Hello, Gorgeous: Best Actress of 2020

Women are at the center of the Oscars conversation*. Two female nominees for Best Director. Chloé Zhao making Oscar history. Highest number of female-directed films nominated at the Oscars as well as highest number of eligible films at the Oscars in total. Maybe it’s too early to say, but this year is looking like the bellwether of a significant change that is about to happen in the cinematic experience and landscape in the years to come. In a time when cinema as we know it was changing right in front of our collective eyes, this year in film has shown that the future is female indeed.

As for Best Actress - save for one co-lead situation - women are also the center of their respective films’ narratives (longtime Oscar fans know that’s not always the case). The roles nominated during this time exemplify the complex emotions of the year. Social unrest and grief are big forces that confronted us that year. And look at what we have: their nominees’ character introductions are reflective of that.

Through Her Lens: An Introduction

Will any female directors be nominated this year at the Oscars? It's too early to say but sexism has been a long-standing problem in the history of cinema and the Oscars -- that's often reflected in who is invited to enter the canon and who is not. Year after year, films directed by women have been routinely ignored. Seeing five men in Best Director lineups during awards season has long been a given. Only seven women have been nominated for Best Director. Ever. Last season, though, featured what we hope will prove a turning point.

In this series, we will share an alternate list of five films directed by women per Oscar vintage, based on what was eligible. This is not to say that the films we'll cite will always be better than the ones nominated. Take this list more as a reminder that the work by women has always existed. That should be reason enough for celebration. This is Through Her Lens...

"Nomadland" and "Sound of Metal" dominate the Spirit Awards

Last stop before the Oscars! The Spirit Awards were held last night and the big winner was Nomadland which fits the Spirits like a glove. Congratulations to Chloe Zhao and her team. Less expected but wonderful news is that Sound of Metal collected three prizes: First Feature, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor, finally also getting its due. This 'spread the wealth' awards season was surely accidental but it's been beautiful as art is subjective and there's no reason to pretend that only say, four people and one movie are worthy of any prizes each year. In this one way, this season has been the best. In the other ways, zoom ceremonies... never seeing anyone holding their trophies or mingling in rooms together or on the red carpet has been quite glum. But we're in the last weekend now. Hoorah.

Borat and Wanda Maximoff lead the MTV Movie & TV Award Noms

The hits just keep on coming. This very strange and elongated awards season just keeps adding chapters and sidebars that aren't usually there because it's lasted so long. Hell, if Broadway had reopened by this point we'd also have Tony campaigning happening during Oscar campaigning (Speaking of which, why did they announce Tony Award nominations five whole months ago if they weren't going to name winners or schedule a date to do so? Strange.). Anyway, here's something diametically opposed to the Tony Awards and sometimes the Oscars: the MTV Movie and TV Award Nominations.  As usual though this is a fan vote awards show so it's literally the popularity contest that all awards shows sort of are, only more nakedly so! Borat Subsequent Moviefilm an Judas and the Black Messiah lead the movies in nominations while WandaVision, Emily In Paris, and RuPaul’s Drag Race lead in the television shows but at the MTV Awards, moveis and TVs share several categories like "Best Hero", "Best Fight" and "Best Kiss" and the like. 

The complete list is after the jump (NOW UPDATED WITH WINNERS AS OF 05/17). That Carey Mulligan and Maria Bakalova's are both nominated is fun but doesn't instill confidence that they'll be able to pull off upsets at the Oscars...

93rd Academy Awards: Best Picture

The weirdest aspect of this year’s Best Picture race may be its lack of weirdness.  For an Oscars season that the COVID-19 pandemic first threatened to derail and then expanded, in which the vast majority of voters saw none of the contenders in theaters and almost no traditional Oscar campaigning, the path to the Academy’s biggest prize has been, on the whole, remarkably smooth.  With few real curveballs either in the nominations or in the precursor awards, some might even call it a little dull (especially when compared to how bonkers some of the other categories have been).  On the bright side, the final lineup of BP nominees is pretty solid, even if I’d rate First Cow above them all and would happily swap out The Trial of the Chicago 7 for at least a half dozen other films.  Here’s my take on each of the nominated movies, in ascending order of personal preference.
