didn’t make the cut. But then they went and released a most thrilling trailer. In lieu of YES NO MAYBE SO, since I’m 120% yes I will list 5 reasons to get excited about this movie...

  • Carey Mulligan duh! Always magnetic on screen. Sometimes underappreciated; where are her awards for Wildlife (2018)? Despite turning amazing work since her breakout in An Education (2009) she has yet to find that role that clicks again with audiences. Maybe this is the one.

  • The premise has the making a crowd pleaser. Mulligan plays a talented med-school student driven out of her program after a bad incident who then seeks revenge on her assailant while hunting seemingly nice men who have no qualms about taking advantage of vulnerable women.

  • The writer and director Emerald Fennell was the showrunner on the second season of Killing Eve. She’s also played young Camilla Parker Bowles on the third season of The Crown. Talk about a multi hyphenate.

  • The “nice men” are played by a who’s who of actors whose faces might be recognizable yet whose names are sometimes elusive. Bo Burnham (Eighth Grade), Adam Brody (The O.C.), Chris Lowell (GLOW) and Sam Richardson (Veep).

  • We don’t have to wait very long. Promising Young Woman premiers at Sundance and will come soon after on April 17th.

Check out the trailer:

Loooove the slightly ominous/sinister instrumental version of Britney Spears “Toxic” playing as the trailer music. Super effective!

Don’t know. Does not appeal to me. One too many cliches.

YES!

This looks amazing. I can't wait for it to have a disappointing opening weekend of, like, $4.5mil

YES to all of this.

Hell, yes! Anybody else think that the black and red ink she uses to tally her marks signifies a catch-and-release vs. kill count? Super intrigued already.

I may be the first No. Looks like a mean film. Not sure i need all that angst in my life. I love Carey Mulligan and especially Molly Shannon. I won't see it on streaming services until next summer or fall. Maybe I'll watch the first 20 minutes and see if I'm up to it. I have depression sometimes and this movie looks too full of blood.

Bring it on! This looks wonderfully multi-layered.

This is basically just a grown up Hard Candy

December 14, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

@PeggySue

What? Have you seen Hard Candy? Besides the revenge element this is completely different.

Definitely a yes,

Will watch. The actress talent is great (Mulligan, Britton, Brie, Shannon) and I like to think that the actors know they are expertly playing on their nice-guy personas for a specific purpose.

Automatic YES for Carey! Slight apprehension hoping that this doesn't get torture-porny like Hard Candy.
